Help them get a stadium': What was said to Albo in a Raiders corporate suite

NRL powerbrokers have thrown their weight into the good fight for Canberra, seizing a moment with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to deliver a cheeky reminder about the city's stadium plight.

In a quiet corner of a corporate suite at Canberra Stadium, NRL boss Andrew Abdo and Albanese joked about the Raiders-Rabbitohs clash and the Green Machine's superb comeback.

Abdo was at the game to pay tribute to Josh Papali'i after he became the most-capped Raider of all time while Albanese - a long-time Rabbitohs fan - was attending as a guest of South Sydney's board members.

And while most of the conversation centred around what was happening off the field, the focus soon turned to the fans who were shivering through the coldest game of the year so far.

Those within earshot told us Abdo said words to the effect of "you should help them get a new stadium" as the apparent temperature stayed below zero degrees.

Everyone chuckled, and while the comment was made in a joking nature, there was an element of seriousness as the capital's 16-year stadium saga continues to drag on.

At worst, it was a perfect reminder for Albanese, who has been one of the only recent prime ministers to invest in major Canberra infrastructure.

The problem is Albanese's hands are tied until ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr knocks on his door with a ready-to-build business case with a location, a timeline and a cost.

At the moment the ACT government is in the midst of another stadium study - this time an examination of a 25-hectare plot of land to determine the best spot for a $1.9 billion stadium.

That report is due in the coming months, but there is growing concerns the project will get pushed beyond its current deadline of 2033.

Albanese committed $250 million to the AIS refurbishment last year and added another $10 million to help the ACT government deliver a detailed business case on a health, education and sports hub at Bruce.

That is slated to include a new stadium, but Albanese can't pledge money or tick off on land allocation until Barr's team is ready.

It's frustrating seeing Hobart get a 1 billion dollar roofed stadium for 6 AFL games a year meanwhile Canberra with double the population have to sit in the freezing cold. They deserve better.

$1.9b sounds like a figure someone who doesn’t really want to build it has come up with.

On that note, wishful thinking but the longer the stadium drags out at Canberra the more I think they should look at a higher capacity to future-proof it when it does eventually happen. Everything seems to reference ~30k, I’d consider something in the 35-40k range, preferably with a club mode to close off sections if possible.

They do, but until ACT govt and NRL work together to present a case to the Feds then it wont happen. Tassie got the federal funding as it was a presented by the AFL and Tassie govt as a project worth investing in with clear plan and commitments from the players involved.
Until the players get off their backsides and commit to the Canberra stadium model then it will continue to go nowhere. Sad reality for the raiders fans is that either the NRL or ACT Govt seem to have much motivation to make something happen.

Posting this on their social media surely means a deal is pretty much done.
Solly has been a twat about this he should be thanking the nsw govt for letting them out of the contract which he negotiated rather than putting pressure on the govt in the media

Albanese got them out of that bad deal he signed

Souths should be cracking 25k next year at Allianz.

This is a good move. Souths back playing closer to home. One less tenant at an unfit Homebush, which will put more pressure on that to be renovated.

When, because it is when, Homebush is finally redeveloped, where would the Grand Final be played?

Souths won’t come back even if they rebuild accor out of gold

But with the growth in dogs crowds they might ignore livwepool and stay there

Neither should Souths go back to Homebush, Wests however...

Any money planned to be wasted on Leichhardt and whatever Liverpool nonsense which was dreamt up for the Doggies and potentially the Tigers, should be saved for a redeveloped Homebush with a roof!

Yeah I’ve recently changed my opinion on Accor upgrades vs new Liverpool stadium. We can’t be spreading ourselves too thin in terms of allocated budgets and number of stadiums needing attention. Let’s just focus on getting Wests and dogs to agree to using an upgraded/rebuilt Accor and focus on getting that done. there’s so many nsw stadiums to upkeep let’s not add another one to the mix.

but I don’t want to stick a roof on Accor and call it done. We desperately need a rebuild, a world class 80k rectangular stadium that will attract all sorts of events.

Accor is definitely aged its facilities, seats etc are not up to scratch. Let alone the shape and rake has been wrong from the get go. It’s good for the next couple years then we should be aiming for a new stadium by 2030 which I believe will happen because Sydney will have a stadium that is far behind the best in the country at that point with the new Brisbane Olympic stadium, Perth, mcg being massive.

The Tasmanian Stadium was as agreement between the Premier and the AFL without any process involving the State Government as such as the Cabinet was not consulted before the deal was agreed to. The Premier then lied to the minor parties and said the team did not require a stadium. He then lied to the public about the costs of the stadium. Albo then innocently rolled up and committed federal funding only to find he was heckled and booed because we don’t want it. He thought it was a popular decision. He was genuinely surprised to find out we think it’s a load of crap. The State government collapsed so the premier called an election for a mandate to support the stadium. He won 14 of 35 seats, formed a minority government and has just had a motion of no confidence go through parliament. Every survey taken about the stadium demonstrates tasmanians don’t want it. If you want to write about the afl stadium in Tasmania I’d suggest you try using some facts and not utter bullshit.
