70k is too small for Sydney’s & Australias biggest rectangular ground. Dogs & Souths looks like it might hit 70k this week. Finals, Origin, GF deserve a bigger capacity. Homebush needs a full knock down. 80k-100k rectangular ground.
Homebush in terms of Regualr season matches should only be used for big Sydney derby’s.
Let’s play the hypothetical game and say they do the full knock down, this is how the games should go -
Round 1. South’s/Roosters
Round 2. Dogs/Tigers
Good Friday. South’s/Dogs
Easter Monday. Eels/Tigers
Anzac Day. Roosters/Dragons
Kings Bday. Dragons/Eels
Gadhu Round
Friday Roosters/Tigers
Saturday South’s/Dragons
Sunday Dogs/Eels
Each team takes 1-2 home games a year, rotate like the Anzac game.
Plus Origin, Big Finals Games, GF

no other matches should be played there.
Dogs move to Commbank, Belmore, or build their own ground.
South’s at Allianz.
Tigers to Commbank, CT.

What a missed opportunity that was thanks to the afl.

I hate the AFL as much as anyone or as however many others do, but it was our weak NSW politicians that caved in to their demands and the AFL'S paltry contribution $ wise that destroyed the rectangular re-configuration of the Olympic stadium post the Olympics.
Stupid, short-sighted politicians that have now cost us taxpayers far more $$$ to sort this shit fight out in the future.

A 90k stadium will cost $5B. Construction costs increase as the capacity increases - the extra 20k capacity on top of say, 70k costs more than going from 50k to 70k. To play 20 NRL games there plus concerts and one of two other events per year is simply not feasible. It must have a 30k and a 60k mode and you don’t proceed until after clubs have signed contract to play a minimum number of games there. The only similar sized stadium in the country (MCG) has a minimum of 45 regular season AFL games, plus all Victorian finals (average of five or six), so around 50 games plus 12 days of cricket. Content is king,

Red is knock down ,Green was the rebuild, incluing the roof
2019-plan.jpg

yeh, i think there is so much that could be done with what is there…

once you get into the cheaps seats at the top, you assume the view will be shit anyway. But across all games/events, 99% of people would sit in the lower bowl.

a fully rebuilt north + south plus a redeveloped east and west would have done it

Those NRL games would be marquee games and fill over half the ground every time. As opposed to Thursday night games getting under 10k which we currently get. What would the Gov like more, 20 odd events that around 75% - 100% full, or 15+ matches played on an oval that have 15k or less, with a handful of games that get a decent crowd.

80-85k is good enough. Its current capacity of 83.5k is higher than all current NFL stadiums and all Football stadiums in Europe except Camp Nou & Wembley.

As for content, the NRL could guarantee a minimum amount of regular season games, 15-20 somewhere, Bulldogs home games plus a handful of other games to make up the numbers. Easter Monday, Good Friday & Kings Birthday regardless of who hosts. 20-25 if the Rabbitohs stay put.

15-20 NRL regular season games.
Origin.
NRL Finals.
Grand Final.
1+ Matildas game.
1+ Socceroos game.
1+ Wallabies game.
~10 Concerts.

Could pretty much lock that in each year then you have all the other events that Accor currently hosts and will continue to bid for & host.

.....

Currently, that may be correct. In the future though?

I mention this as based on the way Governments have worked in the past, if you only worry about the immediate, present demand, and don't plan for the future, they sure as heck won't. In fact if there is any land surrounding the venue set aside for future expansion, some Government will probably flog it off to a property developer for housing (be it units/apartments or what not). This would then inhibit future capacity expansion.

The NSW Government in particular has been notorious for doing this. For example, tracts of land set aside for future rail corridors were sold off by the Wran Government during the late 1970s. That's one of the reasons why there hasn't been much expansion of heavy rail in the Sydney area since the Bondi Junction line opened.

You are right. Content is king. When you look at last year, eleven concerts were held. Taylor Swift (4), Pink(1), The Weeknd (2), Coldplay (4). In brackets is the number of concerts by each artists. Attendances are massive- sold out.

This year already Luke Combs (2) and Mayday (1). Late this year after the footy season, Oasis, Lady Gaga and Metalica.

Accor primarily is a concert venue in the summer. Yes this site is about Rugby League where the sport only sells out the venue twice a year. There's more to Accor stadium than just NRL.

There are 4 main things that will seal the future of ACCOR Stadium

- Redevelopment into 75,000-90,000 Rectangular venue
For obvious reasons, but will then solidify the venue as the national venue for NRL, Rugby Union and Soccer Internationals
- Intimate Mode -Reduced Capacity to around 35,000-40,000 to attract additional NRL games
- Retractable Roof -While not critical for the Football codes (although there will no excuses for Sydney rain),it will consolidate the venue for concerts
- Metro West -Under construction and to be opened in 2032
5 minutes from Parramatta and 15 minutes from Sydney CBD

Chances of souths staying there are low to nil

It’s done its job helping the club when they were weak financially but it’s hard to see Souths getting the crowds they used to get there

Dogs maybe would stay if their current crowd growth is maintained but the reality is it’s a poor ground for 99 percent of nrl club games

Unfortunately don't think there is any alternatives to Accor for the Bulldogs. If we can become a top 4 team and stay there for the next five years, the average crowd should be over 30k.

I wonder if/when Accor is finally replaced if there is another location in the precinct where they can build the new stadium and keep the old stadium going during construction.

NSW should sell Victoria to Tasmania to pay for it.

Why all the fuss in Brisbane

The only venue they got 50k for a stand alone RL club game was at QEII

No that's a lie. 50,049 for Broncos v Dolphins at Suncorp August last year.

And I have no doubt that had Suncorp been able to house at least 60k, we'd have many 50k plus standalone club crowds.

That would give the general public more chance to buy tickets, instead of stadium members which leave huge gaps in the stands on most occassions.

Btw I like how Albo rightly says that Accor is merely a ‘good’ stadium, and not built for rectangular sports.

Is that going to be a tenable position for the nsw government and city of Sydney where the main stadium, supposed national stadium, is merely ‘good’ and is not even built to support the sports that are the main tenants? This is the view of the prime minister.
