gus goulds subtle stab at the super league

Goulds idea falls on its face with the average performances of ellis and burgess, our best forwards/players were graham and westwood.
Surely it should have been our players playing in the NRL who were head and shoulders above the rest?

The ESL is a substandard competition there is nothing more to it. Any person that believes it is anywhere near the standard of the NRL is delusional. However with the ridiculous import free for all they have and non restrction on polynesian players whatever keeps England uncompetitive can't be a bad thing.

English RL simply needs more people playing the game before they can think about anything else. It is of no use getting rid of the imports who bring higher skills to the competition and replace them with inferior local players.

I understand the playing numbers have doubled in the last 5 years and governing body is looking to increase this by another 60k over the next 5 years. This will be the start of building a greater team. Add to this some confidence and then England can again be a great competitor on the international RL scene. :p

Gould should ask Matt King about how the backs in England are at park level. Given that he spent a season and a half being out played by them all completely. :(

Or Orford, Tronc etc. who have cried home after less than a season because the park level bullies obviously picked on them... (Obviously they got or will get nowhere near a NRL team due the incredible standards on offer 1-17 by every team)

Or Buderus about playing in a challenge cup final, cause that would be easy for him to dominate as its only like 14 year old aussies playing in the bush...

Or Ellis about how life is hard playing for the tigers and how he struggles to even get in the 17...

What a muppet.

What we don't need is to import Aussis refs, that test showed why they need two of them in the NRL.

Idea: Get a team of talented English 18 year olds, send them to Australia with a good Aussie coach, and play them in the Toyota Cup for two years. After that 2 years they can come back to England just as a new bunch of 18 year olds make the move.

No its not, only in a few cases are there fringe NRL players. Usually at poor clubs such as Harlequins and Bradford. The vast majority would still easily walk into NRL sides and often do once their SL careers are over.

Ha, righto mate. I'll let you think so.

I posted this on another thread a while back:

Going off the rosters from RLeague.com, the following ex Super League players played NRL in 2010:

Shane Tronc
Scott Logan
Adam Mogg
Ryan Tandy
Trent Barrett
Tim Smith
Greg Bird
Brad Meyers
Clinton Toopi
Jamie Lyon
Ian Henderson
Aaron Heremaia (former Division 1 player with Leigh)
Richie Fa'aoso
Ben Harris
Feleti Mateo
Shane Elford
Colin Best
Craig Stapleton
Garret Crossman
Jason Ryles
Jason Cayless
Daniel Fitzhenry
Liam Fulton
John Skandalis

That's not taking into account Todd Carney and Mick Crocker, who would both currently be in SL if their visas had been accepted. Of those players, the vast majority returned after being cut from their Super League squads, I think only Bird, Mateo and Lyon would be wanted at their old clubs.

Gus is a goose in commentry he always has been and he knows it, but his is a great coach and a statesmen in the affairs of rugby league. His idea is not a bad one and a suggestion in one of the threads to transfer players for year is good. When I served in the aussie army they had a thing called longlook. Where five or six sailors, soldiers and airman could do a transfer between england and aussie forces for 3 months. Maybe someting similar could come into play where each team NRL/SL pair up (i know there is 16 v 14 teams, but i'm sure that they could work around that) and do a swap for a season. Have a rule that players from both comps have played minimun 15 - max 100 games.
