Gold Coast decision anger Wests Tigers

This may have already been discussed, but what do you guys think about Wests and Balmain not being given a look in as the 16th team? Apparently they were promised that they would be allowd to separate again once the comp regained it's stability, but that won't happen it seems.
Personally I'm in two minds about this... I think the Gold Coast decision could be a good way to counter the scum of the South and their attempts to spread their desease (AFL) into our beloved Rugby League heartland, but on the other hand, both Wests and Balmain were forced into merging for their survival and really got treated pretty badly by the NRL... I'm inclined to think that somwhere down the track they deserve to be given a chance to exist as separate entities again.

The fact is that they would no longer exist if they didn't merge and would cease to exist in the future if they were to split up. Financially it's not possible for either to continue on as seperate entities.

So they can whinge all they want but it's stupid and futile for them to do so

if Wests and Balmain want to seperate and form their own identity in the NRL agian, they should be made to pay back the 12 million plus interest they rec'd from the NRL to form the Joint venture in the first place.

plain and simple.

Gladly - so longas we are given back the 6 years we've been forced out of the comp. Epod

I think thats a little simplistic... It's not exactly like they had a choice was it? It would never have been necessary if it wasn't for the Super League either... Lots of fans were alienated by the merge, one mate of mine in particular was a die hard wests supporter, and after the merge he completely stopped watching Rugby League! He now watches the Super 12 and Wallabies matches almost exclusively! Before the merge he was completely uninterested in union!

Mo one forced Wests to merge with Balmain. Balmain wre given an ultimatum but Werst did it without being pushed.

The fact still remains that the Super League was to blame, and clubs like wests and Balmain, who had been in the comp forever, were made to pay for the greed of the TV dollar... Maybe they'll never get back togeather, but there's no denying alot of clubs were heavily short changed in this era, and in some ways I really think now that the NRL is stronger than ever, they really ought to start undoing some of these past wrongs...

Why is the NRL stronger then ever? Ask yourself that? It is not stronger because clubs like Balmain, Western Suburbs and Norths are still in the competition.

Why, if it is so strong, should we go back to an era that brought the game down on it's knees?

The game was stronger than ever in the early 90's aswell, and teams like Balmain and Wests were apart of the comp then weren't they? The point is that the ARL were trying to grow the game slowly in that era and it was working well! The Super League just plonked teams every where and watered down the comp! That is what brought the game to it's knee's mate, not corner stone clubs like Balmain, Norths or Wests!

Who really cares what the Wests Tiger think. Without the merger, they'd both be rivalling the Knights & Bunnies for the wooden spoon.

If they are gonna cry about GC's inclusion and take the NRL to court, the NRL should split them up and give them an ultimatum "Get a top 12 finish or f**k off to Premier League".

If they were to be split up back to their sh*tty former selves, both the Tigers & Magpies will probably be back in court. But this time, it'll be to file for bankruptcy.

Cry me a river Tigers & Magpies fans....

And having a sh*tload of teams in the Sydney area is really gonna help the game, isn't it.

I'd be interested to see Wests and the Tigers reaction if the NRL gave them the nod to part ways again. I reckon they'd sh*t themselves, because neither would be able to sustain a team on their own. Souths would look like Rugby League giants compared to them if they were to split. The writing for Wests was on the wall in the early 80's when they had to go to court to stay in the NSWRL. I'm pretty sure they struggled ever since both on and off the field.

I have a better idea. Make this a National Rugby League and set up a Perth team and f**k the Warriors off. Not a brilliant financial organisation, crowds bordering on pitiful for a one nation team. BTW how close were the warriors to being bankrupt if the constant grants were not forthcoming from the NRL

? ..... That they don't necessarily have to come back as sydney based teams.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. It would be a very logical solution. It may upset the die hards, but then again, if die hards learnt how to build bridges, then there wouldn't be a problem.
