Hannay tries to save career

SHATTERED Sharks star Josh Hannay will have his future sorted out tomorrow when he meets with coach Ricky Stuart amid threats of legal action from his manager.

Hannay, who was dumped to the Gymea Gorillas last month, told The Daily Telegraph last night he had not spoken to Stuart or chief executive Greg Pierce in three weeks and would seek a release from the remaining 18 months of his contract if a return to first grade was ruled out.

While his manager Jim Banaghan launched a scathing attack on the Rugby League Players Association for failing to provide adequate support, a devastated Hannay insisted last night he did not deserve to be playing park football but would not be walking out on the club.

"I'd like it not to get to the point where legal action is taken – that would be the worst case scenario – but it would be good if we could all sit down and get the situation sorted out," he said. "No one wants to be somewhere they're not wanted.

"I don't see myself as a park footballer and the form I was showing with Cronulla didn't warrant me playing park football, either.

"I'll play footy for whoever I have to because I love the game but I'd like us to reach some sort of settlement so we can move on."

Hannay admits he is running out of options after joining the Sharks from North Queensland this season.

"I haven't heard anything – there has been no indication that anything is going to change," he said.

"I haven't spoken to anyone at Cronulla for three weeks but that's just the way it is these days. It's a business and its fairly cut-throat.

"Once they decide to do something there's not much else you can do so I'm just doing what's being asked of me."

But RLPA president Matthew Rodwell last night warned that Hannay might be forced to play local football again next season after Stuart said he would not be releasing the centre early.

"Ricky basically outlined that the club was well within its right to enforce the stipulations of Josh's contract and he is basically resigned to the fact that they'll be paying Josh for the next 18 months," Rodwell said.

"It's not looking good for Josh because I reviewed his contract yesterday and it is heavily weighted in the club's favour.

"It states that the player can be asked to play in any related competition, so I don't know what sort of recourse he has."

His comments have incensed Banaghan who claimed the RLPA had let Hannay down by not taking a stand against the Sharks.

"This was their chance to show what they're capable of and what have they done? They're acting more like mice than men," he said.

Banaghan also confirmed that he was on the verge of taking legal action against Cronulla for failing to honour their side of the agreement.

Hannay has played just three first grade games this season.

"It would appear that we have a case against Cronulla Rugby League Football Club in this case," Banaghan said. "We're working through the process now and I suspect there could be something served on Cronulla in the near future.

"Everyone has been jumping up and down about player behaviour the past few days but what about club behaviour?

Have the players got any rights?

"Apparently Josh isn't good enough to play reserve grade at the moment. You've got to pick players on merit and if you don't then you're on dangerous ground."

Pierce last night denied Hannay would be forced to stay with the club.

"Josh is a good young bloke and we'd like to sort it out," he said.

Hopefully this matter is sorted out, looks rather bad for us. As far as Hannay goes, if I was in his shoes I'd be playing park footy for a year to make sure I got paid.

Does Hannay forgot how he farged us around last year.
IMO he didn't want to come to the Sharks but had no other decent offer from another club, so he fished us for as much as he could.
Does he not remember the Cowboys had him playing QLD cup for most of last year.
He's pathetic and so is his manager.

I think it reflects very poorly on our club.

We should never have signed him after the attitude he showed, but the way he has been treated would have to make others think twice about joining the club.

Very unprofessional of us imo.

There's obviously more to this than meets the eye. We'd be paying him if we released him and we are going to pay him to be a Gorilla so it seems somewhat punitive and unreasonable to hold him back.

This is not really about his ability, worth, talent or if he held the club up for a couple of days in negotiations. Doesn't make sense for it to be about any of that. I agree with PJ. This casts a dark shadow over the club.

While his manager Jim Banaghan launched a scathing attack on the Rugby League Players Association for failing to provide adequate support
maybe Jim would not be so upset at the lack of support from the Association to disregard/overturn a binding document, the very document he sourced and interpreted for his client prior to signing it

bit silly really jim jim

Obviously Ricky has some agenda with him otherwise he would be using him as a back up player. I really didn't think he was too bad in the first couple of games this season. I cannot see any justification in not allowing him to try and further his career elsewhere. My guess is his contract will be mutually terminated thus no payout from the Sharks. Win to Ricky, frees up some salary cap and gets rid of a player he doesn't want. Can't say I'm impressed with the method though.

I hate seeing this. Hannay was probably our in form centre when he got dropped...he was showing some creativity, he was solid in defence and he did nothing wrong to warrant Premier League selection, nor park football. He's been f**ked around by the club and he didn't deserve it. From all reports, his Premier League form was excellent too.

Like PJ said, players are going to remember this when they consider signing a contract with us...older players won't sign with us in case they stop becoming a part of our plans in a few years time.

It's bad for business and bad for football. They're trying to piss him off so he voluntarily leaves his contract so the club doesn't ahve to pay him out...it's a low, arsehole of a thing to do.

Speaking of which, does anybody know what Seymour is up to now? Is he playing park football, or just disappeared off the face of the Earth?

i dont feel he was doing anything ceativitry wise when in FG - but yes he defends well

and there could well be sleeping dogs behind the whole ordeal

if he is not wanted in grade - its pretty simple, both parties need to come to agreement so he can go

then again, having a green eye and a white eye - im sitting pretty really

............cheer cheer the green and cheer cheer............

Not me guys, Employers have a right.
As the sharks are paying him he either gets on and tries to force his way back in or backs his ability and sever ties with the club to get another contract elsewhere.
Every one is saying that he is up to it so he should have a contract quick especially with centres in demand.

I feel he has been hard done by - he has no way of playing himself back into first grade (with due respect to Gymea) - he knows he should be looking elsewhere for a contract but Ricky is just cruelling him, how does he get a contract (ie in England) when he is playing park footy. And we may yet need him closer to the finals. Don't like it Ricky

He wasn't signed by Ricky, and he is obviously not in Rickys plans for he future... Maybe he should just move on, if he wants to leave the club, request a release. I cant really see anyone else signing him now, but thats not the sharks fault, no one wanted him before he came here anyway.
