Match report from Greek RL site:

RUGBY League made its way to Athens when Greece held out a determined and much improved Serbia to win 44-26.

Greece played the game with no less than eight local-based players, with many of them playing only their second ever game of 13-a-side football.

The Greek Titans, captained by Michael Korkidas, looked set for an easy afternoon when they led 8-0 after just five minutes thanks to tries from Craig Moustakas and Kosta Kouparitsas before the Serbians replied with a try to prop-forward Zoran Pesic.

Winger Peter Vardis crossed for the Titans in the 16th minute but Serbia grabbed the lead with tries to lock-forward Soni Radovanovic and centre Nenad Matejic.

Another try from Vardis put Greece ahead 18-14 before Ivan Mitic leveled the scores with a try in the 35th minute. Anesti Karageorgiou, from the Rhodes club in Greece, showed great strength to score in the corner after lead up work from Ray Mavroudis and Michael Karageorgiou.

After being down 22-18 at the break, Serbia leveled the scores just five minutes into the second half when Nenad Grbic showed exceptional pace to score. The latter had the opportunity to put Serbia in front soon after but the final pass went to ground.

Vardis registered two tries in the space of five minutes to bring up a personal tally of four tries with his final effort coming off a majestic pass from Paul Salamakis. Both shots at goal went astray in the windy conditions but the Greeks were ahead on the scoreboard by 30-22.

The home side made sure of the win with two tries in three minutes from David Georgiou, who troubled the Serbian defence all day.

His second try saw British Super League referee give Serbian captain Radoslav Novakovic the red card for misconduct. The incident came when he was on the interchange bench.

A great run and pass from Serbian Greek Haris Dajc ? whose brother Dimitris was playing for Serbia - resulted in a try to Steve Spiliotopoulos in the 73rd minute.

Serbia, who have improved greatly in recent years, never gave up trying and finished the game with a consolation try to Radovanovic.

Kouparitsas was the man of the match, providing some damaging runs as well as some punishing defence. He was well supported by Georgiou, Spiliotopoulos, Mavroudis, Salamakis and Vardis.

The Karageorgiou brothers were the pick of the locals while Teo Divonis and Petros Petrou matched it with whatever Serbia could thrown at them.

The historic match came on top of the news that the first domestic match was staged three days earlier. Ten Australian-based Greek players linked up with 25 local players to witness the first Rugby League match played on Greek soil.

The Olympus Eels defeated the Attica Tigers 24-16 after leading 12-4 at the break. The Aussie players led the way in the first half, scoring four tries but it was the locals that took control of the second half to register all six tries.

A number of plans for the Greek Rugby League have been put into place with a regular domestic competition to commence in 2007.

Greece 44 (Peter Vardis 4, David Georgiou 2, Kosta Kouparitsas, Anesti Karageorgiou, Craig Moustakas, Steve Spiliotopoulos tries; Spiliotopoulos 2 goals)

Serbia 26 (Soni Radovanovic 2, Ivan Mitic, Nenad Matejic, Nenad Grbic, Zoran Pesic tries; Dalibor Vukanovic goal)

Field: Glyka Nera Football Club.
Referee: Phil Bentham (England).
Touch Judges: Kevin Rudd (Scotland), Doug Keen (Austraia).
Crowd: 150
Well done to all involved! Glad Greece won tho :D and well done to the Serbs for scoring 26 points!

too bad our very own Jovan Vujosevic didn't manage to get a try.

And isn't it weird how Greece got 2 from 10 conversions and Serbia got 1 from 6!? They're both great soccer nations, you'd think they'd be a bit more accurate with the boot than that.

it sounds like a good match with the lead changing so many times.

Serbia play more games than just about any other international side.
They deserve huge thanks for making big trips like this, and hosting so many sides as well.

That's rite, the Serbs are doing a fantastic job, and the best part is they are a team full of home grown players. They are a great example of how to start league from scratch.

Before I say anything about the match, I wish to thank to all of you who notice Serbia's efforts to establish and spread the game. This year we played 14 international matches (including 3 U19 European Nations Cup games) and attended on two international 9-a-side tournaments (7th on Mx9s, 2nd in Lezignan).
The reason why convert kicks were so imprecise is that, no matter 16 tries were scored, defences were very good, and 90% of tries were scored at the corners.
I hope I will very soon post some pictures from the match that I made from the ground.
Thanks again to all supporters!

It's a pleasure for me (and I think many others as well) to hear about the great work being done by guys such as youself and others in countries like serbia, Jamaica, Germany, Holland, etc. It really does make my day when I read about new initiatives and development of the game in these countries. The results may not be going your way at the moment but one day things will change and then I guess you'll be partying like crazy.

We all owe guys like you so much.

I remember, when I wrote somewhere that Serbia will play v Greece, that someone said that they will demolish us. I said, "OK, but we are going to play". The thing that I wanted to say then proved to be true on Saturday. Young Serbian players were so excited and highly motivated and honoured to play versus Michael Korkidas, one great professional and player, and other Aussie-born Greeks (and locals, of course). Of course, if John Skandalis played, the difference would be probably higher, but we would still play. And there were 5 players from this year U19 Euro Nations Cup and 4 debutants (in full 13-a-side game) in Serbian team.

Here are some shots.

The Greek laws about organization of any kind of event (sport, also) are a little bit rigid. They ask application for organizing an event up to six months in advance. So, this match was a little conspiracy (just kidding) .The lines were drew just an hour before the match because local soccer club had training session when we arrived at ground. We agreed with hosts that the playing of the game is more important then 40-20 lines, but next time they'll have to mark them ;-)

Thanks for support again!

We had very nice third half time with our Greek rugby league friends. Greek hospitality was great. We hope that next Orthodox Cup will be in Serbia and that Russians will also participate.

That would be awesome! I'm sure the Russians would be up for it. I'd say Russia or Serbia should host it because they'll attract better crowds.

i am handing in resignation letter in March. leaving a $38 000 a year job to come to Serbia to play rugby league. just be quiet about it, I am sure most Serbs will put me into mental institution if they hear about it....
