What does it matter that Hodges "only" played centre for the roosters? He only played centre for the Broncos as well FFS.

Because that's the reason why Hodges joined the Roosters. He wasn't going to get a spot over the Test fullback, the Roosters said he'd play fullback for them (which is where he was carving up in QCup) and it enticed him to sign down there.

Now there could be more to the story but that's the one Hodges has stuck with for 14 years.

As for 2004, you had bigger problems than Hodgo.

Hodges was just a whinging dog and Bennett got in his ear by illegally negotiating his return when Hodges took himself on a couple weeks unplanned holiday at the start of 2004.

Hodges never should have played a game for the Roosters after that, and the NRL should have stepped in and voided any contract that the Broncos attempted to put forth for Hodges to come back to them for negotiating with a still contracted player.

If Hodges had been dropped for the 2004 grand final like Stuart had wanted (Gould gazumped him) then who knows how that game would have panned out. There wouldn't have been some hung over jackass daring Mason to run at him all game for a start (Mason made 300m running at said hung over jackass and won the CC medal)

Take that useless merkin Chris Walker with him too

It was actually during the World 7's at the start of 2004. Hodges joined up with the Bronco's players at a drinking session in Sydney. Bennett got in his ear at that time to come home.

I thought he just did the runner on training for a couple weeks because he was feeling "depressed" or "homesick" or some garbage and pissed off to brisbane to be with family/negotiate a deal?

Minor premiers, and went in at halftime of the grand final up 7 points. Yep, we had massive problems that year

Hodges was on the piss at the races the day before, which the club found out about, and Stuart wanted him dropped. Gould was having none of it as Hodges was one of his man-boner specials. Hodges then proceeded to get steamrolled all game by Mason, and let in 2 tries down his edge by rushing out of the line and leaving Walker stranded to mark 2 men.

Flannery starting centre that game and we win it.

If he was truly so slighted about not playing fullback it seems odd that he was completely fine with it at the broncos all these years? Mini was also earmarked as a fullback replacement for us for ages. a selection that in retrospect proved a pretty bloody awesome choice given he turned out to be the best fullback to ever play for the club.

Not that year, but in that grand final you sure did.

I never said he was slighted, I said that was apart of the initial negotiations with the Roosters and one of the big motivating factors, or so he claims.

In the end, he settled into centre, got 26 starts and had a very good team around him.

But then things turned sour for him after the Sandcorp fiasco and he needed a change of scenery. Beggers can't be choosers and for a time, he was easily the most unpopular signing the Broncos had made. A lot of people didn't want him back, Bennett stuck his neck out and won a premiership with him...at fullback...but that was never apart of the original negotiations.

It's a position he always wanted to go back to, but for one reason or another it never worked out.

I think Bennett prefers his players to have more than a remedial command of the English language.

It is an issue which hasn't been raised during negotiations with Fox Sports or the Nine Network.

LOL, have you never heard Josh McGuire talk?

It's nothing that sinister. My point is you can't blame a loss entirely on one player, especially when a side makes sixteen errors. Unless that individual player is responsible for all sixteen errors, clearly there must have been other issues on the night.

For mine, the biggest problem was the lack of strategy. The Roosters kept playing like it was dry weather football, constantly looking to run around the Bulldogs side instead of looking to turn them around and earn repeat sets. In the end, the Bulldogs dominated possession and by the time the Roosters got their shot in the second half, it was do or die and they struggled with the pressure.

I can sum up the Roosters 2004 Grand Final very succinctly "We saved our worst 40 minutes of the season for the second half". That was said directly to me back at Easts Leagues Club on the same night right after the Grand Final by Craig Wing. It summed up pretty much what every other player was saying that night.

I recall you getting hammered by the Bulldogs earlier that year, when Hodges was sent off for a high tackle on Price.

Sums up what a merkin he is

Tallis and hodges were both people that lacked principle and it caught up with them. It's called karma. Tallis sat out a year of a signed contract for st George to play for super league for Brisbane . Hodges played many a dirty league game and lost his last game as an nrl player in gf . It's karma for lacking principles fellas . Bennet lost this one bit will be back . The other aforementioned two go
Out in my eyes as being "dog " players.

Yeah right. I wish I had Hodge's bad karma. Two GF victories. Nine SOO series wins and countless Test victories. Stop speaking out of your frontal lobotomy!

Never understood how he seems to be some sort of moral compass despite him refusing to play for the dragons when he had a contract. Wanker and hypocrite of the highest order.

And yes the story is he used his position on the NQ board to block them signing Bennett for 2009.

This isn't just for you but others as well.
Tallis sat out a season because he refused to sit on the bench for another season under Brian Smith. As for Bennett, Tallis hates Bennett because when Big Gordie and others were being convinced to stay at Brissy on $200k/season, Bennett was receiving millions from the Thoroughbreds!

OK fair enough - yeah think you're spot on and it's how I've always remembered it.

Still scars me to this day that game. It was an absolutely shocking second half by us. Just handed a comp over.
