I heard a rumour around the traps that the Gold Coast have dropped the Dolphin.

Any further details?

Either way GCRLFC 4 LIFE.

so do Miami get to keep the name Dolphins, or have Redcliffe had a dig at them as well

I thought it was already said that the Dolphins were dropping the name, because Redcliffe claimed it (they believe they are a chance at becoming an NRL team down the line)

LOL and while we're at it the NQ. Cowboys can sue Dallas the Cronulla Sharks can sue the San Jose Sharks (NHL), The Brisbane Broncos can sue the Denver Broncos (NFL), The Penrith Panthers can sue the Jacksonville Panthers (NFL if they are still around)

I'm sure I'd be able to find others.

Obviously the only reason they relented is at the good graces of the Gold Coast bid.

They saved Redcliffe a lot of money they'd have wasted on legel fees.

I had better see the Sunshine Coast Dolphins in the NRL in 10 years.

Or all of this is for nothing.

Even if the Redcliffe Dolphins never become an NRL team, the Gold Coast bid were stealing there identity. I can really see where they were coming from. They've been around for so long, and the Dolphin name regarding Rugby League in Queensland has always been associated with Redcliffe.

The NRL is not the be all and end all of rugby league.

Dream on that the Gold Coast have done the nice thing. They dropped it because they knew we'd NEVER give up. Arrogant arseholes got what they deserved.

Gold Coast weren't trying to steal their identity.

With or without Redcliffe ever existing, I severely doubt it would benefit or hinder the Gold Coast bid.

If you asked the overwhelming majority of people what geopgraphic location in Queensland they think of when they hear the word Dolphin, I bet you anything they wont say Redcliffe!!!

Most people are ignorant of the Redcliffe Dolphins and have the ability of seeing the difference between two clubs with the same mascot but with different colours, jerseys, different geographic location and mascot design playing in separate competitions.

No one is going to be hoodwinked into thinking "Hey Redcliffe are in the NRL now...." and then go to a game and say "Hey...wait a second! This isn't Redcliffe!"

If Redcliffe don't make moves for joining the NRL it is all for nothing.

Sunshine Coast need a team in the long term future, Sunshine Coast Dolphins?

Better f**king be!

Most people are ignorant of the Redcliffe Dolphins

So your saying most people who follow Rugby League in Qld particulary South East Qld would be unaware of who Redcliffe are.

Believe it or not there was quite a competition up here before 1988 when the the then ARL expanded and players not only from Redcliffe but Brothers, Wynnum, Valleys, Easts, Wests, Norths,Ipswich were very well known and household names along with the clubs.

I know it's all changed now and the competition doesn't much recognition but I still think people would be aware of who the Clubs are.

You may be too young to remember this Diehard I don't know.

If you want a real laugh.

The clowns running Redcliffe neglected to trademark "REDCLIFFE DOLPHINS" until last year.

Leave trying to trademark the DOLPHIN alone. That is a different ball game.

Redcliffe Leagues wasn't trademarked until March 16th 2005.

Redcliffe Leagues Club a club that turns over like $25 million a year can't afford $800 to trademark their name or pay someone to be smart enough to think of doing it. (Obviously someone from the 'other' side of the Hornibrook Bridge.)

Where did the Redcliffe administration get their qualifications? Off a back of a cereal box? Even I trademarked several of my own projects!

I wonder what sort of lawyers they had lined up. Hmmm....

Lionel Hutz?

I wonder if they could have mounted a legal assault as well as they run their business.

Believe me I know there was a competition and still is a competition up here. And I love it.

But the reality is, not very many people know of the Redcliffe Dolphins existance and an even more frightening fact is that the vast minority of rugby league fans are also ignorant.

I want nothing more than to turn back time and merge the best of the BRL and NSWRL. Just adding the GC and Brisbane was in my opinion a massive mistake.

I want greater Queensland representation in the NRL.

My official position on the matter is that I wanted the Gold Coast Gladiators because I always wanted to have Redcliffe as part of the NRL. But they never signalled their intentions. And when the Gold Coast declared they would be using the Dolphin, that shipped sailed for me.

I always wanted the Sunshine Coast Dolphins in the NRL. And if they eventually, in ten or fifteen years become part of the NRL representing the Sunshine Coast, based at Redcliffe. Even just to signal such intentions and make moves to achieve that goal. You wont ever hear a whimper of complaint from me.

If this kicks Redcliffe into seeking NRL representation, than I will be a happy chappy. Otherwise I don't think they had much of a case.

I agree with the Redcliffe Dolphins point of view. People who are mentioning US sports teams with the same name as NRL teams are way off the track. This is a unique situation in which there could have been 2 teams in the same sport in the same state with the same name. What would happen in the future if the Redcliffe gained admission to the NRL and the Goal Coast Dolphins were already there? Would they have to change their name that they have had for decades?

Wynnum Seagulls and Tweed Heads Seagulls both play in the Queensland Cup.

I agree, I always wanted the Redcliffe Dolphins in the NRL. But seriously there was no news of any intention to make moves. Even if they announced they were targeting 15 years in the future, that single announcement would have effectively put a bullet in the tyres of any upstart.

It doesn't take a genius to draw the conclusion that some time in the future an NRL team would take on the Dolphin tag. Hell it could have been Adelaide, New Zealand or Perth. What then?

They should have pre-empted this!! And they should have trademarked their own name. I clarify I am not talking about "Dolphins" but "Redcliffe Dolphins".

An example of being forced to change names when a strong state team moves to the national competition can be seen with the AFL and Port Adelaide Magpies, a strong and successful SAFL club. Which moved up to the AFL but because Collingwood was already the Magpies they changed to POWER.

I didn't and never wanted this to happen to Redcliffe, but if they aren't interested in the NRL. What can you do...

I had better go do some work.

I will sum up for now.

- If I was in charge of the Gold Coast RLFC believe me we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

- I always wanted the Sunshine Coast/Redcliffe Dolphins and Gold Coast in my dream NRL.

- I will respect the resolution completely.

- I will be extremely happy if Redcliffe signal intentions for the NRL.

- I am glad the Gold Coast ultimately weighed up the pros and cons. The ability to listen to people is a virtue. Maybe everyone will be overall happier, on both sides of the fence.

- I pray we don't get a gay logo. I'm a fan of Titans or Gladiators. Pirates might be OK...

- North Sydney fans have one less thing to bitch about. Cha-ching!!!

The Brisbane Broncos & Denver Broncos are sister teams.

Some Denver Broncos ppl go to the Brisbane Broncos club ever few years to look around & go to games.

And Brisbane Broncos officials go over there to check things out.
