Gold Coast Titans,a disgrace

It makes me so happy to see the Titans now struggling and on the verge of extinction. After picking a star studded squad initially,it was no wonder they were going to be fairly successfull on the park. However ,surely they must have been stretching the salary cap by keeping the squad together whilst adding top players eg Mat Rogers and Greg Bird etc each season.
Not to mention their off season purchases and now their pursuit of Cooper Cronk, they are treating the NRL and us supporters with contempt.
They can wither away as far as i am concerned.(wonder if they have paid off Scott Prince's house yet).

Amazing players are even talking to them. Why would you go there? I would be going through the contract making sure I got paid given their financial position. Still, it seems the Nrl will keep propping them up just like the sharks

What I fine most bizarre about the whole debacle is how Searle consistently denies the club is in dire straits. It’s a shame though that they could not manage their affairs better as I think it’s an important part of the world for rugby league to be in.

I remember Gus Gould talking up the Centre of Excellence and the Titans as the future of rugby league. Now look at them, visiting PNG cap in hand whilst Gallop and co decide what to do with them. Give me Jubilee and the Taj any day over that mess.

I think it is important for Rugby League in Qld that they survive. The AFL is nipping at their heels big time and keeping our game alive on the gold coast has to be a priority for the NRL.

Yep it would be a real waste to lose them.. its a good area for rugby league and so much work has already gone into the franchise.

Cant just keep cutting the new expansion clubs.. but 30million.. ouch.

It's very good for the Gold Coast and the league in general. Brings a lot of money into the GC and keeps a strong league presence in the area.

GC is a rugby league town but it will soon whither and make way for AFL if the Titans fold.

Plus, how many here want to see the Broncos with a stonger hold on SE Qld juniors?

Perhaps another location in SE QLD would be better off?? This will be 5 times unlucky for the Gold Coast...it just does not work in that city. It's a transient city - or more accurately a town. The limited amount of people who DO put there roots down up there commonly follow other clubs. It does not seem to capture a populous that's interested. You can have all the acadamys, centres and business models you like - Titans have been boosting there corwd figures from day 1. Maybe a "south brisbane" team would be more the ticket.

It will be tragic if they fold, for all reasons above. If I think the NRL will make sure they don't as well.

Why wouldn't you go there? They pay overs for everything, on & off the field.

But if the club pays overs, the overall success of the club will suffer, so I guess as a player it depends what your driver is.

It is tough but yes definately a 2nd team is essential for Brisbane, the broncos have had it good for so long. The Cowboys have support from wider areas from Townsville so another Brisbane team can attract support outside of Brisbane as well.

Yep they've paid overs for some ordinary players. Zillman getting a five year deal was also out there. When they first came into the comp though I thought they bought well with Prince, Bailey and Presto.

No way the NRL has the coin to bail them out. Best scenario is to wind them up and to transplant the squad to a newly formed entity on the Gold Coast. I cant imagine the QLD govt wanting skilled stadium to just rot too come to think of it.

The Titan's administration and owner are to blame for the mess. Don't know what they thought would happen.

Word is that Palmer who just lost the lic. for the Gold Coast soccer team will by the center of excellence and make it available to all codes. He may consider buying the Gold Coast Rugby League lic. after the club goes into administration and keeping hold of most of the players. Of coures with his own administration.

Hope it happens that way because the Gold Coast is a great place, has a large population and good facilities. Ideal for supporting a Rugby League Club. The new owners just have to sensible with their spending and probably need some startup assistance from the NRL in the frst two years.

Agree it is a retirement or holiday destination rather than a rugby league nursery.

Even the name 'Gold Coast' conjures up images of sandy beaches, schoolies weeks and meter maids in cowboy hats.. Not a football team.

What about reviving the South Queensland Crushers?

This is the third time they have tried to get a GC side to work and another failure. Put in a south east Qld side to replace them then expand with the Central Coast and a West Australian team.

I used to hate the Titans when they first came in, especially because I lived on the coast at the time, but after seeing them crash back to earth last season, I feel sorry for them in a way.

I would love to see them win a Premiership and build crowd numbers to stick it up the AFL.

Also thinking of getting a season ticket if I move back to the coast (because live footy is great!)

Given the NRL's conservative approach to expansion it's amazing that GC have gotten themselves into such a mess so early!? What the hell was in their strategic plan and how did it go to shit so early?

Would this have happened on the Central Coast had they been given the license?
