I'm not sure if it was true or not, but the literal only reason he was picked was because of the way he presented himself in the interview.

Sure interviews are important for a corporate job or something like that but in a results driven business? lol

Its like choosing Jason Taylor over Craig bellamy cause Taylor wore a Tie and Bellamy didn't

anyways the Taylor era was a mess but it was over the minute Cleary had a full cap to spend. And he f**ked that up aswell. We really just need to stick with a coach for 3-4 years first before we can expect to make any inroads
Incredible! ...there had to be someone who had a close relationship with Taylor? or a friend of a friend? Whoever was responsible for that is responsible for this...

Cleary was more probably about Panic buying and wouldn’t have been needed maybe if Taylor wasn’t in the equation but Taylor was handed the world on a plate ...

Taylor could talk the talk for the cameras though.Ill give him that ...Even when things were at there worst I remember very clearly he stayed pretty upbeat and he kept coming up with stuff that sounded credible

The other thing I remember very clearly was Taylor had the blessing from the boss/club with whatever he wanted mainly about Farrah ...Taylor should have been dropped right there..and the article said that he and the boss got along famously ..I remember it was a CEO that started a bit after the Farrah drama started and it sounded like he was the knight in shining armour that would sort everything out between them but obviously couldn’t and ended up taking Taylor’s side I can’t remember who that was but I’m assuming it was Pascoe?? Which would be really weird considering the shit Pascoe got into supporting Farrah with the Ambassador fiasco later on. And he’s still with the club..

Tact a factor for Taylor at Wests Tigers

Jason Taylor’s ability to involve the powerful Wests Tigers playing group in his plans is a major reason behind his long-awaited return to the NRL coaching ranks.

A Western Suburbs junior, Taylor has been waiting desperately for another first-grade appointment since he was sacked as South Sydney coach at the end of 2009 following an incident during the team’s Mad Monday celebrations.

Taylor has served as Trent Robinson’s assistant at the Sydney Roosters for the past two seasons and beat a number of candidates to the Tigers job including Anthony Griffin, Nathan Brown and existing coaching staff members David Kidwell and Todd Payten.

The Tigers boast some of the most exciting talent in the competition, and Taylor’s proven ability to get the best out of young halves helped convince the newly appointed Tigers’ board that he was the man to nurture Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses.

Under Taylor’s tutorship at the Roosters, Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney won a premiership and played State of Origin, and the Tigers are hoping for more of the same.

But above all, the Tigers are confident Taylor has the ability to empower his squad and give players a significant say in the style of play that can return the joint-venture to the finals after several years in the doldrums.

This is an important factor at a club where the opinions of Tigers stars has played some part in unseating the past two first-grade coaches - Tim Sheens and earlier this month Mick Potter.

Taylor’s appointment was made in conjunction with Phil Moss’s unveiling as the club’s first ever general manager of football operations.

“Jason has had success at a lot of clubs and he knows exactly what’s needed to succeed,” Tigers chief executive Grant Mayer told AAP.

"His knowledge of working with halves played a part in it. He’s done wonders with Maloney and Pearce.

"But it’s not just about that, it’s his overall coaching philosophy.

"He involves his players in his game plans and they buy into it.

“There’s such exciting talent coming through at Wests Tigers … and Jason has been given the keys to the car so to speak.”

Taylor has had to work hard to restore his reputation after he was unceremoniously sacked by the Rabbitohs over a night out gone wrong, where Taylor was punched down a set of stairs by Souths’ player David Fa’alogo at a Sydney pub.

Although a shaken Taylor spoke out in defence of his actions on that night, Souths decided their coach had put himself in a poor position and acted swiftly.

However, since that day Taylor has been perhaps the best-qualified coach without a top job in the NRL, given the success he enjoyed during his brief stint at Parramatta and then in rebuilding the Rabbitohs from the ground up.

Taylor will have a say in a new-look coaching staff, with Payten unlikely to stay on board.

Mayer described the appointments of Taylor and Moss as “good, strong decisions” - the pair having worked together previously at Parramatta.
The Tigers’ restructuring of their coaching and administration department after a tumultuous year on and off the field has also served to weaken rivals the Roosters and Penrith - where Moss was employed as football manager.

Mayer said Moss’s role overseeing the workings of the football department was inspired more by AFL clubs than Phil Gould’s job as the head honcho at the Panthers.
But he praised Moss for his impact at Penrith in rebuilding their roster to become a finals force.
(referring to Taylor)He has done wonders with Pearce and Maloney. Although they were poor at the start of the season, Pearce in particular finished it on fire. Better than I ever thought he could play.”
It’s all there isn’t it ... (Grant Meyer the then CEO never heard of him).. Taylor’s hired because the western suburbs part of the board want to bring back their favourite son ...Taylors a kid himself unlike Griffin who’s closer to the age of Potter and Sheens..so they think Taylor can relate to kids as a head coach as well as he has as an assistant coach..(this logic is scary from the start)They want to make sure their star halves pairing have the best in the lands half’s expert (after all James Maloney and Mitchell Pearce can thank Jason Taylor for becoming the players they are).....West tigers create a general manager Phil Gould type position for Phil Moss (never heard of him iether) to avoid things going “Souths like” and really believe they have everything covered ... Robbie was the only one who saw through or let’s say exposed Taylor from the start but no one took any notice .. ...of course Brookes and Moses aren’t going to complain coz they were supposed to be the biggest beneficiaries from Taylor’s expertise in the halves....and Noone’s going to make a fuss about a coach when I clearly remember the article saying him and the CEO by this time Pascoe were such good friends.. the team did eventually get their “turn on the coach” mojo back, only way too late ....They had a golden opportunity to get rid of Taylor at the start of 2017 or definately even during 2016 that could have fixed mostly everything but didn’t...Griffin would have been perfect as a coach in that first interview..

There’s your boy if u want to blame anyone....Cleary was in a position where he had limited time to create a team out of nothing at a club that had the worst reputation and only $$ as a lure. ..So he gos for Packer and Matalinos ..two props he knows from the warriors with experience .. ..and Packer being reborn etc .so potential leadership there for the younger perhaps vulnerable players and he’s going alright at the Dragons who offered him a 2 year extension..so he offered a longer deal to get him....so Matelino gets the same .Matalinos was scary at the warriors ..Cleary was definitely the only coach that would bring Benji back at that time no no forget about it..that’s a fact and Farrah which would have got us in the 8 this year..he said basically he new straight away when talking to Benji on the phone to buy..Benji does so much for so little I Bet his Mrs made sure he got a good pay increase for next year or a good deal anyway...that’s why it took a bit of time to cut the
D deal with him..Benji knew he was worth more and so did all the heirarchy. ...Anyway So Cleary went for leadership and experience with enough skill with Reynolds ...Mbye was being called the best fullback going around with a good character reference from legends ...I can get my head around his logic with all these calls from Cleary running blind trying to get a good mix of skill and leadership and experience with limited time and no attraction to the club apart from $$...and then who is going to turn down the offer he got at Penrith..Cleary has been unemployed for years bear in mind.. ...No Taylor’s your boy if u want to blame anyone for where we are now ..or whoever had the lack of brains to hire and then not fire him during or at the end of 2016 preferably before then..... Cleary only came and went because of Taylor..Griffin would have been the perfect choice in that first interview..

The only reason Griffin left Penrith was because Gould thought he could push him around...I liked what I saw from Griffin at Penrith from day 1

Most have forgotten our failure to not make something out of Matt Lodge. Before his troubles in New York, we had let him go and had no nrl contract. He moves to the Broncos and plays good footy....yet another Wests Tigers fail with players.

Is this really a failure ? Personally I think the club got rid of him because he was out of control. Subsequent events appear to prove that we got this right.

He is playing okay for the Broncos but they got him when he was at a low point.

Unpopular opinion:

Papenhuyzen isn’t that good and Bellamy stuffed up by changing their spine so close to the finals. ATM all he is is quick. No ball skills and not safe at the back. He needs to be put in the gap, he doesn’t create it himself. If he was our fullback this year everyone would be saying he is shit.

It might be that, going forward, that when it comes to recruitment and retention the head coach should not have the final say.

From an outsider looking in, to me it looks like your clubs needs a very good Recruitment Manager to work alongside the head coach on these matters. Some coaches can be very good at bring out the best of the talent in their playing squad, but when it comes to recruitment and retention are really poor.

For example, look at Des Hasler's tenure at the Bulldogs and the stuff ups he made there with recruitment and retention in that squad.

On the Taylor thing..we got him for a few reasons but the main one was he was cheap, dirt cheap. He was on about 250 a year compared to probably 800 for Madge. But the old story, pay peanuts and you get monkeys.....who could pick Rankin in front of JAC, that alone should have got the club seeking medical advise from a mental health expert

There are a lot of teams who finished below us this year that actually have good teams on paper. Eg Dragons, panthers and Knights.

Dragons actually have 3 origin forwards and 2 origin backs plus Widdop. Panthers have origin halves and are behind a massive pack of forwards and the Knights went on a signing spree and they all finished below us. The only difference between the good teams and say us are like 1-2 players. Tedasco was the big loss cos he is like top 3 players in the game.

I don't think we need to buy any star or break the bank but what we need to do is next team a young gun junior is ready to play 1st grade we need to retain them and build a team of working forwards and backs who can both tackle as well as have a bit of flair.

If we could just have kept Tedasco we would probably have won the close games we lost.

The storm is a good example of good coaching they only really have Smith and Munster who are stars with everyone else doing a job. I'm hoping Madge can help turn things with the current squad and young guns that come from SG Ball and turn them into solid first graders. Hassler did it this year with a team of plodders surrounded by Turbos and DCE but they are all basically manly juniors.

And last I heard the Dragons had/have a specialist recruitment officer who recruited a few of those players ....Pretty sure he joined up with them about the last year Benji was there

We did and we probably did the right thing. I assume the club realised what a loose merkin he was.

Guarantee you that was right...he and the group of morons he hung out with at the time were full on aggressive dickheads.. one was the son of an aquintance who used to brag about Lodge's acts of tough guy stupidity .we had him as he was then and he would have ended up in jail if he'd stayed.. it's only his NY adventure that's woken him up.

I'm pretty sure he got punted from the Storm because he wanted to belt Bellamy?
