Gidley Wants an Origin Jumper

Friday, March 30, 2007 - 4:52 PM

Kurt Gidley wants to play Origin this year and after carrying the Knights to two victories without Johns or Buderus few could argue that if he holds his form a sky blue jumper is his for the taking.

“I would love to play Origin or for Australia this year. It’s what all players strive for and I feel like I’m ready. I played for country last year and that was an amazing experience and something I want to do again”.

The switch to fullback is agreeing with the former half as his star continues to rise.

“I spent the whole pre season training at fullback for the first time. I thought it would give me the chance to run the ball more so I jumped at it”.

What Gidley wasn’t prepared for was to play a lot of dummy half in attack, and it was only an afterthought from Coach Brian Smith in the lead up to Round 1.

“With Bedsy (Danny Buderus) out someone had to do it and Brian asked me to play a bit of dummy half in attack and drop back to fullback in defence”.

The move has clearly worked, in the Knights two opening games Gidley has looked the most dangerous player on the field and appears to be enjoying carving up the opposition on a regular basis.

Gidley though was quick to point out the victories were not that brilliant.

“They were good wins and we will take them. Any club with their two top players out would be happy to win their first two games. Andrew and Danny are great players and the wins have been good but not great”.

The wins have proved that the Knights can win without their talismanic halfback, but Gidley feels that the old maxim, the Knights can’t win without Joey, will be around for a while yet, no matter what the team do when Johns isn’t available.

“For the time being I would say people will keep jumping on the no Joey, no win bandwagon and it shows, every time we don’t have him the odds are literally against us”.

Johns will return this Monday night when the Knights tackle the Raiders in Canberra, and while Gidley is happy to have him back he is under no illusions of it being a walk in the park against the wooden spoon favourites.

“It’s good to have Joey back and he gives us a big boost but the Raiders are always tough in Canberra and I’ve heard from plenty of people say that if they weren’t up against Melbourne last week they would have won”.

The Knights have also been boosted by the mid week re-signing of young prop Daniel Tolar. Plenty of people at the club have a big opinion of him and Gidley is no exception.

“Dan’s a really good player who is only going to get better. He’s been playing well and he has great feet for a big man up front”.

The Knights take on the Raiders in this week’s Monday Night game.
What's everyone's thoughts on his chances? Provided his form stays solid.

Someone tell him he can get an origin jumper from Rebel Sport ;-)

Seriously though, if he keeps his current form up, he's defo in with a damn good shot at bench utility

I doubt he will get a starting position, but if his great form continues i sense a spot on the bench for him. I think he can be NSW's Matt Bowen.

A bit of a side note, but i wonder what Hagan is thinking now. He kept Kidley in the halves for so long with minimal effect, and Smith didn't take long to realise that he isnt a half, and look at his form now.

i agree Ben a starting spot is a bit ambitious, but if he keepe his form up than i think he will def get a bench spot. he is playing awesome footy at the moment! and like ive said before tolar being resigned is great, a very good player who is getting better.

Would be a good utility off the bench. He was being touted in Big League as a possible starting 7 but I seriously doubt that will happen. I can see him filling a Craig Wing type role though.

7? i dont think so, NSW arent that desperate...I hope. Kidley coming off the bench would be good to c, he has played well enough the first 2 rounds lets hope he can keep it up

Who else is going to pay fullback for NSW? He has as good a chance as anyone. Minichello isnt playing flash, Hodgson is just crap now the only danger I can think of is Wade Mckinnon.

Have I left any other contenders out? Luke Patten maybe but I dont think so.

How out of the question is the possibility of:
1/14. Kidley
6. Mullen
7. Johns
9. Buderus
11. Simpson

Johns and Buderus pick themselves, Simpson is always somewhere in the calculations, while Mullen and Kidley may be seen as attractive options because of their combination with Johns/Buderus. If Newcastle can string together a good patch of games between now and the Origin series then we may be looking at a healthy contribution to the Blues lineup.

Do we really want that? Could have a bad effect on our season if those guys are burned out before finals time (touch wood)

I don't think the NSW selectors would be too worried about how the Newcastle fans will be feeling;-) I personally wouldn't mind seeing all players miss out on selection (especially Johns), but it is always good to see player's form rewarded. If we manage to get 3 or more players selected then good for them and the Newcastle coaching staff.

Can you think of what our team would look like with all them out? :|

1. Thaiday/Polglase
6. Abraham?
7. ? (Brown/Walsh if fit)
9. Seu Seu
11. Paterson?

Yeh well said. I love that they get picked for Origin and rewarded for their form but at the same time I just want the Knights to win a bloody premiership again and at the same time I want NSW to win origin back.

But Origin really does work miracles for players. Many players come back from the series just entirely different players. I think any form of representative experience is great, and i wouldn't mind seeing some of the younger players like Walsh get a run.

Hmm... Origin is too awesome to not want maximum number of knights in there. Would love to see Joey, Mullen, Kids, Bedsy, Simmo, Perry and McManus in there. Back to the good old days where we used to have like 6 or 7 players playing for NSW and the roosters will make up the other 7 or so. GOOD OLD DAYSSS

Tahu, Gidley, Hughes, Johns, Buderus, Simpson, Kennedy - what a NSW team that was!
