Gene Simmons wants to sue you

Kiss star Gene Simmons recently provoked the ire of music fans by declaring that the record industry has been too soft on those engaged in illegal downloading, calling on labels to “Make sure there are no incursions. Sue everybody. Be litigious. Take their homes, their cars. Don’t let anybody cross that line.”
Those comments provoked a team of anonymous hackers to overloaded and crash GeneSimmons.com and SimmonsRecords.com before redirecting traffic from the sites to the BitTorrent site Pirate Bay.
Once the sites were back up and running Simmons responded:
Some of you may have heard a few popcorn farts re: our sites being threatened by hackers. Our legal team and the FBI have been on the case and we have found a few, shall we say “adventurous” young people, who feel they are above the law. And, as stated in my MIPCOM speech, we will sue their pants off.
First, they will be punished. Second, they might find their little butts in jail, right next to someone who’s been there for years and is looking for a new girl friend.
We will soon be printing their names and pictures. We will find you. You cannot hide. Stay tuned
Simmons rant seems to have worn out the aging rocker who has been hospatilised after collapsing from dehydration.

Anyone who has read his nauseating autobiography will not be surprised by this rant. His greed is as abnormally huge as his tongue

Haven't read the book but yourcomments about his greed are not uncommon. There is a kind of a lame show on one of the fox music channels called That metal show which makes mention of that fact often and they all appear to be pretty big kiss fans.

It's not killing the music industry, it's killing the major record labels, which is a good thing.

Music will be better for it in the long run.

Artists will have to rely on making good music and touring to make money, rather than getting famous because of elaborate marketing campaigns and media saturation provided to a privileged few by the record labels.

Gene Simmons is fine, but there are plenty of bands out there that put out good music but have nothing to show for it and no clout in the industry to fight it.

TBH I dont know many people that tolerate theft, why would Gene Simmons be any different?

all record labels are affected if they cease to exist then making a living from music is all that much harder and for new artists near impossible

New artists don't need record labels at all, these days all the tools they need to make and promote their music are at their fingertips for next to no cost.

All they need to bring to the table is talent, drive and ambition. If they are good at what they do people will follow them.

Its nice to say its all at their fingertips, but the illegal downloading of music does not stop at artists attached to major record labels. It hits the independents as well. People dont stop and say 'Oh Karnivool, they did this all on their own with ambition and talent and drive, I wont download it'. Its a solid stance for Simmons to make, he can afford the hit to his popularity and he can afford to be litigious.

That's why they tour, they make their living off of ticket sales and merchandise.

Though there are still ways to make money from albums if the artists connect directly to the fans and provide a good package that is worth buying. Obviously that'd be after they have a decent sized following though, and a bit of money in the bank.

So we condone theft because artists can make their money off touring? Thats pretty poor. I really can't think of any other example where there is such a disregard for proprietary rights.

And yes, a good package goes some way to selling cd's. However, even those bands with a loyal fan base will feel the adverse effects of downloading.

Mind you I download music only from legal means. Reason being is you have a guaranteed sound quality.
