Gallen Story

When is the big man getting married?

ON A footy field Paul Gallen is the NRL's Superman - now the inspirational Cronulla and NSW skipper has been sounded out to test his boxing skills in a fight for charity.
While refusing to talk himself up as the next Anthony Mundine, Gallen yesterday admitted his manager had approached him about taking part in a December 15 fight night in New Zealand to raise money for cancer.
The Fight For Life is an annual charity event that features Aussie sporting heroes against Kiwi rivals and is one of the highest rating shows of the year on New Zealand free-to-air TV.
In past years, league stars including Mal Meninga, Mark Geyer, Wendell Sailor and Issac Luke have had a crack at the event and this year Willie Mason is locked in as Australian team captain.

But Gallen was adamant yesterday there was no way he could even contemplate fighting because he was booked in for surgery tomorrow.
On top of that, he said, he had another little matter to attend to in the coming weeks - his wedding.
Gallen explained: "My manager (David Riolo) has spoken to them about it but I haven't spoken to anyone.
"I have to get these groins done (tomorrow) and I will see how I feel after that.
"I haven't said anything (about if he will or won't take part).
"I am also getting married and we are going overseas for two weeks."
Asked if he would consider the fight if he was fully fit and it worked into his calendar, Gallen laughed: "I would have to have a look who I was going to fight.
"If I've got to fight someone who is six-four and a 120kg I don't know about that.
"I was planning on having my buck's party this weekend and I don't think I will even be able to have that because I am getting this surgery."
He wouldn't say it himself, but those who have seen him in action reckon Gallen can more than handle himself and some of his off-season sparring sessions down the Sutherland Shire way are legendary.

I tore the left side of my groin then ended up tearing the right side just doing normal stuff because the body over compensates. And I was hardly an elite nrl player weighing 100kg + so I can only imagine how ruined his groins could be given he has to play through it often.

A fair few of the boys have gone under the knife this off season. Carney, Gallen, Gibbs am I missing anyone else?

Has anyone else here actually seen Gal box?
The guy is a machine.
I pity anyone who goes toe to toe with him.

I was always under the impression that Gal couldn't fight. No idea why. Sounds like he can hold his own though. Would be hard to hurt him that's for sure.

Nope but I know he trains at TP Gym when he has the time. It has guys like Bernardo Trekko, Richie Vass and Manuel Rodriguez who have all fought for the UFC. He is actually listed as a Blue belt in BJJ on their website.

I wonder why he didn't get the groins done straight after the test. Hopefully there is plenty of 'fat' in the recovery time.

He was away on Watmoughs bucks in Darwin for a few days I think you will find.

Last year I believe he came back after the break to pre season? That was with a longer rep season though so who knows?

I think I recall boxing trainer Johnny Lewis saying that Gal had the hardest punch he'd ever seen. Can anyone confirm that?

I was under the same impression. As much as I love the man, whenever a fight is on he is always absent (unless he instigated it, Mose Masoe would know). Must just be his professionalism coming through, more reason to love him.

Wonder who they will fight?

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/boxing-mma/all-blacks-and-blues/story-fndeeimb-1226502672562

FOR years we've known them as the NSW Bruise Brothers - now NRL enforcers Paul Gallen and Greg Bird will put their tough guy reputations on the line to fight for charity.
The Daily Telegraph can reveal it will be announced today in New Zealand that Gallen and Bird have agreed to fight in a December 15 cross-code showdown in Auckland that is likely to pit the two Kangaroos against current All Blacks.
This will be the first time two current Australian rugby league stars have participated in the Fight For Life charity event which has been running for more than a decade.
Which NRL stars would you most like to see in the boxing ring? Tell us below.
Demand to the see the Kangaroo teammates test their boxing skills is expected to be so high that New Zealand promoters are negotiating with Foxtel to televise the event live in Australia on pay-per-view.

Willie Mason will also feature on the blockbuster fight program with at least one other current NRL star.

Former Kiwi international Jarrod McCracken will also be fighting on the night, while Bird's Gold Coast coach John Cartwright was "as keen as mustard to have a crack" but organisers couldn't find him a Kiwi coaching opponent prepared to take him on.
Gallen could not be contacted yesterday because he was having surgery on both groins but his manager David Riolo confirmed the NSW State of Origin skipper had agreed to the fight as long as he is fully fit.
"Obviously his health and his fitness and his rugby league are his priority," Riolo said of Gallen.
"But providing his body is fine he will be there.
"Gal is very fit. He trains hard and he works hard. Gal doesn't mind getting in a bit of a scuffle and this is for a good cause.
"I've told him it is a great idea but I don't have to get in the ring. I'll be sitting ringside cheering him on.

Long regarded as two of the toughest players in the NRL, Gallen and Bird are great mates and have never backed away from an opponent on the footy field.
But as New Zealand promoter Dean Lonergan explained, backing your fighting ability in the boxing ring takes enormous courage.
"I can promise you, it is one of the scariest things you will ever do," Lonergan said.
"Mal Meninga did it a few years back and he'll tell you it's one of the most daunting things he has done but also one of the most enjoyable.
"And with Willie Mason, Paul Gallen and Greg Bird, this is by far the strongest line-up that we have ever had."

Gal is one of shorter guys with a long reach. Opponents have to bend a bit to land a good one. In the mean time they are defending their upper torso which is umm yep being constantly bruised. Id back Gal against any Kiwi, but I recon it would be rigged anyway so leave it alone. U go first Birdy.
