'Give 'em back': clubs demand

shouldn't be done....it would be a major disadvantage to the clubs that have the bye on the weekend before the 3rd origin match as they would have been without their origin players for the previous 2 origins while some teams had the bye

It should be done with all three, IMO.

If not, then, yeah, the bye situation would have to be sorted.

It would be a huge dissadvantage to certain teams every year if they let the Origin stars play the week before a dead rubber.

Look at the Broncos (and their opponents) this year for example.

the week of SOO1 they were playing Manly, all of their Origin stars were out while manly was fairly unaffected, so Manly get a pretty easy game when normally it would have been a tough one. Now before SOO3 the Broncos play the Panthers, again missing their origin stars, how unfair would it be on the panthers that they would face a full strength broncos team just because the SOO3 was a dead rubber?

can origin, waste of time and a glorified trial for the kangeroo squad.

spoken like a true sheep-f**ker. youre the jealous next door neighbor peering through the window, watching the other kids having all the fun and just wishing you could be included, but you never will be. Kiwi's will never understand origin and how the QLD v NSW rivalry (hatred) works because international league just doesnt have that level of competitivness. Sure we always want to beat the kiwis but at the end of the game - if we lose, its never more than a feeling of "damn, wanted to win that, ah well".

haha new zealand, the left out down syndrome cousin no one wants to play with, kiwis are sooooo infuriated that by the time we play them we don't give a f**k, they can't handle the fact that we'd rather play amongst ourselves than play with them

Who are these ****** who are constantly trying to bring RL down.. you can complain about ch9 not promoting RL enough but most of the anti promotion is coming inside the NRL itself from ppl like this. I'm sure this article just knocked a good 250k off the ratings for origin 3 atleast.

so that's not really fair for the teams that have the bye this week like Parra is it? Manly would only lose their stars for 1 week then, as opposed to Parra losing them for 2.

Also, State of Origin rakes in more $$ than a lousy club game, so that should take precedence.

I really think there needs to be 1 SOO match a year, played on a weekend with no other club games - but due to the $$ that'll never happen.

geez CEO's are a complicated bunch..

on one hand you have them complaining that the NRL should be changing the Origin Times and Round Structure so their "Elite Players" don't get get burnt out and then they turn around and complain that their Players should be able to play for their Clubs in the event of a "Dead Rubber"...

Wouldn't that increase the risk of injury???

Origin Players Must Be Rested: Bennett
by Trad McLean
Friday June 29, 2007

WAYNE Bennett has weighed into the debate over resting players for Origin by warning the league could ‘kill the golden goose’.

NRL clubs this week called for Origin players to be available this weekend because Wednesday’s third game is a dead rubber.

But after the Broncos had their final training session before playing Penrith tomorrow night, the man who has the most to gain by players being available advised against any change.

The Broncos will be missing seven because of Origin commitments against the Panthers, but Bennett said asking the elite players to participate in another game was lunacy.

“That’s never going to happen,” said Bennett when asked about the chance of players being available before an Origin match that was not a series decider.

“The other thing is the players just do not need that extra game.

“If we do that we are trying to kill the goose that is laying the golden eggs.”

The Broncos face a tough battle to win their third game on the trot with so many out, but Bennett said his team was well placed.

Under-strength Broncos’ teams – and as Bennett pointed out, younger teams than this one - have pulled surprises before during the Origin period.

“There has been a history of that and these players have the opportunity now,” he said.

“They look happy this morning. The team has had a couple of good wins and that helps the mood.

“It’s a different team and we might play a different way this week.

“But lots of them have been a part of the last couple of weeks, so they are confident and that is half the battle.”

The Broncos have come through a hard period off the field recently, topped with yesterday’s news international prop Petero Civoniceva had signed with Penrith.

But the Broncos have locked down nearly everyone they want to now, meaning the full focus of the ninth-placed club can be on qualifying for the finals.

“I am pleased Petero has got a club and he is happy with what he has done,” said Bennett.

“We are done (with signing players) now and I am relieved. Now we can get back to talking about football.”

Bennett pushed Greg Eastwood to the bench this morning, moving David Stagg to lock and giving centre Joel Moon his first starting berth in the NRL since round 10 against Manly.

Stagg (pictured) is having his first game back from three weeks out with a shoulder injury, while fullback Denan Kemp gets his second start in the NRL.

Brad Thorn will captain the Broncos for the second time in the match at Penrith’s CUA Stadium.
