...to play for the Chooks?

I'm 29, so the only guys I can comment on are Anthony Minichiello, Luke Phillips, & Ritchie Barnett, but let's hear from those old enough to (clearly) remember the likes of Rod Silva, Ian Schubert, etc. Who were our best no. 1's during your lifetime?

Also, someone older help me out. Is Ivan Cleary in this discussion, or did he only play centre for us?

I was born in 1975 so probably only recall from the mid/late 80s.

Mini has been the stand out and will be for years to come.

Luke Phillips was solid as a rock and as many will say, played one of the finest games a fullback could in the 2000 GF.

There's been some good ones over the years, unfortunately in the late 80's early 90's we had many.

Some that come to mind are Gary Wurth, David Seidenkamp, Rod Silva (has a step like RTS), Andrew Walker played a bit of FB and Amos Roberts was pretty good too in the mini injured years.

Sadly there were a lot that I've forgotten about but mini had been there for the last 12.

I feel guilty for saying it but Minichiello has eclipsed him as my favourite fullback after all these years & the class & dignity he has shown through the hardships, both personal & club-wide. He is our Steve Menzies IMO.

That said, God damn do I love Luke Phillips to bits. His defence was just mesmerisingly beautiful to watch. My favourite tackle is his bone-breaker on Sean Rudder during the classic GF Qualifier vs the Knights in 2000. Andrew Johns breaks the line with a chip & chase & Phillips is left two on one --- he leaves Johns early to take the supporting Rudder & dead set murders him to stop a certain try (the game was in the balance at that point).

"This is a man Luke Phillips who is playing with pain-killing injections, he injured his ribs last week...that is the tackle of the season." - Phil Gould

"He has him him with one of the best tackles we've seen all year. He took the perilous odds of leaving Andrew Johns early, he took the support player, & he clobbered him." - Peter Sterling.

The last of the great cover tackle artists?

Mini is the best we've ever had.

Loved Rod Silva on his day and another favorite was Gary Wurth...very classy player.

You're a shit troll

That would be cos I'm not a troll dumbass, & you're your choice of a hopeless judge of talent or a slave to the pitiful trend of Anasta-bashing.

It really gets my goad when I see losers character assassinate Anasta, the guy had so many games where he tried his guts out (both successfully & unsuccessfully) often when players around him stood by & embarressed us all as fans. They should have shot Brian Smith for the way he f@cked Anasta around during 2011-12, & where were you mate when he kicked that field goal which not only literally rescued our season, but also gave us arguably our single greatest team memory of this century outside of the 02 & 13 GFs? Celebrating like mad? Yeah...go to hell.

If I ever see an objective, reasoned argument against Anasta on this site I will check outdoors for signs of the apocalypse. Anasta being stuck in that dismal Tigers team was the hardest thing about winning this years GF. He deserved to be there.

I'll go a step further & say Minichiello (2003-05) is the best fullback not named Lockyer in the last 30 years.

Just for a laugh, let's see how many better 5-8s you can name between 2001-2010. I've got...

Lockyer
Thurston
Fittler

& arguably Barrett, Cronk, Campbell & Hill. Now you go...

Arguably Trent Barrett? Arguably? Barrett was quality and dominated Origin. MUCH better than Anasta.

Fittler
Lockyer
Thurston
Barrett
Marshall
Hill

Foran and Maloney are currently better than Anasta ever was.
