:lol::lol:

They would have made Hughes play in the shield games if he was gunning for a test recall instead of sending him over to a useless one day series before the ashes. Obviously he isn't in their sights for the GABBA test

The only reason Clarke and Watson are there are to appease the Indians, plus Haddin has made it clear he wants back in the ODI side so bye bye Wade
What rot. Althought I disagree with the policy there is now a lengthy history of our selectors using ODIs as a sort of practice for Tests because our first class domestic season is so inadequate.

If he gets a lot of runs on Indian pitches they'll know he'll be set to cash in on Aussie flat decks and he'll be walking out to open the batting on the morning of the first test at the gabba.

I don't think Hads should be going on the tour, but I don't want the Victorian Kamran Akmal to represent us either.

I could have handled Paine.

I think Wade has probably fallen to third in line behind Haddin and Paine to be honest. A big year from Triffit or Nevill could see them leap ahead too.

What is it with the constant non-mentions of Hartley here? Easily the most accomplished keeper available including Haddin, and respectable as a bat. Or does every keeper need to be a Gilchrist/Haddin clone? fmd.

His batting is an issue. He's not that great a wicket keeper to make up the differences between him and Paine. Also Paine is 3 years younger.

If it was between him and Wade though, I'd go Hartley.

The fact is if we're going with the best genuine keeper/batsman it has to be Haddin. All round he is the best. If you're selecting for the future it should be Paine.

If we had a great spinner then keeping ability would be more important. But we are a pace focused international team right now with a short batting order. We need a keeper who can bat. Even if it means sacrificing some keeping skills.

Scissorhands dropped the easiest catch I've ever seen put down in the 4th ODI. It cost us the game and I reckon the reason he was dropped. He's a bigger genius than you and after reading your above post that's saying a lot.

Wade isn't good enough as a batsman or as a keeper. My point was mostly directed at a suggestion like Hartley.

We cannot have a mediocre batsman as a keeper. Every now and then when there is an opportunity for a great keeper to separate himself from a good keeper is not that common. Our batting order collapses are far more common. In the end scoring runs is the most important part of the game. We don't have enough good batsmen to carry a week #7.

First class stats:

Tim Paine: Matches:63 Inns:110 NO:13 Runs: 3067 HS:215 Av:31.61 BF: 6955 SR:44.09 100:1 50: 21 ct:175 st:9
C.Hartley: Matches:93 Inns:154 NO:20 Runs: 4176 HS:125 Av:31.16 BF: 9525 SR:43.84 100:7 50: 21 ct:410 st:12

a .5 run average difference. One of these players also don't have fingers made of glass.

That's why I'm saying age will come into play. I think Paine is an excellent gloveman as well as a decent batsman.

And if they want squad continuity then Paine's limited overs numbers get him past Hartley.

I'm not anti-Hartley and would be fine with him being selected, I can just see why they'd go for Paine.

Does anybody fail to notice that Matthew Wade is always in the reckoning for selection because of his photogenic presence for tv? Even though Wade drops catches & misses stumpings! The conspiracy Australian cricketers were getting picked on looks rather than talent began after Australia went from a team winning each and every game (with a bunch of ugly mugs) to a 50/50 team.

Its the same set of rules with picking Wade in the team as Mitchy J. When the likes of Merv, Boonie and Border were around: Cricket was the game with zero sex appeal (and no so much sponsorship endorsements) but ultimately winning games

Its the same superficiality that makes people want Nathan Lyon out, even though he is the best spin option, how he is on the outer at times when he should be a key player

If the team was picked on grit and talent, an ugly neandethal like Peter Handscomb (and yes, hes a Victorian) should get a game.
