CAMDEN'S first grade rugby league team hosted Campbelltown City Kangaroos in their first trial match of the year at Kirkham Park on Sunday.

Fielding some of their new signings, the Rams had a solid pipe-opener, winning 32-6 in their game which lasted four, 20-minute quarters.

The Kangaroos' only try went to Anthony Dalton.

The Rams took a 10-0 lead at the break and got better.

Hooker Matt Jones had some strong bursts up the field and was well supported across the paddock with a number of Camden players eager to show their coach Mark De Ubago what they had to offer.

"I was happy with our first hit-out as a team," De Ubago said.

"The result was good but it was the communication, commitment and defence that was impressive.

"We had set small easy goals and we now have set a standard for ourselves.

"Neil Begovich, Sam Campbell and Joel Wisbey were great, but what was good was to see the confidence we showed. Rick Wisbey at half was good too, as was Chris Browne and Glynn Bester."

With several players yet to return, De Ubago is sure to have selection problems come round one of the Group 6 first grade competition.

The Rams go to the Hunter on Saturday for a trial against Denman.

"Denman's population is about 2000 but they always put competitive teams on the paddock," De Ubago said.

New Bundanoon coach Brett Breeze and president Chris Ingmire get ready for the 2012 season at Bundanoon Oval.

BY LAUREN WRIGHT
21 Dec, 2011 01:00 AM

AFTER months of uncertainty, Bundanoon Highlanders have announced they will join Group 6 rugby league for the 2012 season.

When negotiations with Illawarra District Rugby Union (IDRU) stalled, Bundanoon turned to Group 6.

No longer the Highlanders, Bundanoon Rugby League will play as a stand alone club in Group?6's third grade equivalent.

With a new code and a new committee, president Chris Ingmire said it was looking up for the club now that a decision had been made about its future.

"It's all going forward," he said. "I think we'll go well. Everyone's fairly keen for it."

While Bundanoon cannot take players from other clubs within Group 6 competition for the 2012 season, Ingmire said they had already picked up a few extra players.

Ingmire said key players from the Bundanoon team last year such as Kyal Martin, Dane Trompete, Lachlan Parry, Dan Hewson and Cheynne Denning had also expressed their interest to remain with the club and play rugby league.

Bundanoon struggled in the IDRU second grade competition last year and while many players had hoped to stay with Illawarra, Ingmire said they looked forward to a new challenge next year.

"It's a bit disappointing, [but] everyone's pretty happy to go to league," he said.

There will also be a new man in charge, with Brett Breeze to take on the coaching role for Bundanoon.

Breeze has had experience as a rugby league coach and was involved with Moss Vale Dragons for a number of years.

"I'm looking forward to coaching," he said. "I think they've got a pretty good group of fellas here who are really keen, so I think they should adapt to rugby league and it should be a good season," Breeze said.
While a number of players had had league experience, Breeze said he wanted to get the basics right to begin with and hoped they could be competitive.

"I think we'll just keep it pretty simple to start with," he said.
Bundanoon will hold a sign-up evening on Saturday, January 15, at the Central Hotel in Moss Vale.

Any players aged 17 and over are encouraged to join, with training beginning on Tuesday, January 17, at Bundanoon Oval at 6pm.

"Even though the guys played rugby union, I think rugby league is such a popular sport [that] everyone knows the basic rules of the game so I don't think it'll take them long to adapt," Breeze said.

"As long as the guys are competitive in their first season that's the main thing."

Moss Vale Dragons lose their fire

RUGBY league comes with highs and lows.

And no club knows this better at the moment than the Moss Vale Dragons.
After claiming the premiership in 2010, the Dragons have now had to pull out of first grade for the 2012 season.

What was once a great club now appears to be in decline but club members and former players remain hopeful their demotion will only last a year.

"It was just a lack of player numbers and not enough players to put on the field," Dragons president Greg Maloney said.

"It's been difficult but you can't do much about it when there's not enough to field a first grade team."

"It was quite a hard decision to make. The reality was we're better to field one good team and build back into first grade next year. The club sees this as a one year operation."

Throughout pre-season, Moss Vale lost a number of key senior first grade players which hit the club hard.

Dan Drewe and Shane Martin were unable to play due to work commitments, Elliot Esquilant, Scott Drewe and Robbie Noble have headed down the coast to Jamberoo, a few players went overseas, Tim Small defected to the Bowral Blacks and as the prospect of playing third grade loomed large, skipper Willie McDonald also jumped ship.

McDonald has not yet decided where he will play this year, but has spoken to both Jamberoo and Mittagong Lions.

"I reckon having third grade teams haven't helped at all. Personally I reckon it's a load of rubbish. People play third grade and that takes away a lot of our player depth," McDonald said.

"Four or five players have gone back to Bundy and there's a few out at Robbo and Bowral who were Mossy juniors I think. The Group needs to look at whether they want a viable first grade comp or just play third grade.

Personally I think it's a waste of time. Some people are not really serious; [they] just want to play footy for fun. It makes it hard when you've got small towns."

And with even more third grade clubs under the Group 6 banner this year with the inclusion of Bundanoon and Bargo, players have even more options than before.

But Group 6 chairman Grahame Andrews said it was issues within the club which had led to Moss Vale's problems and nothing else.

"People may suggest Bundanoon haven't helped but Bundanoon wouldn't provide first grade players," Andrews said.

"It's very very disappointing. They've spoken to prospective players in and out of the Group, but it's too far to travel. I think we can help Moss Vale; we're determined to try and get them back in first grade."

Bundanoon president Chris Ingmire said while a few players had come over from Moss Vale to play for them, they had previously been involved with the club.

"The players that came back were players for us before and had one year at Moss Vale and one other bloke who came to play with his mate," he said.

Former player Tim Small said rather than third grade draining player resources, it was internal issues which led to a lack of players.

"Just one of those transitional years where unfortunately for the club the top players have other pursuits. The committee was probably a bit idle in retaining and securing top players through pre-season and this had a flow on effect down the grades," he said.

While it may be tough times ahead for Moss Vale, the hopes of the club now hang on the juniors.

"The new [junior] committee is doing a good job for the club. We've struggled to get under-18s for the last couple of years [but] the 18s are the best group I've seen at the club for a long time."

Small agreed the future of the club's juniors was looking good.

"Numbers are ok in the juniors which hopefully sees the club lift again next year if they can secure some established first grade players a little earlier. It's such a great club and such a shame to see the club go from premiers to not fielding a team in space of two years."

Moss Vale have not been the only club to struggle.

Bowral Blues may yet have to withdraw from the third grade competition, also due to lack of numbers.

After signing former Moss Vale coach Randall 'Cheeky' Laughton for the 2012 season, Andrews said he had expected to see a boost in the club's numbers.

"I was delighted when the signed Cheeky. I don't know what the problem is."

Eagles set to swoop on Group 6

Set to soar: Campbelltown Eagles coaches Richard Barnes (right) and Jason Hazelton (second right) and players Jarryd Eggleton (from left), Ben Weir and Michael Stevens and (back, from left) Glen Harding, Michael Ginnelly and Daniel Draper are eager for the season to start.Picture: Jonathan Ng

STILL smarting from last season's Group 6 first grade rugby league grand final defeat against Oakdale, Campbelltown Eagles are intent on claiming the premiership to avenge last season's failure at the final hurdle.

Although the Eagles realise that to achieve this will be no stroll in the park, their sights are set on mounting a serious challenge on the premiership.
Eagles' joint coaches Richard Barnes and Jason Hazelton plan a dual-pronged attack to achieve their goals.

They believe their players have done the hard yards during pre-season training to be competitive and could use the heartbreaking grand final loss as motivation this year.

"It was very disappointing — I absolutely still burn over that," Barnes said.
"The boys are out for revenge and want some sort of redemption for it but we're not kidding ourselves, we know how much hard work we'll have to do.

"We want to get into the top three and, hopefully, if we learn from last year that'll benefit us.

"The boys are motivated on that but we can't just concentrate on revenge for the grand-final loss."

Losing key players Matthew Blunden, who left to try rugby union with Camden, and Brad Hopkins, who left for England, the Eagles have retained the bulk of their squad from last season.

New signings Will Dreves of Picton, Ben Weir of Camden and Mason Talalou, who returns to the club after playing two years with Wests Tigers national 20s team, will bolster the ranks.

Set to soar when the competition starts, the Eagles will rely on a trio of players to reproduce the fine form they displayed last year.

Barnes said the team had talent in all positions.

"My key players again will be Wayde Dunley, Sam Hoare and John da Silva," he said.

"But we've got a lot of young players who keep surprising at training and they could force their way into the team.

"The boys have a lot of energy and are getting stuck in so I think we'll be hard to beat and we can't wait to get going and get the wheels turning for the start of the season."

Barnes praised the club's backroom staff who he said had "done an outstanding job in the pre-season making it easier for us to get the boys ready for games".

Daniel Draper will coach the reserves, Allan Knight and Allan Rousell will coach third grade and Michael Ginnelly will coach the under-18s.

If it hadnt of been for work i would have been in this photo.

Group 6 league will start soon

07 Mar, 2012 01:00 AM

THE wait is almost over for local footy starved fans .

The elite rugby league competition featuring local teams, the Group 6 competition, will start the winter season on March 25.

The scheduled Group 6 first grade rugby league competition originally included 11 teams but two have recently pulled out.

Mostly due to lack of player numbers, last year's beaten grand finalists Moss Vale and the Appin team, which planned to enter a first grade team for the first time in many years, plan not to enter a first grade team.

The competition will include nine teams in first grade this season.

Unless the current draw is revamped, the opening round will feature blockbuster games with the traditional derby round clashes.

Thirlmere/Tahmoor, with new coach Dane Wooden in charge, will host rivals Picton, under the guidance of their new coach Russell Lewis.

Campbelltown City Kangaroos are at home against fellow Campbelltown club Campbelltown Eagles.

Coach Daryn Fallshaw will be in charge of Narellan against Camden at Narellan Sportsground.

Such a shame about Moss Vale.

Always had good clashes against them in Reserve Grade, even though we have won all of them.

Bundanoon start to show promise

By Lauren Wright

IN their first game of rugby league, Bundanoon went down 34-28 to Goulburn Exchange in Goulburn but it was a promising start.

After seven years of rugby union, the Highlanders went down by only a converted try.

"I think their attack was quite good. We just need to work on our defence," coach Brett Breeze said.

"It seemed to be an area that needs attention."

While the match ended up eight tries to six, Breeze said to let in eight tries was "probably a bit excessive".

Kyal Martin scored two tries for the visiting team along with two conversions, with Pete Randazzo and Corey Webber also scoring.

Breeze said fitness was also an issue but with limited training throughout the pre-season, it was a good performance from the team.

"Overall it was a pretty positive display. Everyone put their hand up and had a real go," he said.

Bundanoon president Chris Ingmire agreed it was a good start to the season but there were a few things to work on.

"The boys went really well but our defence let us down.

The heat was also a factor on the day and Bundanoon began to struggle as fatigue set in.

"It was quite hot on Saturday but they never stopped trying," Breeze said.
Bundanoon will face Mt Annan this Sunday and Breeze said they would need to lift their game in order to record a win.

"Mt Annan are a pretty well drilled side. We'll really have to lift our game in defence. I think it'll be quite a big score if we don't improve," he said.

Ingmire said while they didn't know too much about Mt Annan, they would be adding a few new elements to their game as well as working on defence.

"We'll add a few more plays into the game instead of just going easy," he said.

"All the boys are looking forward to our next game."

The match will kick off at 12pm on Sunday and Ingmire thanked their sponsors Central Hotel, Sylvan Glen and Don Turner Earthworks for their support.

Some great news for the group.

Piggy in the middle

Happy as a pig in mud: Mark Riddell celebrating a win during his days as a Parramatta Eel. Picture: Dallas Kilponen

MARK "Piggy" Riddell will be putting on a Tigers jersey this year after The Oaks signed the former NRL star for this Group 6 season.

In his 189 first-grade games with St George Illawarra, Parramatta and the Roosters, Riddell was as known for his one arm salute before kicking for goal and his post try celebrations as he was for his crafty dummy half play.

But he doesn't miss the scrutiny of playing on the big stage of the NRL or the English competition.

"It's going to be good to play without the ridiculous pressure of the NRL and be able to have a beer after the game," he told the Advertiser.

"I just want to have fun and play well for The Oaks. I'm not missing NRL footy at all.

"I really enjoy watching the game now, whereas when I was playing I didn't really.

"I don't miss being out there."

Tigers first grade coach Mark Lowe said Riddell's signature is a coup for The Oaks and for Group 6 in general.

"He'll bring plenty of experience for us, and someone the boys can look up to," he said.

"He'll also be great for Group 6.

"People will take notice when they see his name on the list."

Riddell is the Sydney Roosters S.G. Ball coach and will play whenever the two competitions don't overlap.

"The comp finishes in April or May, so I'll be getting to a lot more games after that," he said.

"I'll be playing round one for sure."

Riddell said he knows "a fair bit" about Group 6, as his brother played for Camden.

"I'm not too sure about the standard this year," he said.

"But there are a few other NRL boys who have signed up — like Stuart Flanagan.

"That will make the standard even stronger."

He admitted he supports the Roosters in the NRL, the club where he still coaches, but isn't as passionate when they come up against the Dragons or Eels.

"All three clubs played a huge role in my career," he said.

"So I definitely have mixed feelings when they play each other."

Some good news for Moss Vale

Moss Vale Dragons win new sponsor

WHILE Moss Vale Dragons have struggled in recent months, things have begun to look up for the embattled Dragons after they signed a new sponsorship agreement with Hume Coal.

The company have agreed to sponsor both the junior and senior teams in what will be a massive boost for the club.

"We're looking forward to a new partnership [and] hopefully a long term agreement between the two parties," junior Dragons president Matthew Burke said

"particularly for me from the juniors point of view, any sort of financial support that we can get for us to support the kids and put back into the kids [is great] so that's why we approached them."

"I know they're a large company and it's worked out well.

"We've already purchased some kits for the kids which include balls, jumpers, shirts, socks and shorts."

"That'll be here for the kids next week so it's already been a huge boost for our club."

Cockatoo Coal manager Tim Rheinberger said Hume Coal were glad to support a local club within the Highlands.

"The Hume Coal Project is very pleased to support the Moss Vale Dragons and looks forward to watching them succeed both with their development of juniors through the grades to seniors as well as their success on the field," he said.

"We look forward to supporting the club for many years."

The junior Dragons will also have their first trials on Sunday against the other Southern Highlands clubs and Burke said it would be a good way to kick off the season.

"It's to promote rugby league in the Southern end and give the kids a bit of a feel for it, so we're looking forward to it," he said.

With Damien Barton named as coach for the senior team this year, Burke said the seniors were also keen to play their first match.

"Pre-season for the seniors has been good," he said.

"All the lads are looking forward to it and keen to get amongst it for the first game.

It's going to be an interesting year, it's all happening."

Eagles facing Kangaroos

THE clash of Campbelltown will kick off the Group 6 season on Sunday when Campbelltown Eagles take on the Campbelltown Kangaroos at Victoria Park in Picton.

Campbelltown Eagles coach Richard Barnes said the club is excited about the season ahead.

"To start the season with the local derby is a great initiative from the Group 6 management," he said.

"There is a bitter disappointment to all the players' supporters and staff that this game isn't played on Campbelltown soil, but we are happy just to be playing rugby league this weekend."

Campbelltown Kangaroos president Heath Attard said his players are keen for the challenges ahead.

"We are looking forward to the season with good hard footy week in week out," he said.

Under-18s kick off at 10am, third grade at 11.30am, reserve grade at 1pm and first grade kicks off at 2.30pm.

Personally as a player for one of these clubs this game should be played in Campbelltown.

There is no longer a Wests seniors comp.

They have joined other sydney comps in the ICCC.

All other districts all agreed that no games would be played further than Hillier Oval in Liverpool.

This means that there will be no senior competition in Campbelltown this year.

By Lauren Wright

ROBERTSON Spuds claimed the first bragging rights over local rivals Bundanoon on Sunday with a 30-18 win.

Dropped ball and penalties by both teams kept the score close at halftime and the Spuds just had their noses in front 14-10.

Bundanoon's Richie Martin was sin binned just before the break for a professional foul and with only 12 players on the field to start the second half, Robertson took advantage of the overlap in numbers and scored to take the lead to 18-10.

With about 15 minutes left on the clock, Bundanoon brought themselves to within four points and trailed 18-14.

But Robertson refused to let the game go and scored two tries before Bundanoon hit back right on the final buzzer.

Bundanoon were also unfortunate to lose their halfback Mark Johnson to injury at halftime.

Coach Brett Breeze said the news was not good at this stage.

"It doesn't look good. It'll definitely impact on us, he's our play maker and directs all the traffic on the field so to lose him this early in the season would be pretty devastating," he said.

"We're hoping it's not a permanent injury."

Despite the loss, Breeze said he was happy with the team's performance.
"I think we just lacked a bit of direction in the second half because we lost our halfback. Very pleasing otherwise and looking forward to the rest of the season," he said.

Second row worked tirelessly and in the backs Jason Bentley, he worked really well."

With only a couple of pre-season trials under their belts, Bundanoon have struggled with match fitness, but Breeze said it would take a few weeks to get that game time.

"The first couple of games fitness is always going to be an issue because you don't have match fitness. I think towards the next few rounds we'll probably get more match fitness and that'll make a big difference to us."

New Spuds coach Ben Hanson was also pleased with his side's first round performance.

"It was good. A little bit of mistakes but first game you sort of can't ask too much," he said.

"It was a good hit out, [the] forwards are probably off their game a little bit today but once they got back into the swing of things they were good."

With a new halves combination of Arron Ditton and Mitchell Wright, Hansen said they had worked well together.

"Mitch has been out of the game for a couple of years so it was good to see him back and matt Mauger played a good part in the centres."

After watching the boys in action yesterday afternoon, Hansen said they needed to improve their defence over the next few rounds.

"Defence and the kick offs, the boys are a bit shallow, not getting up off their line and our defence just needs a bit of a pick up," he said.

f**king A. Great start. I must get to a few games this year.

If you can head out this weekend. Grand final rematch Oakdale v Campbelltown Eagles

Unfortunately I won't be there as I will be in Adelaide but it should be a good game.

The Oaks major signing of Piggy Riddell played and looks like that didn't help much

Great thread! Look forward to reading more reports throughout the year.

I too aim to go to a few matches this year. I've lived in the area for nearly 5 years but haven't really aligned myself with a team yet nor gone to a game - I'll probably go with my local team the Camden Rams, who play out of Kirkham Park at Elderslie.

But I would love to go to other grounds as well throughout the year. I'll introduce my two young boys to the great game too! :)
