Galvin v the Tigers

I remember it being a big talking point around the time Sonny Bill walked out on the dogs, especially on here. It was reignited a few years later when the Storm got done rorting it. There’s probably an argument to be had about it. Would be an interesting trial to see go ahead.
Apples and oranges.

Lachlan Galvin is a footballer. Sonny Bill Williams is a bus driver.

Social media posts made by Jarome Luai and Sunia Turuva have landed the Wests Tigers in legal trouble, with Lachie Galvin's management company serving the club with a legal letter claiming the teenager has been bullied. Luai and Turuva both made pointed social media posts in the wake of Galvin's decision not to accept a new deal with the Tigers, and the 19-year-old will test the open market instead.

Ain’t so tough now hey boys…
Being sent a letter by an agent isn't a "serving a legal letter".

The media are really doing a shit job here. And are carrying a lot of weight for Isaac Moses.

They stuffed Bud Sullivan around a fair bit too... sign him, he relocates, play him (granted his form was not good), drop him, shop him around, tell him he's not in coaches plans and free to go, push him into a loan deal (yes, he agreed - best getting out of that environment, playing and developing), probably had to relocate again. I hope he negotiated new terms so he has the whip hand if he wants to extend his loan deal with Souths until his contract expires... At least they are paying him decent coin (overs).

Maybe they aren't bullying their young signings, but gee they treat them like shit.

The fyck?

Every club shops players around, there wouldn’t be a single club in the comp who doesn’t have players they’ve told are free to leave. How’s Ravalawa and Blake Lawrie going?

As for Bud, he was given a big money 4 year deal and started the year as our halfback. He was completely diabolical in every single game he played, goes to souths and in his first interview admits he was 10kgs over weight at the tigers. How about take responsibility, get yourself into shape for the role you’ve signed on for.

What, no other club does?

None of the clubs would challenge it as most of tyhem realise the financiual sense it makes.

It would be a difficult sell for a player if they challenged it as there is no "limit" on how much of money they could earn, provided the club was salary cap compliant. I mean, does anyone think a court would say "yes, a single RL player should be able to earn $9 million+ per season" based on the codes finances?

As for Galvin getting named today, well I never wanted him dropped, however FFS if you’re going to drop him then have the backbone to stand by your decision. Bringing him back after 1 week is hilarious. This club makes it so hard sometime…

Be interested in your perspective if, if challenged, the salary cap would also be considered a restraint of trade?
The cap was referenced as a reason for the draft not being acceptable in the case.

Ie. They'd already restrained trade to acheive the competitive outcome.

I think the repeated failures of clubs to manage their cash flows is an easy pitch. Remember that is why there is a cap, it's not equality, it's stupidity insulation.

It is easy to frame that stand alone clubs in outright salary competition either break the competition or have to pay lower salaries to individually survive.

Dropped an underperforming player? The horror! He would have been 4th or 5th choice half for us this season had we not loaned him out, at least this way he has a chance of playing first grade.

The only mistake we made with him waa signing him in the first place.

I feel like it would be a player who challenges it. If the cap was removed then I would imagine majority of clubs wouldn’t really be able to up their wagebill but a few definitely could and would dominate, then again the 3 clubs I have in mind absolutely dominate in grand final appearances with Penrith recently coming close. If they are dominant now do they really want it to change?

???

Dropping Galvin was for his sake. So he didn't have to be confronted with fans booing him.

Maybe things have calmed down a bit now and he can just concentrate on playing football.

Yeah bringing him back at Leichhardt where its more hostile.

His more chance of getting booed this week with a pro tigers crowd then yesterday with a 50/50 split.

Honestly Benji stuffed up last week dropping him.

Going back to him now is just as bad then dropping him after a shocker.

The damage done in 7 days is almost irreparable.

I've got no way of knowing this, because I'm not a Tigers fan nor am I in that environment...but sending Galvin down to NSW Cup struck me as a completely emotive decision. I know we've heard conflicting reports, but it seems to boil down to the fact that either the senior players went to Benji, or Benji went to the senior players, to say 'shall we not play Galvin this week'. And I doubt that was based on shielding him from fan flak.

The Tigers fans on here seem like good people, so it doesn't fill me with any sort of glee to say this...but the past week seems to have highlighted that this club has a long, long way to go and any enthusiasm about an upswing in fortunes might need to be tempered. This week called for cool, calm, professional heads, and none were forthcoming. Only a marquee player making mutinous social media posts, a big signing winger who couldn't keep his mitts off socials either then couldn't handle his emotions on the weekend, a coach who didn't pick his best 6 then couldn't pilot his side to a win over the bottom-placed team, and a CEO who failed to keep a lid on all of the above.

No doubt there's talent at the Tigers now but they need a lot more professionalism than the last week has offered up to go anywhere meaningful.

No reason we can’t name him whilst fully fit, he still makes our strongest 17… the kid is 19, surely he’d just wanna get out there and play footy. Plus anything to get Doueihi out of the halves as he is hopeless

Big decisions to be made once Latu Fainu is recovered from his injury though

But as he said that’s a very hard sell by a player whose restraint only kicks in if a club actually wants to sign that player for above the current total cap amount. You can’t claim restraint of trade if no one actually wants to pay you what you’re demanding.

Another superleague group are the only ones who would challenge the salary cap. And more likely they just breakaway from comp altogether rather than challenge anything.

Agree. It was handled all wrong and the inmates clearly run the asylum over at the Tigers. Comes down to a lack of an experienced coach and coaching staff I think.
