Get rid of the video referee

I thought the ref crackdown was brilliant and took much of the negative crap out of the game.
They were reaming one side in the first half and the other in the second half. Some games got the pea blown out of the whistle while others didn't. In short, it was done inconsistently, which made it a shemozzle.

We should replace conversions with something like they have in American football with their points after touchdown where all the players are involved. It should be the most exciting part of the game.

Why are some people totally obsessed with everything American? Anyone would think it's the only country on the planet. I say nuke the bastards.

the problem is not the referees or the video referee or the bunker it is that the commentators and cameras over analyse each play and go on about it for too long because there is not enough else going on to commentate on. Too many cameras, too many commentators, too much time between the try and the kick off to restart play.

You don’t find it exciting when a kicker has a chance to win the game from the sideline, with wind and sometimes rain factored in, compared to a PAT where 90% of the time, the result is a given?

The only time it is good in the NFL is when they go for a two point conversion, and didn’t the NRL trial something like that in a game last pre season?

Most of the annoying stoppages have nothing to do with the video ref. Kick a ball out of play and the bloke who feeds the scrum or kicks the dropout stands there watching a clock until 5 seconds remain, then play on. I hate it. If everyone is in position, blow the whistle and play on. If they're not getting in position, penalise them.
I thought the ref crackdown was brilliant and took much of the negative crap out of the game. We were just getting to the point where teams were actually following the rules of the game instead of trying to bend them and then they backflipped.
And guess what? After an exciting start to the season, the crackdown finished and the roosters and storm made the gf

People that want the bunker to go would be the ones sooking the loudest over bad calls.

Remember when the NRL backed the refs to enforce the rules and how pissed off everyone got?
Imagine if the refs were expected to make a call, people on here would have a full on Chernobyl.

There were A LOT of fans happy with the crackdown

It was having the desired effect, making coaches play to the rules

Was that the one when the touchie put his flag up? Maybe not. The one where the touchie put his flag up (it was a Sharks try I think) was certainly a howler, ref should have pulled up play and not even gone upstairs. I don't think this situation is covered in the rules, so you'd think they'd be fixing that little oversight.

Should have been treated like when a ball hits the ref.

Scrum to restart play.

the video ref gets to watch the replay 1 time and in real time. 15 seconds to make the call. The broadcasters must also play a part - No replays in slow motion.

One view is all a in-goal touch judge needs for general play items like dropped ball or held up

Howlers usually come from blurry slow motion replays

But I will support the bunker use when a line comes into play as thats when everyone watches and its pretty black and white

Anyway the most qualified person on how to use the bunker as a video ref are people like you or me

We have watched RL on TV for 20 plus years way more than ex-players or ex-refs

They should just restrict its use. Put it back on the players.

2 unsuccessful challenges per team per gam, that is it. If they use their challenges up on correct decisions and lose on a dodgy one that is their problem. You will find the 50/50 ones are eventually not challenged and only the ones they know are wrong are challenged.

If they don't want to do that at least have the on field referee make the decision either on their own whilst watching the replay or in conjunction with the video ref. At least that way you get a consistency between the field ref and video ref. This works well in NFL and Rugby Union.

I'd back a more DRS/challenge style system. Bunker is fine as the model to review the decisions, but the need for referees to refer so many tries because they were in a poor position is getting ridiculous. The idea is to remove the howler so simply give the team/captain 5-10 seconds to decide if they want a referral, otherwise leave it.

I agree. I note they have reduced the shot clock for scrums and drop-outs this year. Hopefully they will continue to tweak it if they feel it is still too long. I would also like to see a different shot clock for something like a knock on within 20 meters of the last play-the-ball. It's Ridiculous to have such a long shot clock for something like a double-knock-on, when both teams are so close to the ball, as opposed to a team that finds touch with a long kick down the field.
