Goodbye Gus? Phil Gould to depart Penrith

I think this is over stated a bit.
Eg:
He plays a big part in ref blaming, which is horrible for the NRL.
He basically sank the Auckland Nines with his negative articles the year it folded.
He was a big advocate for the starting of the National under 20s then death rode it.

In terms of his standing as a coach he got lucky for NSW and basically Fittler and Johns made his career.

Gus would be a disaster as head of the game.
When people say that the bloke knows his footy, MOST people mean he knows how to coach, recruit, develop, and run a football club.

Running a football club is not running the game. Gus is not the man to take Rugby League to the next stage of its future.
His ideas for anything outside the boundaries of the field are self-interested and backwards looking, at a time when the game needs ambition and selfless vision.

I've still got a lot of time for Gus's thoughts on playing, coaching, and rules of the sport - but not for his future of the sport.

Gould has 3 main qualities
- Ability to blame others regardless who is at fault
- Ability to take credit for things he has nothing to do with
- 20/20 hindsite, says remarkable things after the event of after some else has already said it

but his true super power is death riding the game. It isn't constructive criticism or visionary. Its nothing more than dragging the game down and increasing the negativity about RL. No other sport has it like this and its terrible

Its all about Gould isn't it. when things don't work he bolts. When success is achieved afterwards he claims credit. I don;t think he had Bennett lined up at all.
The way he undermined Murray then even Stuart at the end because they were doing what he could not at Easts was disgusting

Its a good thing for Penrth and a better thing for RL when he leaves the game altogether

Undermined Murray and Stuart at the Roosters?! ROFLMAO. He was not even involved with the Roosters when Murray was coaching there. Fact is some of the players fell out with Murray about things on the field, and the jeckyll and hyde type performances on field didn't help his cause, especially in 2001. We could win one week by around 20 points, then lose the next week by a similar margin. My club has a hard nosed board.

As to Ricky, he undermined himself. Gus left the Roosters years before Stuart did. Stuart's problem was not using his interchange properly (e.g. 2003 Grand Final, Ned Catic played a whole 7 minutes), he rarely blooded any youngsters, and he never adequately filled wholes in the side when players left or retired (e.g. Jason Cayless and Brad Fittler). Fact is Ricky got full control, including over recruitment and retention, which is why Arthur Beetson walked out of the club when he did. Stuart stuffed the club up and left it in a mess.

Gould did a lot to promote SoO in the media while he was a coach of NSW. In comparison to Bennett who has never thought it necessary to use the coaching position to promote a game.
If Gould was good for the game in any way before his ego exploded all over leagues face it was this.
NRL coaches are horrible at using the media and promoting their clubs and the game generally.
Gould saw the importance of this but he went nuts.

Like most rugby league people, great operations manager but not so when it comes to management.

And why not at least give him a chance to see how he would fare?

<snip>That is my understanding of it. O"Neill had been talking to Ivan because he wanted to bring him in for 2019 but there was absolutely no reason for that to be pushed forward mid-season. Certainly Cleary did not have to start asking Wests for a release at that early stage as was suggested.

This is not what Penrith cub and fans have been saying for near 12 months. Cleary was under contract to the Tigers for another 2 seasons. It is of course the truth.

Speaks volumes of Cleary & O'Neill. Never thought that Gould would be the one to come out of this as the one with honour.

Can you give examples?

I think Gould is getting a rough go here.

I know we all laugh about the 5 year plan and all that but the fact is Penrith have made the finals 4 out of the last 5 years, has this ever happened before? Certainly it hasn't in the NRL era.

I don't think it can be argued that he hasn't met his KPIs as an operations manager.

You could make the same argument for giving Anthony Mundine a go as the games CEO. Why not just see how it goes.
No you couldn't make the same argument. Mundine is as backward as they come. He isn't in the same universe as Gould, and you or me.

Good point. Can someone start a small thread on how overrated Ricky Stuart is as a coach ffs! Long overdue.

It reminds me of his comments when he was being abused on Twitter about the Cleary fiasco and he said it will all come to light eventually.

First the story that he wanted Bennett and O'Neill instead chose his mate and now he has quit/been pushed.

Maybe he indeed had f**k all to do with it.

What has Parra's new stadium got to do with any of this and why do you think the Roosters have graced its surface to date? Are you all there mate?
John, Because you replied at midnight, I'll go easy on you.
Read my message that you quoted, and then tell me where I mention Parra or any new stadium.
I did mention ground in " worship the ground they walk on"
I hope you are "all there" enough not to be confused by that.
But yes, Parra did play well at the new stadium.
