Golden Point Suggestion

My suggestion to improve Golden Point. To encourage more tries without allowing teams to give away penalty after penalty without the threat of a penalty goal, I would change the rule so that a MISSED field goal or penalty goal lost you the match. This would allow teams only one shot at it, and make them set up a good one rather than aerial ping pong. It would also encourage them to go for a try.

Golden try wouldn't work imo because if you take away the threat of the penalty goal teams wont care about leaking penalties in defence to stop a try which would become a farce.

My personal preference is the draw - but I don't think they will return to it.

Any thoughts?

What about ten minutes extra time. A try wins the game, you cannot end the game with a drop goal. But the twist is an extra time points scoring system. For example charge downs of a drop goal attempt are worth 1 point and forcing a line dropout is worth 1 point. Just an idea.

No need for dramatic changes to the rules of the sport. People seem to be in favour of golden try, so if you score a try the game ends but you can otherwise still kick field goals or penalty goals until the 10 minutes of extra time is up.

A penalty awarded to the opposition from the spot where a missed field goal shot took place would be a better tweak.

Which essentially the old extra time rule which i fully agree.

Play 10 extra mins. Game ends after those 10 mins, not when someone scores.

Extra time should only be for finals matches. The only way that extra time should be used in regular season is if we make a win worth 3 points and split an extra time match 2-1. Extra time should also have no golden anything, like MU said.

Not for part A, a little based on an uninformed opinion for Part B and the cynic in me says mostly for Part C.

The NRL at the time said it would make games more exciting, as it would bring a bit of the finals experience in hard fought close matches to the regular season schedule and would help better determine the better teams by all but eliminating draws

Most coaches, clubs, players and fans had no preference and never really had an issue with draws. As it turns out, we still get draws, so the purpose of it is somewhat murky nowadays.

I hate the current system. Makes our game look sloppy and unskilled with all the field goal attempts. I have no issue with the extra time idea either. A return to the draw is my first preference. I just wish they would get rid of this current system.

I hate Golden point with a passion.
Our game turns into a sloppy style of union and the rules seem to go out the window.

Watch how offside the defence on the 5th tackle. Its a blight on the 80 mins I spent watching a good, tight game.

Golden point should be dropped all-together. Normal season games should just end in a draw if you can't get a winner in the 80. Players, fans, coaches are always talking about how tough and long the season is already and you can see teams that have to play that extra 10 mins are invariably flat the next week. This is especially evident when there is a short turn-around (eg. Monday night game then 4 days later on Friday).

During the finals when you need one team to win outright you can have golden point. Make it only on a try or a penalty if you like, but I personally don't mind if it's via field goal.

As an alternative for finals games, you could just play an extra 10 without golden point then another 10 in golden point if there is no winner. Another option would be to have the teams play a rematch a week later like in AFL (though this is hugely problematic with our finals system and scheduling).

edit - competition points for games could also use tweaking. I am partial to the way Super Rugby is worked out. It uses 4 points a win, 2 a draw, 1 bonus point for losing by less than 7 (make it <5 for league) and 1 bonus point for scoring 4 or more tries (make it 5 tries). I feel like it rewards teams better for the effort they display. In the current system a team that loses by a field goal in golden point gets the same as a team that gets beat by 50.

Golden point ? the winning team gets 2pts the loser 1point,at least its some reward for the effort put in by the losing team as the current system gives them squat.
