Yeah you're right, I just watched it again, no deflection. Just an awful shank by Austin.

Have you ever run towards a ball in the air that you might not catch on the full? Often you have to slow down a bit to let it bounce rather than half-volleying yourself.

Not saying this is definitely what happened but pretty plausible IMO.

Not only is he jogging - he's jogging AWAY from where the ball is headed. If he went straight for it in a sprint, he would've got there on the full. Instead, he goes sideways...WTF

 Honestly did he forget the rule about catching the ball on the full.

Even if winger is his true position, surely natural instinct says to get back there and field the ball.

He's a lazy, pea hearted player.

Edit: it actually reminded me of a lot of Boyd's "efforts" while he was here

Ross covers about 30m to get to the ball as quickly as possible, whereas Gagai struggles to make it 10m. Says it all.

No one short of GOD himself could of known where that ball was going. Our only SOO rep and he gets bagged at every turn. Seriously some people on here are either trolls or just weird.

In any other team this guys career would be flourishing and for him personally he'd most likely be enjoying himself. I'm thankful Gagai is playing for us, he does the jumper proud and comes across as a polite well mannered young man. The people who like to bag him should just pull their f**king head in!! seriously WTF is wrong with you people ???????

I agree with you mate. The way the words "merkin" and "pea-heart" get thrown around on this forum after a loss is pretty ridiculous. Our players get attacked mercilessly each week unless they turn in a god-like performance. If Dane was as big a pea heart as everyone would have us believe then he would have taken the easy option and packed up and moved back to Brisbane with Wayne but he stayed at our basket case of a club presumably because he likes the place and wants to help it become successful, I suppose if he had chosen to leave we'd call him a pea-hearted merkin anyway so I don't see how he can win over this group of fans unless he turns up and wins the Dally M.

Dane's been guilty of plenty of mistakes this year and his poor positional play has cost us on a number of occasions but he's definitely not phoning it in. I would go as far as to say that he had a pretty decent game on Sunday until that last moment, and even then I doubt that anything he could have done would have prevented that try, it was a freak bounce of the ball which cost us ultimately. Could he play better week to week? Of course he could, but he's one of the very few rep quality players in this team trying to bail water from a sinking ship and I'd rather have him in the team than not have him.

He's not immune to criticism by any stretch but surely he deserves more respect than what some of the posters on this forum give him.

god like? All he had to do was get back there and catch the f**king ball. Is that asking too much?? Don't say he wouldn't have got there either, because it can clearly be seen he is showing no urgency to get to it.

OR he stayed because he likes getting paid $600,000 a season and knows no other club would be stupid enough to give that sort of money to a player with glaring deficiencies and an obvious attitude problem

Mate I'm not disagreeing that he should have made more of an effort to get there and I made it clear that I feel he's not immune to criticism, however I think that it's over the top to slam this bloke's character after we lose a game in those circumstances.

So let's say he sprints to the ball, in my view he would get close to it but still wouldn't have taken it on the full as he had a fair bit of ground to cover and he had to turn in the process. So if he's sprinting at full speed towards the ball and it bounces like that on its point he's still got no hope in hell of taking it and would be wrong footed in the process anyway.

Not arguing that the effort on that play could have been better but the idea that this one play alone cost us the game when we had already given up a 22-0 lead through dumb play is laughable. People on here just like to have a scapegoat, someone to call a pea-hearted merkin each week and inevitably whoever makes the most glaring error that week ends up being the one who gets the label.

Also just on his decision to stay at the Knights rather than go to Broncos, they seem to be able to afford just about anyone because of their TBA deals so I don't think money would have been that much of an issue for them, I'm not convinced by the argument that every player is just in it for the money, some of them are I'm sure but he genuinely seems to like living in Newcastle and appears to feel some loyalty to the club that took a punt on him when he was a cast off a few years ago. Obviously neither of us know for sure unless you know him personally (which I admit I don't) so I guess we're both just basing it on personal opinion rather than true fact.

Either way I still think the way the guy is derided around here is over the top.

Yes it was a wicked bounce but rep quality players show urgency in a situation like that and understand the ball could possibly take a bounce such as it did. Ross motored to get to where he did from where he was, so did Rapana.

We can't blame Dane for the loss but maybe he's not the player some of you think he is. Not yet and not at fullback.

I agree with the sentiments re his well mannered, humble nature. I like that about him.

But the reference to God. Pfft.

Lets not forget that it was Gagais lazy effort on Austin that lead to their first try too. Was an epic arm grab of Chris Houston proportions. Also not the only one like it from him in the game

Theres no doubting the guys talent with ball in hand but he fails to put in for the 1% ers for us. Its clear as day and deserving of critisism

I think you'll find Hodkinson not showing enough leadership to close out the game instead of useless kicks handing Canberra multiple 7 tackle sets, has been highlighted many times in other threads.

Fred may be on the extreme end of the critisism of Dane but its still warranted given the money we pay Dane and the clearly different way he goes about his footy when playing for the maroons. It may not seem fair to you but senior rep guys will always cop more

I thought both Ross and Gagai were shielding the ball over the dead ball line expecting a favourable bounce. You see Gagai move sideways that way to block any runners coming through. Then horror bounce over their heads. In hindsight perhaps they should have made a bigger effort to catch the ball. I'm not sold that they could have though.

Watching that video I see Rossdawwwwwwg jogging towards the ball with no awareness of what's happening around him - like Rapana screaming towards the ball.

But you know, he's the new forum sensation so he gets a free pass...

Seriously - it was a shit bounce. We lost it well before that. It shouldn't have got to extra time.
