Panthers boss Brian Fletcher and captain Isaah Yeo have spoken out about attacks on the club by Fox Sports pundits, saying Penrith will consider legal action against the broadcaster.
The Panthers hammered the Raiders 53-12 last weekend and have now won five straight and nine of their past 11 games against them. Fletcher said Fox Sports’ coverage of issues in the match was the most recent example in a history of the broadcaster unfairly criticising the club. The Panthers board will meet this week to discuss banning players from appearing on Fox Sports. Legal action is also being considered.
“We’ve got to protect our players,” Fletcher said. “And we’ve got to protect our coaches and their reputations ... We will discuss it as a board and we will look at all options.”
He said Fox Sports pundits, “sit there without knowing what our club is about and tear strips off the reputations of good people.”
Yeo said: “As a club we understand people are going to have opinions, and they aren’t all going to be good, however it’s ... tarnishing a brand that doesn’t deserve to be tarnished, and I think the public are starting to understand this, which is pleasing.
“The fact that we are giving this more oxygen than what it deserves is something I’m not overly happy about and will only allow for another rebuttal ... but you can’t allow them to continue to take potshots at the club without comment.”
Fletcher was angry about the attacks on head coach Ivan Cleary in particular. The implication is that the coach lacks class.
“The focus should be on the opposing coach after we thrash them, not ours, but that’s not how things play out,” Fletcher said. “As a club, we can’t just sit back and let this go on. It all started a few years ago when there was an article about how strong the Raiders’ reserve grade team was and we smashed them. Then they came out and called our players mug lairs. And now the attacks continue. The latest was the stuff with Jaeman [Salmon].
“To say, as some have on Fox, that parents shouldn’t send their kids to Penrith is just outrageous. That’s an insult to good people like Kevin Kingston, Joe Galuvao and Glen Liddiard, who work in that area. They say things that attack everything this club stands for and then expect us to play ball and put people on their shows. It’s not on and we have a duty to explore every area to protect our club against the rubbish that is said.”
Yeo is proud of the culture at the club and says it is respected throughout the game.
“I know the feedback we get, not just from Penrith supporters but the supporters of other teams, about how much we do for the community, and how good we are after games getting around and seeing the fans,” Yeo said.
“When you’re getting feedback like that, your culture has to be strong. You can see it after games – the Panthers players are the last ones out on the field, signing things for the fans, particularly after losses. If you look at that on its own, you can see how strong our culture is.
“Looking at our cultural showcase the other night, and the amount of people we had there – from Harold Matthews to first grade – that shows a strong culture from the bottom to the top.
“We’re good people and do great work in the community. And once you know that, other people’s comments don’t matter. There are going to be certain people in the media who are goingto make comments, but we understand who we are. We’re proud of what we do. We know what we bring to the competition and we understand the work we do in the community.”

I hope this threat is a promiseWhat a brilliant reponse from Yeo and Fletcher. The rubbish from Fox (especially Kent) has gone on for far too long.
The continual sniping by Fox and Kent is to the point of being demfamitry and must stop.
Well said.
I just hope they ignore them. Don’t do media or promos.I hope this threat is a promise
I'm happy that the club is taking this stand not just for the club, the coaching staff and the players but also the community who are proud of the team. I stopped watching NRL 360 last year because of the crap they say about our club. As my own silent protest i shared the cultural showcase to the nrl360 Facebook page. I find it extremely disrespectful that a major sponsor of NRL allows its staff to repeatedly trash the best team in the competition for the past 3 years. Unbelievable.Panthers boss, Yeo slam bitter Fox hunt

My preference is to do both.I just hope they ignore them. Don’t do media or promos.
Fair enough; I am happy for the club to do what they think is best. I 100% agree with the sentiment. My preference is to do both.
What he says is borderline slander. Kent needs to be held accountable, and so does his employer.Fair enough; I am happy for the club to do what they think is best. I 100% agree with the sentiment.
My thoughts about just ignoring them is that it doesn’t give them the oxygen to keep up the attacks; I can just imagine the ‘kicking stones’ comments that will come out of Kenty if we do go down the route of legal action.
Edit; but really happy for both Fletcher and Yeo to come out and say we are proud of who we are. Because I definitely am.
They have their favourites. Tigers and Dragons cop a fair amount of crap as well and not always deserved. Sticky (more so than the Raiders club) Wayne, Roosters, Souffs and Latrell on the other hand are untouchable.Kent is supposed to be a sports journalist I.e. commenting on how teams, individuals perform on the field of their chosen sport. Attacking the club, its coaches and players collectively and individually has nothing to do with being a sports journalist. If the governing body doesn't have a problem with the club or its players then clearly he has a personal agenda against the club and certain players. Yes, other sports journalists go beyond what happens on the field but not as much as Kent or fox and not targeting one club consistently.
Lets hope so He has crossed the line Absolute tosser I hope Brandys tore him a new oneKent just thinks he is an edge lord. I think he has bitten off a bit more than he can chew this time though.
Thanks for sharing. This idiot has put Brandy in a really difficult situation with him working for Fox and also being on Panthers board. Judging by the reaction of the other blokes sitting at that table when Kent lost his shit you would think he copped it from Fox. Would love to hear a response from Brandy.Panthers boss, Yeo slam bitter Fox hunt

I don't think Brandy should lower himself to respond (Conflict of Interest). Let the board decide .We will never know if Salmon was responding to crowd heckling or not .In the past, Brandy's response has generally been wimpy.
What's needed is a protest by the fans at a game.
A few suggestions would be- FOX SUX T-shirts in the front rows and giant Kenty clown heads.
-I'm not saying Brandy should do anything.I don't think Brandy should lower himself to respond (Conflict of Interest). Let the board decide .We will never know if Salmon was responding to crowd heckling or not .
Maybe MG can get him in a dark alley sometime.
Thats a great idea but seeing that midget in a MG head lock outside chemist warehouse would be way betterIf Panthers really want to change Fox’s behaviours, what they need to do is to get our social media machine to start highlighting the sponsors who support the NRL360 (Chemist Warehouse, Drummond Golf etc) and organise campaigns to boycott them until they withdraw their support or engage with the shows producers to get fairer content.
