It's really odd being disappointed by a 12 point win against a team we are historically bad against. I guess this is what supporting a good team where both team and fans have expectations. Good to see they're happy in the sheds but are completely cognisant of their short comings in the second half (and late in the first half honestly).

The big issue has been the impact of Finucane's loss on the defensive effort. Without him, we got stuck with Fifita, Tolman, and Williams in the middle and the defensive structure returned to the 2019-2021 levels. Zero to no line speed and soft first contact leading to conceding quick play the balls. It's not coincidence that the team looked better once McInnes, Hunt, and Toby came back on the field.

Strangest sighting in the crowd tonight, that old VFL player Dermott Brereton.

I was just reading an article on the game on the wwos site and they were showing tweets about Talakai from Aussie Rules players.
What is going on???

Most things have been covered, but a couple of things for me;

Katoa - didn’t look fit. He was hobbling around and didn’t appear to have his speed. There was a break in the first half and he could barely muster a jog to keep up with play, didn’t get anywhere near making himself an option. Should have played Ikavalu.

Fifita - I’ve said it every game, he’s our weakest link. No impact with ball in hand, slow, looks like a target in defence and looks likely to either get beat or give a penalty everytime he’s involved in defence.

Hynes - Looks to be 2nd guessing himself in defence, a lot - work to do structurally I think.

Ramien - Lots of headless chicken moments in defence, maybe caused by or causing the Hynes defensive issue

Suspect Katoa and Kennedy played busted.

Hynes form has dropped off which is to be expected. The media hype is a bit OTT compared to how he actually going. He is doing well just not well as the media reckon.

Right edge was iffy again. Hynes and Nikora both went low quite a bit and looked slow getting back into the line. Jesse tried to rush up a few times. That edge just isn't in synch yet.

Fifita does look cumbersome but has narrowed his role. His presence is needed without Finucane and Wade.

My mum was at the game and kept talking about how she walked into him. I was saying there’s no chance. How odd

Mundine was at the Tigers game the other week. Thought that was an odd one

Let’s talk about how Nicho bombed that try down the right side. What’s doing there?

He shows to Jesse and Garrick moves to Jesse then comes back to Hynes and its too late to make a good pass. There was enough space for Jesse to get away clean. Hynes over thought it.

The left edge attack in the first half was superb. Rightly Sifa is getting the plaudits but the work from the inside, often Hynes and Brailey was good to hold up the defence and land quality long passes. Moylan's pass selection and touch was first class, as was Kennedy's.

The often unnoticed thing was Wilton's work as a decoy. He was very conscious to run the right line and avoid any contact with the defence. It showed excellent attention to detail that created space for Talakai and didn't allow any Mitch Moses like swan diving from defenders looking for the obstruction penalty. He then ran the right line for the last try of the first half.

Also first time back in the ET stand since the eels game. The members bar was awesome no lines at all. Southern comfort can do one though f**ken horrible.

I still can’t believe that first half performance. Second half the weather and team went to shit but my goodness that first 40 was fun.

Whilst I think the hype about Hynes is probably higher than his form deserves - I don't agree that his form has really dropped off.

His defence was ok IMO. 20 tackles with 95.24% efficiency (1 missed tackle), this compared to Moylan making 20 but missing 4.
He only trailed Talakai for tackle breaks, had the quickest play the ball speed, and contributed across the board with line break, line break assist, try assist, etc. I thought his kicking game with the wind was great.

He still has a couple of moments of sketchy handling and overthinking, but I'm confident with him on the field.

In regards to Fifita, he is playing limited minutes and I still think he has something to bring to this team. However, not having Finucane on the field meant we were playing with Fifita, Tolman, and Williams in the middle defence. Line speed evaporated and the team was on the backfoot. His work rate for 21 minutes was actually not bad at all.

The thing about the Sharks attack this season has been on this big emphasis of giving players multiple options to take on any edge movement. You rightly pointed out, Wilton was doing a lot of good decoy work that worked because he was always a genuine threat to get the ball - AND did the work to ensure he got through the line or was on the inside shoulder. This paid off for his own try when the defence went straight to Talakai and Hynes fed him a nice short ball.

It's similar to what occurred in the Eels game. The Sharks were finding great success with Kennedy sweeping behind to the right, and Hynes sweeping behind to the left, but the Eels adjusted and started going hard at both Kennedy and Hynes. So what did the team do on the game winning try? Moylan fed a short ball to Wilton because the defence was going hard at Hynes in that situation.

It's this philosophy from Fitz that I'm really enjoying. No player is ever just a standard decoy player - they're always a genuine option - even the middle forwards near the play the ball. BHU scored in the Dragons game from a Brailey grubber when they were setup for a play out left. BHU and Tolman were running for a hit-up, the kick, or to be a decoy and it allowed Brailey to read the defence was going hard to the deeper Sharks. It's very structured play that allows players to read and react to the game in front of them. It makes it difficult to defend against.
