Great thread! Look forward to reading more reports throughout the year.

I too aim to go to a few matches this year. I've lived in the area for nearly 5 years but haven't really aligned myself with a team yet nor gone to a game - I'll probably go with my local team the Camden Rams, who play out of Kirkham Park at Elderslie.

But I would love to go to other grounds as well throughout the year. I'll introduce my two young boys to the great game too! :)

yeah its a good atmoshpere at most grounds. Plenty of space for kids to run around too.

MOSS VALE under-18 Dragons have kicked off their 2012 campaign with a 28-18 win over local rivals Mittagong Lions.

With a number of new players and restricted pre-season practice due to rain, team manager Tony Mitchell said he was pleased with the sides performance on Sunday.

"For the first game and they haven't played together before, it was a bit sloppy but that's to be expected. We made a lot of mistakes," he said.
"We're happy to with the win."

Mitchell said Nick Tuddeman, who has not played rugby league before did a great job but it was not all good news for the Dragons.

Captain Dylan Redman injured his shoulder and appears set to be out for the rest of the season.

While the Lions were on the losing end of the score line, coach Dave Elliot said it was still a good start to the season.

"It's going to be a long season. There were a lot of positives," he said.
Ash Ngaia, Cory Brownlee and Tim Townsend crossed the line for Mittagong, with Townsend kicking the goals.

Elliot said Josh Prior and Jack McCrae in the front row did well and James Coman at hooker made some good runs out of dummy half.

"For the first game I'm pretty happy with how we went," he said.

The Lions will face Warragamba this Sunday, and Elliot said he wanted his team to improve their defence moving forward in a straight line.

Moss Vale will face Campbelltown Eagles and Mitchell said they hoped they could come away with another win.n.

REIGNING Group 6 first grade rugby league premiers Oakdale continued where they left off last season by thumping rivals The Oaks 62-24 in the season opener on Saturday night.

Playing under new floodlights at Sid Sharpe Memorial Oval, Oakdale exploded into action with only a few minutes played.

It took Tye O'Brien just three minutes to score the first tryof the Group 6 first grade rugby league season.

Back to his best, a speedier Bart Masters sprung into action in the first half, setting up three tries for his teammates.

The first of his assists came when he burst through some sloppy The Oaks defence to put Kyle Weh in for a try in the 12th minute.

Only five minutes later Masters was again the playmaker, putting new signing Brad Cameron in for his first try for the club in the 17th minute.

Cameron showed a great burst of speed to race to the line.

Masters continued his masterful performance by putting stalwart David Lowe over for a try.

Despite playing no trial games because of recent rain, the Oakdale team's performance pleased their coach John Stanley.

"We knew we were travelling well," Stanley said.

"Having no trial games, this was our first game under match conditions.

"We were tested early and we leaked two tries, but after that we got ourselves into a good position.

"Playing on the right edge gave Bart more room to move."
The Oaks coach Mark Lowe attributed his team's loss to his players' numerous "continual errors".

"If we're to be competitive against Picton this week we must stop the constant errors and sort out our defence," Lowe said.

Lowe named Rory Vale, who scored two tries, Ryan Owen and Mark Riddell as best for his team.

Stanley noted the performances of Matt McCauley, Masters and new signings Stuart Flanagan and Cameron.

"Brad Cameron - he's a dangerous, quality, young player at only 19 years old," Stanley said.

"It's a good win for the club in our first game under the new lights."

In the year of their title defence, Stanley hopes his team can maintain their winning ways.

"We hope to put ourselves in a good position over the next couple of rounds," he said.

Group 6 players dynamic in derbies

Former NRL player: Oakdale's Stuart Flanagan.

BY SEAN CUNNINGHAM
28 Mar, 2012 01:00 AM

THE Group 6 rugby league season started in fine style on the weekend with exciting action being displayed around the local grounds in the now traditional opening rivalry round of derby games.

Last year's premiers Oakdale hosted The Oaks in the season-opener on Saturday night at Sid Sharpe Memorial Oval.

Both teams sported former NRL players with Mark Riddell taking to the field for The Oaks and Stuart Flanagan playing for the Workers.

Both scored tries in their debut in Group 6 but it was Flanagan's team that were too good, running out 62-24 winners.

It was a great start to the season for new Roosters' coach Dane Wooden who witnessed his team beating Picton 34-22.

Another game played in Wollondilly was the clash between last year's beaten grand finalists Campbelltown Eagles and Campbelltown City Kangaroos.

Eagles were too strong, winning 52-10.

Narellan hosted Camden and in many rugby league pundits' minds recorded a surprise 35-4 victory.

The weekend's first grade games will feature Narellan hosting Mittagong on Saturday at 7pm.

Sunday's games, starting at 2.30pm, will see a rematch of last season's grand final with Oakdale at home against Campbelltown Eagles, Camden host Thirlmere/Tahmoor and Picton are at home against The Oaks.

The Campbelltown Kangaroos have the bye.

Jets romp to big score

NARELLAN'S first grade rugby league coach Daryn Fallshaw has had a dream start to the season with a 35-4 victory over Camden.

Playing on Sunday at Narellan Sportsground, an inexperienced Jets outfit prevailed over their more fancied rivals.

Speedster Ben Baker opened the scoring with a try for the Jets. They never looked back, racing to a 20-0 lead at the break.

"We were very enthusiastic and competed well against the much more experienced Camden," Fallshaw said.

"After we scored, we then proceeded to dominate through the middle.
"Camden tried hard through the contest but at 20-0 down at half-time, only had pride to play for in the second half."

Fallshaw said Narellan's best players were Josh Graham, Dave McDonald and Cameron Graham.

A disappointed Camden coach Mark de Ubago was left scratching his head looking for answers for the poor result.

The Rams, missing several outside backs, were second best on the day.

"It's hard to say if Narellan were good or we were bad," De Ubago said.

"One thing though, we were out-enthused, we had no urgency.

"Three early errors led to three early tries and from there we were never in the game.

"We are currently struggling with injuries but the players who played there did a good job considering.

"Our attitude has to change if we are to improve; things won't just happen."

Best for Camden were Neil Begovich and Aaron Firman.

The team can draw on a strong squad of reserve grade and under-18 players and will need to perform well in their next game.

"We play Thirlmere at home this week and it will be tough so we hope for a big crowd," De Ubago said.

The Campbelltown Eagles played Thirlmere at Thirlmere Sports Ground on Sunday the 15th of April; these two clubs have had a fierce rivalry since the inclusion of the Eagles in Group 6 in 2009. The Eagles raced to an early lead when Leigh Middlemiss posted first points and not long after Sam Hoare was next top score, with Will Dreves kicking both goals the Eagles led 12 nil. The Roosters hit back from an Eagles mistake that seen James Trotter run away and minutes later his brother Trent Trotter crossed to level up the scores 12 All. The Eagles scored a try right on half time when Sean Connor crossed for the Eagles to go into half time 24-18

The second half Thirlmere posted first points when Trent Trotter carved up the Eagles defence to once again level up the scores, the game was going try for try and the Eagles scored another to Mason Talolou crashed over and Dreves super boot was on target for the Eagles 30-24, Roosters James Trotter scored next to level up the score at 30 All with 15 minutes remaining, and then the Eagles lifted when Eagles little Staffordshire Terrier Jarryd Eggleton crashed over next to the posts for a match winner, Grant Lahey then scored to seal the win and Will Dreves kicking 6 from 7 for the Eagles victory, Best for the Eagles were Brett Lahey, Grant Lahey, John Da-Silva and Wayde Dunley.

Brawl erupts at Dragons' den

Jack Webb retaliates to a knee in a tackle.

Brad Meuleman joins in the fight.

15 Apr, 2012 05:15 PM
By Lauren Wright

IN one of the most controversial matches the Highlands has ever seen, Moss Vale Dragons recorded a win over Mt Annan this afternoon (April 15) when the match was called off by referees.

Tensions had flared frequently throughout the match as Moss Vale dominated Mt Annan to lead 30-6 at halftime.

Midway through the second half, a brawl erupted between the two teams and looked set to continue off the field.

Four players were sent off from Mt Annan with a few more walking off the field in disgust, while Jack Webb and Brad Meuleman were sent from the field from the Dragons.

Moss Vale had appeared set to run away with the match before the fight broke out and Dragons’ skipper Damien Barton said it was a disappointing way to finish the match.

“I think one of our players copped a bit of a knee in a tackle and it sort of erupted from there,” he said.

“It wasn’t a real good way to finish a game. Bit of a hot day and tempers flared but that shouldn’t really happen in footy.

“You don’t want the game to end like that. It was pretty crap but these things happen. I can understand the refs calling it off, it was probably only going to get worse.”

Meuleman and Webb will face the judiciary tonight and Barton said he hoped their suspensions weren’t too lengthy.

While the talking point of the match will continue to be it’s controversial finish, what has been overlooked is the dominant performance by the Dragons.

“The first half was great, it was a heaps big improvement from last week so I was happy with that,” Barton said.

“Just wish we could have finished the game. We need a bit of match fitness and that’s not going to help.”

“The first 20 minutes we played really good. I don’t think we made a mistake that first 20. Second 20 we just sort of started trying our hand a little bit so that’s when a few errors started creeping in [but] to be up 30-6 at halftime we must have done something right.”

Barton said Meulman had a good game, as did Steve Meuleman at halfback.

“Stevie at halfback started to talk which is really good and just all the forwards kept going forward which was really good. I couldn’t fault any forward in the first half.”

Barton said they stared the second half well despite a 10 minute lapse but was pleased that the performance was an improvement from past performances.

“I’m pretty sure we finished off with a win [and] as long as we keep on improving like that we’’ be right,” he said.

“If we improve every week I’ll be happy.”

First grade Lions fire to down reigning premiers

IT was a difficult night for Oakdale at the Lions den on Saturday when they went down to Mittagong 44-22 in first grade.

The reigning premiers failed to fire and the Lions sunk their teeth into the weakened opponent.

Oakdale struggled to get close to their line in the first half and it seemed the Lions were scoring at will.

Coach Scott Borg said the preparation for the match had been much better and it showed on the field.

Borg, Mark Delamont and Warwick Carter all crossed the line twice in the Lions decisive win.

Borg said being at home provided some inspiration for his team and with more enthusiasm and a better attitude they played to their potential.

"Overall I was pretty happy with the game and completing our sets," he said.

While the Lions had a 15 minute lapse in the second half where they let in three quick tries, Borg said it was still a dominant performance.

"The score didn't reflect just how dominant we were," he said.

Borg said Delamont and Erin Blackshaw both played well and the Lions' next goal would be to play the full 80 minutes of football.

Mittagong's next match will be against Picton at home next weekend and Borg said he hoped for another win to get some momentum going for the season.

"I hope we can get on a bit of a roll," he said.

Borg said they needed to improve on getting up in their line of defence and continue to complete their sets.

"It was a great team performance and hopefully we can continue to do well in the rest of the season," he said.

AN injury-riddled Bundanoon team stood up to the challenge of Bargo Bunnies at Oakdale but came up short on Sunday.

The Bundanoon team had a lot of players out due to injury prior to the game and unfortunately lost even more during the match.

The Bunnies took advantage of Bundanoon's receding numbers and were able to run away with the win 30-10.

Yet Bundanoon remain confident in their potential for the rest of season once they get their full squad back.

"Despite the injuries which really affected our performance we are still going well," club president Chris Ingmire said.

The standout performances of Bhyne Mannings and Paul Quigg were a small glimmer of hope for the depleted Bundanoon side playing good games in both attack and defence.

The loss has given Bundanoon plenty to work on ahead of their next game,
"We really need to improve on our defence and set plays; that's what really let us down," Ingmire said

He also said there was a lot that they could of done better during the game.

"We could of defended a lot better during the game and also we weren't as structured as we would of liked".

ROBERTSON third grade have come away with a comfortable win over Jamberoo 32-8 on the weekend in a high tempered game where punches were thrown.

Robertson captain Doug Tilly said he was pleased with the win.
"Our defence was really good and our ball control improved a lot since last week where we dropped it a lot."

Robertson players Jesse Mauger and Mitchell Wright both had good games with Wright scoring two tries and Pat Pearce crossing the line three times..
Even with the convincing win Tilly still said there were things his team still needed to improve on.

"We need to speed up the playthe ball for next game".

In the second half tempers started flying along with punches as a fight broke out between the two teams.

A high tackle by Jamberoo on Matthew Mauger broke the tension, when he retaliated and started throwing punches.

Mauger was from the field and will face judiciary later this week.

Tilly said the season was far from over and doesn't want to jump to conclusions about his team's potential yet.

"I know Mossy is going good so we will just have to see how it pans out,"he said.

Welcome return: Campbelltown Eagles fans are thrilled to be able to watch their team return to Waminda Oval. Picture: Luke Fuda

A JUBILANT trio of Campbelltown clubs that affiliated to Group 6 — Campbelltown Eagles, Campbelltown City Kangaroos and Macarthur Bulls — welcomed last week's decision to allow them back to their homeland to train and play in Campbelltown.

No longer will they have to share grounds in Camden and Wollondilly.
The three clubs regularly played at Onslow Park, Camden, during their exile from Campbelltown.

During a NSW Rugby League board meeting, the board voted to lift the "play and train" rule that prevented the three Campbelltown-based Group 6 clubs from playing and training in the Campbelltown Council area.

The clubs are eager to return to their original home grounds and are seeking approval from Campbelltown Council to do so.

Talented local players now have the option of choosing to play in two strong competitions: metropolitan and country. The Western Suburbs District Junior League teams play in the Inner City Combined Competition.

Macarthur Bulls president Matt Hughes said the Bulls were looking forward to building a "strong, community-based club" for the area's youth.

"We are pleased we can focus on building a rugby league club and establish a sense of identity to the Macarthur area," he said.

Kangaroos president Heath Attard was also delighted to have the club return to Campbelltown in front of their home crowd.

"The Kangaroos are Campbelltown's oldest and most famous sporting club," Attard said.

"We are very proud to once again represent our town and provide a strong rugby league community for young men in the area."

Campbelltown Eagles have a game scheduled to take place at Waminda Oval on Sunday against The Oaks.

A large crowd is expected, as fans are eager to witness the encounter between John Da Silva and former NRL player Mark "Piggy" Riddell.

Ref threatens to end game

Safe hands: Luke Wisbey puts his body on the line for Camden in their 28-14 win over Picton on Sunday at Kirkham Park. Picture: Sean Cunningham

CAMDEN defeated Picton 28-14 in their Group 6 rugby league first-grade game on Sunday but the real story of the game at Kirkham Park was that the victory was almost given to the Magpies when Camden were behind after only 30 minutes had been played.

The referee threatened to stop the game because of unruly behaviour from Camden fans on the sidelines.

He stopped the game and asked ground officials to warn a group of about 40 Camden fans on the sidelines to curb their abusive language.

The referee told ground officials they had five minutes to "pull the group into line" or he would stop the game.

Police were called and the first half continued without incident.

Camden started well to race to a 8-0 lead after seven minutes with tries to Glyn Bester and Sam Campbell, but Picton's Chris Young single-handedly took the lead from Camden with two tries within 10 minutes.

One of them was converted to give Picton a 10-8 lead in the 27th minute and the Magpies added a penalty conversion to take a 12-8 lead to the break.

Only a few minutes into the second half, the referee held up the game once more because of offensive behaviour from Camden fans.

He asked ground officials to intervene and warn some spectators about their abusive language.

A Rams official described the offensive behaviour from a minority of fans as "disgraceful".

He said it was the worst behaviour he had witnessed from Camden fans at the ground in 30 years.

The game restarted with Aaron Da Silva scoring a try for Camden in the corner to level the score.

Picton kicked a penalty goal in the 57th minute and that was the final time they would score.

Adam Marshall was on the end of a kick to put Camden into the lead and minutes later Luke Wisbey grounded the ball between the posts.

Bester scored his second try to seal the win with two minutes remaining.
Camden coach Mark De Ubago agreed his team secured victory the hard way.

"It was ugly but we ground it out," he said.

"It's a great win. We needed a win.

"We were playing some good footy but we can't seem to turn it on for the full 80 minutes.

"When we make mistakes we can't seem to overcome them."

De Ubago was pleased with his team's overall performance and noted a few standouts.

"Glyn Bester played well and Luke Wisbey was safe at the back."

Embarrassing loss for Lions

Ryan Borg scrambles to get the ball back. Photo by Roy Truscott

By Lauren Wright

MITTAGONG Lions suffered an embarrassing loss to Picton yesterday afternoon, giving the Magpies their first win of the season with a 20-6 victory.

The Lions found themselves in front early with a try to Matt Thorpe.
But that was where their luck ended.

Picton evened the score just before halftime to leave the scores tied 6-6 at the break.

The Lions never really looked like scoring in the second half and the Magpies claimed their first win of 2012.

Coach Scott Borg said it was a disappointing performance, given they had smashed last year's premiers Oakdale the previous week.

"Coming off last week's win, beating the premiers to playing Picton who haven't won a game yet and to pull out a performance like that it's terrible," he said.

In very different conditions from last week, with the rain a constant problem, Mittagong hurt themselves by dropping the ball which gifted Picton easy possession.

"It (wet weather) sort of evens up the game a fair bit but our enthusiasm just wasn't there," he said.

Borg said the Lions went into the match overly confident.

"Our enthusiasm wasn't there. We came out thinking that we had an easy win and they came out and pulled our pants down. Congratulations to them."

The penalty count also continued to pile up against Mittagong, but Borg said it still came down to their own mistakes.

"You can blame that (penalty count) but a lot of that's just down to us not completing our tackles and you put yourselves in the situation to get bad penalties so I think the blame is ours and not the referees."

Tensions boiled over and comments made to the referee by Lions players earned them another mark against their name.

With the score 12-6, Picton took the two points on offer and gave themselves a eight point buffer.

"I don't think they were happy with the calls but the referee makes mistakes as well so you can't get angry at the referee. It's our own fault and we've just got to deal with it," Borg said.

Missed tackles also hurt the Lions and Borg said their defence needed to improve before this weekend's clash against Camden.

"Just making contact in tackles, they just ran over the top of us a lot of the time. A big game against Camden [who have] a big pack so we have to make sure we are hitting hard and dominating the ruck."

Borg also said the lack of enthusiasm from the Lions was a problem.

"Just from the start you could tell the difference with no talk. Our warm up was good, we trained well during the week but just didn't come out," he said.

"I think it's all just down to attitude. Hopefully we pick it up next week."
Borg said there were no standouts in a match where everyone struggled against a Picton said who had all the momentum.

"I think everyone's got to work on their game a little bit."
