Everyone likes to (rightfully) bag us for terrible recruitment decisions - Rankin over JAC, Blair over Fifita etc. But we've had some terrible luck with deadshits screwing us over too - Suli, Lodge, Simona and now it seems Matterson.

We just haven't been able to take a trick for the past decade.
We also have been stupid and let ourselves be pissed on. We should have tried to sack suli in a way that he couldnt go elsewhere. Lodge and Simona, not much you can do about that as they were huge incidents.

Unpopular opinion:

Papenhuyzen isn’t that good and Bellamy stuffed up by changing their spine so close to the finals. ATM all he is is quick. No ball skills and not safe at the back. He needs to be put in the gap, he doesn’t create it himself. If he was our fullback this year everyone would be saying he is shit.
Bellamy reminds me of John Madden, awesome regular season coach and fantastic at developing players and systems but not so good come September. I wonder if Bellamy would have so great if ended up at the Tigers instead of the storm. Smith Cronk Slater Inglis. I'm sure most coaches could get decent results with that nucleus. Remember him in Origin he was awful, Steve Turner on the wing anyone...

As for saying we are one of two players away from the top sides that is rubbish. We are miles apart. Yes on our best day we can beat pretty much anyone. The problem is those top four teams have far more good days than we do. They are wayyy more consistent then we are. Look at the storm, they aren't great in attack but they do so much right, kick chase, win away from home far more than most teams, They make you work for everything.
We don't do this and that's why we are 9th/10th and Storm in pretty much lock ins for the top 4.

Fair enough mate. I didn’t see him do anything against Easts, Raiders, Souths or Manly. Sure he carved up some rubbish like Parra etc but when it came to the crunch against decent teams he couldn’t make a dent. This was highlighted when he put in that ridiculous grubber that went dead in goal on the second tackle when the storm were getting well on top.

I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but I believe the hype was over the top. If he was our 1 his deficiencies would get shown up a lot more then they do at the storm.

That's the point. We've made some bad recruitment decisions over the years but had more than our share of deadshits screwing us over.

Regarding Suli, there is no way you can sack someone and block them going elsewhere. The NRL isn't going to deregister players for not showing up to training.

I suppose you could argue it's our fault for signing blokes like Suli and Lodge given their history, but other clubs were fighting to sign these guys too.

Even we kept him pretty well contained when we played them IIRC...

From memory didn't the nrl put some sort of system in place to stop playing who were sacked at one club going straight to another club ala fergo ?

I think they talked about it for a couple of weeks and then completely forgot about it in true NRL fashion.

The NRL is ran by RLPA, player agents, channel 9 and a couple of self interested clubs.
Your dreaming if you think they will do something that helps the game and all 16 franchise. Your even having a bigger dream if you think they might introduce rules that actually make it a level playing field.

The game is on a rapid spiral down and is in a massive head to head with rugby to see who self destructs first. I guess there is a glimmer of hope with the new chairman jumping on board soon who comes with plenty of raps. Flicking Greenberg has to be a day one job
