Get ready for the Grand Final festival

SYDNEY will be rugby league's celebration central for the week leading up to the Grand Final this year thanks to a plan hatched by the NRL and the State Government.

The centrepiece of the proposed football festival will be a Melbourne-style street parade of Grand Final stars and rugby league legends.

NRL Chief executive David Gallop has met Ian McDonald, the minister responsible for Events NSW, to discuss a seven-day football festival.

"It's about making Grand Final week a much bigger celebration," Mr Gallop said.

"There's a real sense of anticipation around the start of the competition and making sure the Grand Final is something more than 80 minutes of football is going to be important for us strategically."

Mr Gallop admitted the NRL had to become more creative in promoting the biggest game of the year - and branding the final throughout the CBD and NRL heartland in Sydney's West would be part of the plan.

"Western Sydney's such a competitive environment now for the football codes and we need to be conscious of that and make sure that Grand Final week is an opportunity for us to remind people it's our homeland," Mr Gallop said.

Until now, the Grand Final breakfast has been the highlight of the biggest game of the season but the NRL is aiming to make the final build-up more interactive for football fans with the street parade as well as training clinics.

"The idea is that we get more involved in the community, particularly the use of areas like the Domain and the CBD," Mr Gallop said. "It means having contact with the stars who are going to play on that Sunday.

"At the moment, we bring them into town for the breakfast but they disappear come nine o'clock and we'd like to do more with them as part of the game's promotion."

Meanwhile, Mr Macdonald said the Government wanted to enhance the value of the NRL and the state's economy at the same time. "In the end it's not just about sport - it's about jobs," he said. "The more we can attract people to major events, the better for our economy - and we are enhancing existing events as well as attracting new ones."

Mr Macdonald has asked the NRL to provide the Government with a wish list for the festival, including street banners, family entertainment and live sites for the game.

Great quote, finally needed to be said.

This is a wonder move by the NRL, a move that could be argued as should have been done years earlier. The NRL Grand Final is the show piece our season (excluding representative fixtures) and should be treated as such. The AFL does an excellent job during their Grand Final week, the NFL is the benchmark and to see our code finally stepping up is a positive sign.

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I honestly have never looked forward to rugby league as much as I am right now. I think this is going to be a massive year for the greatest game of all.

A fine idea, long overdue.

It's going to suck if the GF involves non-Sydney teams though, as there will be friction over how much time the players are expected to spend appearing at events in Sydney. Imagine if it's Broncos v Titans and they're required to spend all week in NSW.

Yeah I agree, everything seems a bit more professional this year, not sure why just the vibe...

That Houston thing went away on its own pretty quietly.. The shift in behaivour has been by the idea "if you are charged with any thing you are sacked, if your innocent go have a cry with Lindy Chamberlain and will we talk about it then" Which is good, still cannot believe Manly let Brett Stewart play with a rape charge over his head

My rugby league viewing career began in 95, i've pretty much had my entire league watching life dogged by super league and the sh*te surrounding that since. This is def the most momentum league has felt like having in that time.

The thing that has helped most IMO was the style of play last year, the second ref cleaned up the ruck so well and for the first time in a while some very very good free flowing rugby league was played again, that's what seemed to get the real groundswell of support in the back half of last year.

Rugby League now needs a couple of Sydney premierships to really take any wind out of GWS sails before 2012, a couple of the bigger sydney sides winning is exaclty what the game needs right now.

Jack Gibson once said that fan fare andmedia commitments were nothing but a distraction to the players. And that was 30 years ago, imagine how much the players are distracted now?
