PRESS RELEASE FROM THE SHARKS

30.07.07 16:23 Age: 6 min
The Sharks announce the resignation of Chief Executive Officer Greg Pierce who will leave the club at the end of the season to accept a senior management position in the building industry.

Pierce, who has been at the Cronulla club in various capacities for a period of 15 years, the last two as CEO, has given three months notice as required by the terms of his current contract and will then take up the new position with a major building company located in Sydney’s western suburbs.
"I have been involved in rugby league for a long time, almost 25 years, but the new position I have accepted is an outstanding opportunity," he said. "This position was offered some time ago but the company is currently restructuring and the time is right for me to take on this new challenge."
With the resignation came tributes from some of the leading administrators in the game, including David Gallop, with the CEO of the NRL recognising and praising Pierce’s contribution to the Sharks and to rugby league.
"Greg Pierce has earned a lot of respect in his time as Chief Executive of the Sharks and it’s certainly a disappointment to see him leave the game for what will hopefully only be a while," Gallop said. "He’s got plenty of Rugby League experience behind him through a number of roles and while I can understand his wish to tackle new challenges in the business world, I’m sure we’ll see him around the game in the future."
Geoff Carr, the Chief Executive of the ARL, echoed Gallop’s thoughts.
"In Greg’s time in rugby league he has held senior positions with the Australian Kangaroos and backed that up as NSW origin manager this year," Carr said. "He has been a great contributor to the sport and from both a personal point of view and as far as the ARL is concerned he will be sorely missed."
Pierce will depart the Sharks at the end of the current season at a time where the club continues to build towards the future, while developments in and around the Sharks Woolooware home base indicate exciting times ahead.
"I am excited about my new position, but from the club’s point of view am confident whoever they decide to appoint can bring some new ideas and I look forward to assisting that person to settle into the Sharks role," Pierce said.
At present the Sharks are finalising plans for a redevelopment of Toyota Park, with a southern grandstand to be constructed and refurbishments to the current facilities already underway, while the car park land to the southeast of the Sharkies Leagues Club has been rezoned, with the club exploring its options as to the development of that lan

Wow.
I guess he was in a tough position, but from the outside, he seemed to be going ok.
Wondr if there were probs between the coach & him?
In particular the kimmorley retention.

With Ricky holding absolute power, my interpretation is that GP is sick of being a bit player on the side.

However the Noddy retention could certainly have been a catalyst for his decision, as no sane manager could possibly support it.

As I said a while ago, that was an appalling business decision for the Sharks longevity. Particularly with articles like those in Saturday's Herald putting rationalisation of Sydney teams back on the agenda, with Gallop's support. Of course imbeciles like Spider laughed at the time ...

ha ha - still hurting from being spanked when you wanted to debate the topic at the time

you really had no knowledge on the matter - but dont let that stop you

care to answer the questions you chose not too at the time?

or just pull the insults out to cover the lack of knowledge you have

I am interested in the Shark's success & longevity, not a pointless debate with someone who can't grasp the big picture.

Gallop has now put rationalisation of Sydney clubs back on the agenda.

Like I said at the time, Noddy's contract renewal means another 2 years of falling crowds, lower revenues & reduced sponsorship. That together with reduced grant capacity from the leagues club will put us right in the danger zone when the music stops.

Mate if you continue to believe this is not a huge risk to the club, then good for you. I prefer to deal with reality.

we were debating the fnancial situation of the club - you started sprooking of new state taxes you could not grasp or understand - how is that debate pointless? especially considering you initiated it?

you got upset when you were shown up to not know what you were talking about

I prefer to deal with reality.

hey omni - where were the sharks sitting when kimmorely was injured?

where are they sitting now?

is that a dose of that reality you seek?

Wow.

No tips from any insiders on this one hey?

Michelle will be happy.

I am very interested in the replacement.

Is there currently a De La Salle roll call happening?

Give it to Mr Vince McMahon.

Look what he did with the WWF.

And he took on the "good guys"

Cheers

big vince - very powerful man

would not mind a vested interest in his business dealings

if we were short he could throw the boots on and play front row - but would fail the drug test in a big way
