The current situation is the best for the nrl

Collect the money the nsw govt pays to host the gf each year plus still sell out accor at 83k

It derives zero financial benefit by having a makeover at accor or even a roof

They should only do a deal if 800 million is spent on Brookie, Newcastle, gong, Campbelltown etc

Alternatively talk to the qld govt that they get the grand final long term if they build a new 80k Suncorp

Nsw govt has already spent close to 2 billion on new stadiums and centres of excellence and stupidly not made the nrl sign away the gf already

If the govt want to prioritise the afl stadium then stuff the goodwill the nrl should do what’s best for it

This morning on 9 Will Hodgman, former Tasmanian premier, who now works in major projects for the Gold Coast, was discussing a 600 million dollar project, I think it was a stadium, on the Gold Coast. Did anybody catch that? I only heard the close. Given his background this worries me.

Listening to that:
- Accor isn’t getting a roof anytime soon
- SCG is next in terms of redevelopment
- NRL need to sign a long term deal to play the GF at Homebush before anything happens there
I wouldn't be against the NRL signing a long term extension for the NRL GF with the NSW government if the government rebuilt Accor as a proper rectangular stadium. If its just a roof on the current stadium then no.

why would qld gov spend another $2b on another stadium when the current one doesnt need major work? and whats long term to recoup the profit to pay the stadium off by having that 1 extra game a year? doesnt make any sense cob

I just hope that once the tv rights deal is out of the way, the NRL can concentrate on stadiums. They need to lobby with other sports for new or upgraded stadiums for men AND women. Also lobby with concert promoters too.

Priority should be canberra, perth and Auckland lobbying. Sydney has two stunning stadiums nrl clubs should be using.

I don't know how you gathered that the SCG is next. Gallop has no say in what the state government fund.

In regards to the GF, why do you think Vlandys is going year to year with the GF? Sure, NRL need to sign on long-term, but the NSW Govt need to commit to the stadium spend and not back out.

Barr isn’t even paying lip service any more, let’s see if the Raiders, NRL, FFA and RA do anything about it. The 3 rectangular codes don’t have the best track record lately so wont hold my breath.

Yehp, it’s one area where AFL still embarrass us honestly. They’ve pretty much got every stadium they need but they’re still manoeuvring to make them better step by step. Meanwhile the NRL still needs upgrades or new stadiums in:

Brisbane, Canberra, Auckland, Perth, Port Moresby, Newcastle, Wollongong, Manly, Campbelltown & Homebush.

The silence on most of those is deafening.

Problem with Canberra is super rugby crowds are under 10k and until recently raiders haven’t been that great

Nrl has had a lot of money thrown at stadiums to date. Sydney has two world class rugby league facilities that are perfect for club games

Suncorp doesn’t need an upgrade right now

Perth I’m sure will get the 27.5k promised down the track

The only ground that really needs upgrades urgently is Brookie it’s selling out regularly

Nrl should be working with albanese to sort out a new stadium in Canberra even if it totally bypasses the state govt. Even if the Feds come up with a good chunk of the funding and leave the rest to local authorities like Townsville did

The nrl has ignored the Canberra stadium issue going back before Greenberg

.....

As Chair of Venues NSW, which runs the major stadiums owned by the NSW Government, I dare say he and his board would have some input to the decision making process for stadium funding for maintenance and upgrades.

Have you ever seen Gallop when he has to make a call or be decisive? Umm ahh, there's room for all codes.... Guy is deferring to the Premier for sure, he wouldn't want the heat from making a call and is a professional yes man

Tbf it was Greenberg who said there’s room In Sydney for both sports

He loved his weekly chat with gill

Gallop was the one who said afl deserves a tv deal around double the nrl bc they had more teams in capital cities

And people wonder why rugby league went nowhere for 25 years with muppets like that in charge

I know it won't ever happen, but the Raiders should get together with the NRL and plan a serious threat of leaving. Base themselves out of Christchurch at the Te Kaha Stadium. The Christchurch Raiders has a ring to it.

I have no skin in the game, but living in Canberra the folk deserve a cracking stadium. One thing I've noticed about Canberra from being here for 5 years, is that the population is well cashed up, and wants to do things. Even Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursday nights in the middle of winter, and central restaurants and bars are all packed. A stadium in Civic and they are drawing like Newcastle and the Cowboys every home game.
If this was an American sports league, and the Raiders were faced with these stadium issues, that's pretty much what we'd be seeing.

The scenario where the relocated team gets a new identity relevant to their new home & the IP and even the records of the old brand stays with their original city, for an expansion team there to reclaim that identity is pretty interesting too.

If I had to prioritise stadium upgrades in order I’d go:

2026
1. Canberra
2. Brookvale
3. Gong
4. Campbelltown - could just skip this and play games at Accor and Leichardt
5. Whatever sharks are doing
6. Newcastle
7. Accor
8. Perth
9. Lang
2035
