Gold Coast United to Fold?

I am pretty sure the A-league needs to expand to at least 12 to fit in with FIFA's rules and eventually have at least a 2tier comp with a promotion/relegation system in place (Not sure on the time frame though).

This won't happen unless we win the WC bid but even then there isn't the following for the product for that process to survive.

Soccer is in dire straights atm and the roar and fury won't last much longer either by the looks of it.

What is it with Skilled Park? The rent there must be rediculous. The Titans have very expensive memberships/tickets, and have seen attendences drop.

Gold Cost United couldn't afford to open most of the ground for half their games last year.

The Gold Coast has a very fickle sporting landscape, I mean how long has it taken to establish a RL club there? sure, playing out of the Tweed and not financing the joint didn't help, but it is a very tough market to crack.

I can only imagine what the AFL are going to get, and their big white elephant stadium might be even worse than Skilled Park. Sure, plenty of Victorians living there to get numbers, but we will see. Union talked about a side there too didn't they?

 They closed all bar one stand for one game this year before public outrage forced their hand to re-open it. Half their games?

Smoke/fire

I can't imagine a guy pumping in millions every year to get crowds of 5k......I'm surprised Con has hung around so long for the jets. GCU have just not captured the locals interest

Holy sh*t. I've always said that I think the A league was doomed to fail if expanded past the 10 teams...it will end up like the nsl

I don't think that's accurate at all. Expansion is viable, it just needs to be done into footballing areas that neighbor non footballing areas. The Gold Coast was never a good idea for an A-League team, and Townsville's proving only slightly better. Why the A-League persists with expanding into glamorous areas rather than into footballing strongholds like Canberra and Wollongong is beyond me.

I hear Archie Frasier has stepped down as A-League supremo. I can't say I'm horrified.

Funny thing about the A-League is that one of it's smallest clubs is arguably the most viable - that being the Mariners.

the mariners never pretended to be bigger and better than what they are. they seemed to have known their limitations and played within those boundaries.

they did have some nice fortune in that they are not competing against another code for local status, but in saying that they have been active in involving themselves with the community rather than expecting them to come to them.

Melbourne don't need to sell out a stadium every week. The Broncos don't manage to sell out every week, but I'd wager most everybody would agree a second Brisbane team would be a good thing - except maybe Broncos fans.

By having two Melbourne teams, the FFA are guaranteeing a crowd in Melbourne every round rather than every other round - not to mention the numbers they should draw for a derby.
