The thing that peeves me is that it has been the Craig Gower show at Penrith for the past couple of years. He virtually gets what he wants, when he wants, and gets what players he wants at the club. Now when the team needs him the most. He bails out. I'd be surprised if Penrith win another game this season now.

I don't know about that. He's still a competitor, he won't be happy leaving the club with a spoon.

There's also a possiblity that Gowie might be leaving the club for the same reasons we are disappointed with the club management. Food for thought...

He hasnt been at his best this year and some say he is in the midst of a slow but marked decline.

If thats true, theres still Joey Williams available to replace him and you can also pick up Webb from us.

But maybe this clean-out is the right thing for the club. The club's table position suggests so anyway.

So I'm thinking positively about change and the need to embrace it.

Theres a few others that need their marching orders too Im afraid.

Gower has been given an conditional early release *.

http://www.panthers.com.au/default.aspx?id=3&ArticleID=493

Jun 26 - Penrith management has agreed in principle to release Craig Gower from the final two years of his contract.
He would remain with the club until the end of this season.
Because of Craig’s high profile, the request will be put to the Penrith Board at its regular meeting tomorrow.
Craig had a meeting with Head Coach Matthew Elliott yesterday and told him he wanted an early release. A formal request was made today by his manager, Greg Willett.
“We have reluctantly agreed in principle to Craig’s request because we believe that under the circumstances it is in his best interests to have a change,” said Panthers General Manager Rugby League, Michael Leary.
“Our decision was based on the great service that Craig has given our club. He has been with us since he was 14-years-old and is now ranked third (228) in the highest number of first grade games for Penrith.
“In making this decision, the club wishes Craig and Amanda the very best for the future,” Michael said. “We look forward to Craig finishing the year on a high note – and he is determined to do so.
“The club not only values Craig’s contribution on the field and in the community, we also want to maintain a friendship with one of our greatest-ever players."

Do you see CLINTON playing Premier League as he is no longer in the clubs plans for 2008 and beyond??? Tool:roll:

DON'T GET SO UPSET RHINO , WHAT ???? IT IS GOOD ENOUGH TO PUNT WALLACE TO PREMIER LEAGUE BUT NOT OTHERS.
VERY HYPOCRITICAL TO SAY IT FOR ONE PLAYER AND NOT THE OTHERS.
OBVIOUSLY ALL OF THEM ARE NOT IN THE CLUBS PLANS.

Wallace was dropped because of form (not playing to the coach's instructions was one reason) and because the coach was trying to get the team going forward. Only conspiracy theoryists, such as his manager, would believe otherwise.

what a f**king joke, I've got alot of respect for what craig has given this club.

I can understand his reasons for leaving.

But f**king fair dinkum if he shouldn't have come out and said this two months ago when there were still some chance of finding a top quality replacement.

Assuming Craig Gower has been playing as poorly as many supporters here and on PI have been proclaiming he has done the club a massive favour seeking a release from the remaining two years of his contract.

Some may argue he must have known this was coming and therefore informing the club earlier may have made it for the club to retain Peter Wallace. Whether Wallace would have been worth retaining is still open to debate and perhaps time will tell.

While I don't think Craig Gower was playing as poorly as has been suggested there is no doubt he was not playing anywhere near someone on a salary of $450K. Perhaps, in lieu of the Gower departure now would be a good time to offer releases to a few others such as Priddis and Rooney.

The departure of Gower and a few others really gives Matt Elliot to largely start afresh and I think this will benefit him and the team his wishes to develop.

Pretty lame.

He was going to be one of Penrith's great. But to leave in this manner when we really do need a leader sort of puts a sour note on it.

im laughing my arse off cos this exactly what i said was happening... how did i know? i knew cos our management has become transparent.. I knew they were lying about the talks this week about him leaving as i lost faith in the handling of media in our club long ago.

Now i will also say why i think Gower is going and why he waited til after Wallace was gone to make his mind up.....

I think Gower with all his hards years of passion for this club has finally had enough of its ill management as much as many of us have. Not much otherwise will lead me to believe any different.

He is sick of it, im sure he knows more then we do of the crap going on in there and that doubled with the media crap he has endured (and again the way the club handled things in relation to that aswell) and i think he has finally said stuff yas and wants out.
And who knows maybe he can have a giggle that he knows the clubs up the creek now that his gone after they offered Wallace nothing. Surely the players could see as well as us that not offering Wallace anything was a huge unjustice and costly mistake...esp now that Gower is gone too.. hahahaa

Good on you Craig.. all the best for your families future I hope you can live in more peace overseas and watch from afar as the club you love destroy themselves instead of being there and seeing it in your face. No wonder he has been out of form... who else could play at their best with all the mismanagement going on.. i know i dont work well in an environment that is not pleasing.

Such a shame he has to leave.. he was an icon to the Panthers and now he cant stand being there and wants out of his contract 2 years early.. thats got to show that some seriously bad stuff is going on at Mulgoa Rd.

I knew the place was going to self destruct when Matt Adamson walked back through the door.

Yes, good call very insightful.

The system doesnt lend itself to this type of pre-leaving disclosure. Maybe it should.

If its a moral decision of the player, then not enough of them care about the clubs.

Gower was richly rewarded by the Panthers on many levels. He was extremely well paid. They even supported his union stint last Xmas but the ARL blocked it. The backed him on the off-feild drama's too. He was 'spoilt' due to his obvious footballing gifts. He is not quite elite anymore, but close enough.

I am not an enemy of his, but its fair comment to say his conduct here is very dissapointing.

A number of possible recruits have been signed up elsewhere. Wing for example.

And it makes planning for next year more difficult and that disturbs Elliot and his team now because they need to blood players. That means team changes when the side is on the bottom already, further aggravating the supporters, sponsers etc.

The old firm is disintegrating into dust. This is a watershed year.

Whoose next?
