Halves will be tested

AUSTRALIAN skipper Darren Lockyer says it could take until the late stages of the Tri-Nations tournament for his scrumbase combination with halfback Andrew Johns to reach its full potential, labelling their partnership "a work in progress".

On the surface, the dream pairing of the two best players in the game would appear to be a match made in heaven, but their combination is sure to be tested given their hasty preparation for tomorrow night's tournament opener against New Zealand at Telstra Stadium.

Johns and Lockyer only ran at half and five-eighth for the first time at training on Tuesday, with the Kiwi clash their first ever as a halves partnership.

"You can't just expect to put a couple of guys that haven't played before together and have it work the first game," Lockyer said.

"I think we'll both put the team (first) in our mind ... and I think after a couple of games we'll start to get things right.

"(Tuesday) was really the first day we really ran with the football together and we can't expect everything to be Mickey Mouse the first game.

"It's going to take a few games under our belt to get it exactly right, we may not see the best until the end of the tournament."

The last time Johns and Lockyer played in a game together was in a Test match against Great Britain in 2002, but that was in the days when Lockyer was a fullback.

Since then injury, namely Johns' run of knee, neck and back injuries, have kept the two from running onto the field on the same side.

"A lot of the guys have played before and we've played against each other so much we know how each other plays so it's not going to be an issue," added Johns. "The understanding's there and my job is to get my good kicking game in."

what does everyone think?
i reckon the tele is just trying to talk some sh*t up again...

Johns and Lockyer have both won titles at various levels dragging an average halves partner along with them.

Combined in the same side.....its just going to be incredible.

Johns has but Lockyer???
What's he won as a 5/8th? He helped win the tri nations last year but with an in form BK alongside him.
No disrespect to Locky but he's been a disaster at 5/8th this season.

I agree Lockyer hasn't been great this season. If he doesn't hit form by the end of next year he should either retire or go back to fullback.

No chance, the ESL clubs wouldn't let him  They'd throw millions at old Locky.

Lockyer and Johns will get in eachothers way, they both like to run the show primarily, I just hope Lockyer accepts Johns is miles better and takes a backseat.

I agree with the latter, but jeez, retire? That's one major over-reaction.

I hope so, Johns is clearly in better form than Lockyer. This will be one to watch out for tonight.

if i was an australian (god, perish the thought  ) i would be worried about this halves pairing. you have an old, burnt out injury prone halfback who is struggling for form and praying his teammates will make him look the part ,,again.

In lockyer you have a player whose confidence is at an all time low,, whose form is shocking andwhose main objective in the game is to be the kangaroo captain.

bet the gameplan is identical to the garbage the knights tried to serve up to us each week this season and lockyer will have very little input.

you want to see good halves tonight ?
watch the black 6 and 7 rip you to pieces.

so bk set up allthose 1st half tries in the tri-nations final last yr .?you sir are a goose

it was probably lockyers last real good game but it was the most dominant 40 min performance i have seen in an international game &to try &credit bk with that shows you have NFI about league ,but then again you are a union fan &a kiwi so that explains your low IQ

i think Locky will play well with Johns taking alot of the pressure off him

We will see! Locky carried the whole aussie team last year, i can see him producing some of the best footy we have ever seen!

Johns is getting old, but i supose he sits out most of the season for the last 4 years
