Watching this blow up on several social media sites and i still can believe people still mistakenly think GI retirement was a medical retirement. GI's retirement was never a medical retirement.

He would still be under contract for Souths this year on $900k

if he has gone there for say $500k then Souths should have $400k added to their salary cap for this year

James Maloney was still under contract to the panthers for 2020, he sort a release from that contract to take up a deal with the Catalans dragons. Should panthers still have to pay anything under the cap for maloney this year?

Hence they shouldn't have received cap relief
Its not uncommon for players to forego the final years of there contracts to retire early. Uts happened dozens of times with players usually being parachuted into roles within their clubs.

Souths is one of the few occasions where a club has actually still been hit with loss of cap space (900k last year, 100k this year).

Surely the NRL now has to assign His wage last year to next year's cap?

Oh wait, this is souffs.

It is ridiculous but it’s hard to blame Souths if an employee takes up employment elsewhere. This was all signed off by medical doctors at the NRL.
