The real reason Michael Hagan quit the Eels

Outgoing Eels coach Michael Hagan has revealed that a lack of respect for the game from the NRL's young brigade was at the heart of his shock decision to quit Parramatta today.
Hagan cited health and family reasons in a press conference today announcing his departure, but confirmed later that the increased prevalence of alcohol-fuelled incidents has turned him off coaching at NRL level.
"It's really disappointing that we've got some young players that aren't doing the right thing by the game, which has been evident at a lot of clubs, not just at Parramatta," Hagan told the
Nine Network.
When pressed further and asked if it was a lack of respect for the game in general, Hagan replied: "In some ways I think it is, and I think that's a real shame."
The premiership-winning coach went on to voice his displeasure at the recent grapple-tackle controversy, admitting that he is unhappy with the current state of the game.
"Personally, it's not something you have to want to coach every week, but unless you're prepared to coach the ruck and that part of the game, you can't win games," said Hagan.

couple of interesting points. in terms of the young palyers mucking up i'm not convinced it didnt happen in the old days - just the media didnt care whereas now it sells papers
in regards to the ruck, it's really up to the coaches to shape the direction the game goes. they're the ones employing grappling and one out play claiming it's the only way to win which is bullsh*t.
for league to open up and becoming attacking again like SL they need the coaches to start taking chances. i thought after the tigers won in 05 that it would change things but it hasnt. it was great to see canberra chuck the ball around over the back half of the season and the way manly played in the gf was the way it should be played
