Golden Point in Super League

Why isn't Golden Point being utilised for drawn matches in the Super League? It'd make games more interesting, like it has with the NRL.

Because we realise that sometimes a team deserves something out of a game. After a tense eighty minutes when the scoreboard can't separate the teams then maybe, just maybe they both deserve to walk away with a point rather than playing extra time and possibly losing due to the whim of a referee or the bounce of the ball.

It's a horrible idea. Thank god it's never been tried over here, and it never will. I was tempted to lock the thread at first, it's that bad an idea.

we are gonna fall out over this mate but thats aload of big fat hairy bollocks...........

after watching the newcastle v manly game at the weekend i touted the "golden point for ESL" on RLFANS.....and was promtly shot down...but they know nothing...

but maybe it's the aussies attitude of "winnner takes all" that gives then an advantage over us...maybe thats why they won the 2003 ashes 3-0 instead of losing it 3-0

surely if a team can come back from 20-0 to tie 20-20 they, and the other team, deserve an extra 10 mins to decide it??

bring in the golden point in ASAP........

You're right spud. We are gonna fall out over this ;-) . It's a contrived idea that. If a team comes back from 20 points down and then they lose because the ref decides a player was 2cms offside then that just brings the game into disrepute. If they get back they deserve a point not the chance to lose the game. If a team is dumb /unlucky enough to lose a big lead then why should they have the opportunity to go on and win the match? Will/do we get the situation where a team, instead of going for a win plays out their tackles in the hope of regrouping for a better chance in "extra time". We would never have had that fantastic try from Chris Joynt under these circumstances. Saints would have taken the tackle and gone for glory in the added time. How do the tv companies build golden point time into their schedules? Do they automatically add on an extra half an hour to accomodate "possible" extra time or do they take a chance and disrupt the rest of the schedules?

Never ever ever, great idea for a winner takes all cup game, but a draw is a draw under 80 mins in regular season.

plus how much strain are you looking to put our poor hearts under spud?

There are some regular league games where no team deserves to go away empty handed just for the sake of some extra "drama". Agree with marv, it's ok for settling a cup tie but only after normal extra time has failed to find a winner.

A bounce of the ball or a ref's decision can decide a game in 80 minutes? I dont see the difference.

Its the same when people say that the golden point can be a field goal marathon, so can the last 10 minutes of a game. There is no difference.

Rugby league is about winners and losers, i remember when we had draws over here and i can tell you no one felt like a winner. Both supporters were pretty dead after the game. The only time when a team comes away happy with a draw is when they are last and they play first and no one expects them to get within 20 points of them.

The difference is that obviously the decisions mentioned haven't separated the two sides over eighty minutes so why should there be an extra period of play until one or other of the teams score? How would you feel if the Eels not only lost a lead to some dodgy decisions/ bad luck but then went on to lose the game in overtime due to more of the same? I don't imagine for one minute that you sit there and say how thoroughly deserved the winners were. You'd be kicking the nearest cat. What about the scenario whereby a team's whole season can rest on winning/or losing games in overtime that they otherwise wouldn't have won or lost? Again I bet you wouldn't sit there, if after the Eels have missed out on the playoffs because they didn't get a point from a draw that they otherwise would have done, and applaud the winners. For me the golden point is a very American thing. Just like in the '70's when they messed around with soccer rules and had the "shootout" after a drawn ninety minutes. Sometimes games are very even. Why can't that just be allowed to happen?

Parramatta fans have lived with cat-kicking, season-ending heartache for a long time now and none of it has had anything to do with golden point extra-time. We've just not had what it takes to go the whole way in the last 21 years.

Driving home last night Wok and Morrow were speculating on the ABC that perhaps we should have "golden try" which would lead to some pretty creative play unlike the grind upfield to position for the field goal.

A golden try would be a better option but how would the tv companies cope if a game went on for an extra forty five mins or more. Not too likely but a possible situation.

The first golden point game in the NRL involved us vs the Manly and we got robbed and i still loved it.

Yeah, I do concur with Cumberlandashes81. Although I love Golden Point, Golden Try would be a lot better and fairer, as a team would actually have to work and score a try to win the game. A bit of individual or team brilliance would be required to see who wanted the game the most.

Golden Try would still be rubbish. If two teams have scored the same number of points over 80 minutes then they both deserve a share of the reward. It's not fair on players who have put in effort for 80 minutes to cancel out the other team only for it to be snatched away from them in a minute or two of 'golden point'. As frustrating as it may be at times, a draw is a draw. Leave it at that.

As said before, Golden Point is a great idea for knockout Cup games, something you don't have in Australia so probably can't appreciate. For league games, there is no problem with a draw.

golden point? (excuse me for my ignorance)

What exactly is this? Is it just when a team late in the game (or half) takes a drop goal from open play, earning 1 point (in RL)?...

You can not take drop goals in European Rugby League? Sorry if this sounds stupid, but my only RL exposure is from the southern hemisphere (NRL and State of Origin...), it is the only thing on TV in the states, or at least, it used to be on TV... now we get bloody nothing!!!>?JP@IE$U*)@(&_)!@()!)(#&!)

Golden point in American parlance would be sudden death overtime, first team to score wins!

Yes we have drop goals (field goals to our Antipodean friends) in the ESL just like they have them in the NRL. A golden point is the first score in sudden death overtime after a drawn eighty minutes. It doesn't HAVE to be a drop goal it could also be a try or a penalty. We in the ESL have good old fashioned draws. Each team gets one point each on the league table.

thanks for the clarification in Seppoish:sarcasm:

Though I hate draws (seems like both loose), they really are a more accurate portrayal of the results of the match.

Though I can't see it being done in Rugby (either code) I do like the way they have been handling ties in college football (gridiron) in the states for the last 4-5 years.

They place the ball at the 25 yard line, and team A gets a shot. No clock, just yard marker, and standard downs. They either score a touch down, or attempt a field goal on 4th down. Then team B gets the ball at the same 25 yard line, on the same side of the field. They get the same opportunity. If the results are tied, they switch endzones, and try again...

So if team A "settle for a field goal", team B can
win it with a touch down,
put it to another OT with a field goal
loose it by not scoring at all...

If after 3 OTs it is still tied, teams scoring touchdowns must "go for 2", instead of kicking the giveme 1 pt converstion....

I honestly can't believe how some people don't like golden point.

A nil-all draw = boring

The 10 minute golden point period = the most exciting 10 minutes you will see in RL.

EVERY hit up can make or break the game. EVERY tackle, every kick. I'm on the edge of my seat.

If I'm doing something else and not watching the entire game live... and someone tells me the game is going into golden point im running straight to the TV to watch.
