It only has to be good enough for cricket. There are many empty seats there today for the Swans v GWS.
It makes sense that Melbourne, SA, WA have bigger/better ovals than Sydney and Brisbane and actually if you include stadium australia sydney has the second-best oval stadium in the country.

Come 2032 SCG will actually be the seventh best oval stadium as the article forgot Marvel. ACCOR is not an oval stadium and is well behind MCG, Marvel, Adelaide and Perth anyway. SCG certainly needs an upgrade but not an expansion. The AFL will regret 60k stadiums when the Swans or Lions are not winning and only drawing 25k.

Accor has hosted swans games and top level cricket matches

Can’t remember if it was bbl or test matches / one dayers so it certainly counts as an oval in that regard

What amenity does the SCG lack compared to the MCG or Adelaide oval?
MCG has 36 bars, most with view of the field, some also with view over Yarra Park, 14 dining rooms, no queue food and drink outlets, food courts, four parent rooms, kids playroom, sensory room, excellent disability access and seating, escalators and lifts to upper levels, cushioned seats on middle levels, vast majority of seats undercover.

AAMI is similar other than food and drink outlets not as well laid out.

I would imagine any stadium built in the last 20 - 25 years would have most of those facilities but half of the SCG is more than 40 years old. The current capacity is fine but people expect and deserve more these days.

Will never be used as an oval again.

Give me your thoughts on whether or not HBF Park in Perth is suitable as a modern stadium and Perth's largest rectangular venue.

It’s got the exact configuration today it had when the swans and cricket played there

The shape hasn’t changed even if the events have lol

It was so worth the afl giving a paltry few million to destroy Accor as a proper rectangular venue for multiple generations.
The government should the the afl to that - if it’s good enough for the nrl why can’t it be used for afl as well? Since they were the ones that campaigned to have to be configurable to an oval mode and wrecking it for the recentangle sports.

Its such a joke that the afl destroyed what should have been the premier rectangle venue in the country just so they can use it, but now they don’t want to use it

The Shane Warne stand (half the MCG) doesn't have any of that.

The SCG is fine how it is.
Its hosts a few games of AFL and Cricket.
ACCOR is our premier venue that attracts the main events to Sydney.
That should take priority and once that it done, the SCG can put up its hand.

It's a sht stadium in a sht location. Why would they choose to keep using it?

Because they paid money and lobbied the government to ensure it does not get changed to a proper rectangular stadium, that they intend to play games there and need a large oval stadium in Sydney.

If it's a shit stadium and shit location why did they lobby the government to make it oval? Hmm maybe they never had any real intention to be based there to begin with.

or maybe they hoped it'd be better than it was and that SCG suited the location of their fanbase better? Was a waste of money by them.

It was a small waste of money for afl (offset by them getting some large crowds there so they probably recouped their money) and a huge set back for the NRL experience for the next 3 decades.

Another way to look at it: AFL had 2 goals in mind, experiment using the large capacity Accor for high drawing games and f**k up the NRL by nerfing their main stadium.

They played there around four years I think including a final and crowds kept falling (think it was one game a year)

Cricket was there a similar time

The giants could’ve used it for their games but we know why that didn’t happen

SCG is close to their fan base and perfect for their crowds
