Wests Tigers' historic NRL grand final victory over North Queensland on Sunday night was the most watched television program of the year in Sydney and Brisbane.

Capping a record-breaking season for the league, the premiership decider attracted one of the largest ever television audiences for an NRL grand final.

More than 2.5 million Australians tuned in across Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

Sydney's average of 1.186 million viewers, which peaked at 1.267 million, was up 140,000 on last year.

The result was the highest audience since night-time grand finals were introduced in 2001 and could be the highest ever.

Brisbane delivered a strong result with an average of 778,370 viewers, up by more than 160,000 on 2004, and Melbourne also recorded an increase of 120,000 viewers, averaging 514,000 viewers this year.

The figures are yet to take into account the audience in the Cowboys' homeland of North Queensland which will be confirmed on Tuesday, and could add another 1.5 million viewers to the national total.

It's amazing that the audience is up 140k in Sydney over last year, considering it was an all Sydney grand final in '04. It's a testament to the progress made by the NRL in '05.

I think the increase was due more than anything else to the drop off in Australian Idol's ratings this year. Last year it rated almost 300,000 against the Grand Final. Last night it would have to have been less than 200,000.

melbourne ratings are great. Why isn't it live in Adelaide and Perth?

A: AFL Driven types who hate rugby league and happen to control channel nein

It was shown at 10:30 or so in Adelaide and Perth so they could still pull in reasonably good numbers last night.

AFL GF rated 342K in Brisbane. This means the NRL (778K) was more than double their audience here.

I'd say that had a lot to do with no queensland side playing in the grand final of AFL.

Just like the Swans being in the AFL grand final boosted Sydney's numbers. Last year's AFL grand final in Sydney rated in the 300k's, this year it averaged 991,000.

Imagine the Melbourne figures if the Storm made the grand final! They are already great numbers proving that people down there will watch rugby league.
