They should’ve waited till after the prelims

Those are the big games Sydney fc could rearranged their season their crowds are average anyway

Wonder if it costs the roosters what could’ve been effectively a home semi if they were scheduled there in week two or three

Guess both prelims will be at Accor
The prelims will be in Canberra and Melbourne. Dogs the only Sydney team with a chance to host a prelim and there is no way Rooster will finish top 4, so won’t be hosting any finals after week 1.

It makes more sense to upgrade Newcastle than throw money at Liverpool or Campbelltown.

Agreed, build 2 tier stands at both ends, should take it to 40k. It seems they’ve lost 3-4K capacity on the hills like other stadiums, a sellout these days tends to be 29-30k, not the listed 33k.

Or Auckland, or Melbourne, or Canberra or Brisbane. Might have zero prelims in Sydney

Someone else pointed this out, but why would you wait till then? Considering the ladder as it stands, its unlikely any team in the top 4 will be ones in Sydney who don't play out of Accor. Hence it makes little sense to delay it on a remote possibility.

They have other people using Allianz besides Sydney FC, the Roosters and the Waratahs. I suspect they tried to time it for least disruption to the stadium's operations.

Potentially missing out on up to two of its bigger events of the year

Probably compensation would’ve sweetened it up for the tenants

Ahh the failed World Cup bid, I’d like to think we’d come up with a better lineup if we to seriously bid again.

Newcastle at 40k+ would have been the highlight for NRL.

Canberra was going to be a new 40k stadium next to the current one, then downsized from memory.

The rest was all pretty underwhelming for Rugby League, AFL would have benefited more.

Accor, Suncorp & the old SFS were only getting minor touch ups.

Townsville was in line for a new stadium that was too big and still out in the sticks. QCB far better result.

Gold Coast they were going to upgrade Carrara, the f**king Oval, to 40k+. Robina nothing.

A new stadium in Blacktown, meh, sure a club or 2 would have used it but it would have meant no Commbank.

The rest were all ovals including the Geelong, Adelaide & Perth upgrades that pretty much happened anyway.

I think if we were to bid now for a World Cup the stadiums would be:

Accor rebuild - new 80k rectangular
Allianz - existing stadium
Newcastle - upgraded to 40k
Suncorp - upgraded to 65k
Brisbane Olympic oval - existing
Ipswich - new 40k rectangular
Optus oval - existing stadium
Perth - new 40k rectangular
AAMI - upgraded to 40k
MCG - existing stadium
Hindmarsh - upgraded to 40k

I would be surprised if they build Ipswich for a world cup if Brisbane already had 2 stadiums. Canberra potentially gets a new stadium. FIFA requires a host to have 14 stadiums with minimum capacity of 40k for group stages, 60k for semis and 80k for opening game and final. Might look to joint host with NZ and this would also need them to build/ upgrade their stadiums.

Yep you’re right probably wishful thinking for an Ipswich stadium to coincide with an Ipswich nrl team. Woild make sense to swap that for a 40k Canberra stadium that can be downgraded to 30k post games.

then add Nz to make it 14 stadiums:
Eden Park upgraded 60k
Te Kahu - existing stadium
New Wellington 40k stadium

Doesn’t fifa only allow rectangle stadiums for WC?
I think they definitely prefer it and may even mandate it (which is why afl lobby against getting the World Cup). However I could see an exception made for the MCG, Optus and Brisbane Ovals particularly if they can spend a bit of money to reconfigure them a bit by filling in seats in the sides.
