Goalkicking

Back in the Winfield Cup days, most of the great kickers where Kiwis, Ridge, Halligan, Eron Crossin, (at times) Gavin Hill (there's more but that's just off the top of my head) now there are none.

Even Halligan is coaching Trent Hodginson, whose coaching the Warriors?

Daryl Halligan is coaching Shaun as well. He coaches at a large amount of clubs.

Gavin Hill's percentage was only 66%.

SJ is ahead of both Hill and Crossin on percentages and fractionally ahead of Schuster.

Maybe if they weren't such a crap team, he might get a few more kicks from in front instead of the sidelines, improving his stats which the OP seems to base his opinion on rather than actual ability and promise of the guy, like Iafeta mentioned.

Forgive me for asking....but...should we only score tries under the posts?
Should we just forego tries further than 15m wide because our kicker has playmaker ability?

Nah..we should just be a less crap team

I will take a try as a try anytime, would be happy with a more confident kicker though.

I think Johnson has the potential to be another Cleary / Witt / Maloney level goal kicker actually. He has been off form so far this year, but I can only think of a couple of ones he really should have nailed - most of the rest are ones you would hope to get, but can't blame him for missing occasionally. Obviously he is missing them too much at the moment, but he has found some good form in the past.

I would stick with him for the time being, although you'd obviously have to hook him from goal kicking duties if his current success rate continues.

So you're saying its the players fault for not conveniently scoring in between the posts?
Sidelines tries make us a crap team? That argument is nuts. Look at our top try scorers over the years, its all Manu, Meli, Toopi scoring on the edges.

Last time I checked a goalkickers 'actual ability' is to put the ball between the posts, regardless of where the try was scored. Witt was regularly nailing them from the sidelines back in his day.

Whatever potential he may have, Johnson *right now* is kicking below par for an NRL goal kicker.

I agree... what I mean by potential is he's clearly a beginner who when he sorts out some slight technical works will be a fine kicker. I see similarities without a lot of blokes at the same stage of his kicking career.

I get that, but the bottom line is the "potential" tag applies to all aspects of Johnson (clearly I am a bit anti him now) - he's had a fair amount of first grade now, and talked a good game, and the media have sucked up to him a lot - looks from the outside that he's believed a lot of that BS - but that the end of the day he's delivered sweet f**k all, unless the opposition is completely screwed for one reason or another... as with many, big wraps, I assume big salary, but performance wise middle of the road for the NRL...

Week in week out we can only count on Mannering, Lillyman, Friend, Leuleaui and Rapira. (off topic a bit, but guess Johnson's goal kicking is symptomatic of more)

I think frankly we underestimate the step up from NYC. SJs biggest halves opponents from NYC were Reynolds and Beau Henry. That's right, Beau who? I also think the attitude of Cappy will do wonders for SJ, and just as importantly for a running half, the players around him. I think the a Warrior players preparation has been too easy for long. Thus some of these chaps don't mature like they should.
