You're a Browns fan? I like you already.

With Baker & crew (bite your tongue, he's going to be great in 2019 :p) looking likely to bring back good times, you might be looking to get your despair fix here: I would suggest the Warriors.

I sure hope so. But I still stay reserved. Like I said earlier, I think Baker has a sophomore slump. Hope not but it's the Browns...

Why Warriors?

No no no! The AFCN is an interesting conference this year, with the changes at the Steelers and Big Ben getting on in years, the lifting fortunes of both the Browns and Ravens and how their young Quarterbacks progress, the new coaching staff at the Bengals and how a rookie coach with no coordinator experience goes as a head coach and offensive play caller. The AFCN is really up in the air and I could see any of the teams taking out the conference. Hopefully both Lamar and Mayfield both crumple under the pressure and Father time finally catches up with Ben and opening the conference for Andy and the Bengals!

Ah, I'm really just making fun of my NRL team (who are perennial underachievers).

I doubt Baker does really.. I actually think he landed on the bad luck side of things last year, and this time around has a far, far superior team (and coaching staff). But I get it... it's tough to get out of being super cautious thinking (see; Warriors - last season was a great example of me just not believing it).

Man, I was actually really disappointed (even as a Browns fan myself) to see Jonah Williams go down for the season. Bengals could be a really fun offense to watch, but another year of Bobby Hart starting at RT could really hurt it (particularly if Dalton goes down again). AFCN should be great - though I do wonder if the Bengals get off to a bad start, if they might think of tanking for Tua? They play Miami (the obvious tank candidate) really late so could control the draft positioning there by just giving up the game if necessary.

There are also reports of Clint Boling being gone for the season as well, so there is trouble in our OLine once again. If the Bengals get a decent Oline they have the potential to be a scary offense, but time is starting to grow short for this group of players. We hung onto Marvin Lewis for far too long.

I think I've come in at an exciting time. SoO, The Raiders, Turbo Tom, Tedesco and Maloney have all left an impression on me. I may just not choose a side right now and just try to enjoy what I am seeing. Having Watch NRL is definitely awesome. I also try and watch every show. Does anyone else like and hate Paul Kent at the same time?

Paul Kent's mum reckons he is a merkin. And she is right. A load that definitely should have been swallowed.

It's not a particularly exciting time.

The names change and teams change, but by and large it's pretty much always like this.

If I had one piece of advice it'd be don't just watch the NRL and SOO, and seek out as much footy from as many places as you possibly can.

At the very least watch a bit of Super League and if possible the other English competitions, because everybody plays the game slightly differently and there're important things that you'll learn about the game more quickly by watching Super League over the NRL, and vice versa.

So yeah try not to restrict yourself to the NRL.

Does anyone else like and hate Paul Kent at the same time?

Yeah, he's a smug prick who is to proud and/or arrogant to admit when he is wrong, but when he's right there's no arguing with what he is saying, and him being right happens more often then people like to admit.

Oh wow! Had no idea. Definitely going to check it out. Thanks!

The Jacksonville Axemen were probably the most successful and influential RL club in North America until the Toronto Wolfpack formed, in a lot of ways they probably still are if you consider that the Wolfpack is mostly funded by rich expats and it's team is totally made up of imports where the Axemen had to build from the ground up with largely local investment.

The whole Southern conference of the USARL was built off their success.

So yeah, without even knowing it you are living smack bang in the middle of the part of the USA where RL has had the most success to date.

I actually have watched a bit of footy since 2016. Most of it Super League and English comps. I was following Leeds Rhinos for a bit as well as Hull. We have The St Petersburg Pelicans Rugby Team here - about 5 miles away (I live in St. Pete) so I support them. There's also Tampa Bay Crewe just on the other side of the bay (about 12 miles from here). So I have watched Union a bit. It's only recently that I fell in love with RL.

That leads me to ask why I've not heard of the Tampa Bay Mayhem and USARL before today? That kinda bothers me as I would have been as many Mayhem matches as I can make (They're about 26 miles away). In other words, they don't market themselves across the Bay.

We're talking about a community driven (mostly) amateur competition, so it's probably not so much that they don't market across the Bay as they can't afford to really market themselves to much at all.

Makes sense. Looking forward to checking them out this weekend.

As you are a Browns fan. I think you should jump on the Bulldogs bandwagon now. Your used to failure. Dogs need a miracle to get good. But they will do that over the next couple of years. Then at least you can say you hitched your wagon to a down and out club.
