interesting decission in ball for this weekend Bryce cartwright to 5/8.He definatly has the skill set to play this position at this level but doubt the speed of the mark is there to play at a older level.Still good to see the coaches try things

Not a great night tonight. Matts went down by 6 after dominating field position and general play, way too many spilt ball, forced passes and penalties. Ball lead at half time and looked good only to be completely dominated in second half again due to constant turnovers to be smashed 44-18. SG Ball defense was atrocious in second half. Both teams have their work seriously cut out to make any impact in their competitions

Who were the standouts (if any) for Penrith in both games?

How did the positional changes in SG Ball work out?

Matts-lodge worked overtime although several pushed passes resulted in plenty of turnovers zelezniak and Freeman were good.
Ball-Cartwright to 5/8 seemed to work ok. He did butcher one try dropping the ball while trying putting the ball down with noone around him but was otherwise solid. Satini caused problems but didn't see enough of the ball. Jakiel didn't play

Jakiel injured?

I notice George Jennings wasnt in the 17 either. His hamstring was heavily strapped against Parra and seemed to be limping a fair bit.

Very true what you say about Penrith dominating field position and general play, however that was only the case because the Doggies were dropping a hell of a lot of ball which gave Penrith this opportunity! Like Penrith, Canterbury also gave a away a few penalties so that side of the equation was equal.

For mine the difference was Canterbury's great defence. On top of that they were able to convert a few of the opportunities that were given to them. I personally counted six occasions where either Langi or Cox from the Bulldogs rushed up quickly in defence and knocked ball out of the attacking player's hands with superb hits!

Ultimately the Doggies were also disallowed two tries in the game. The first to the winger Godfred ????? (the African kid), and secondly that new centre Michael Morgan (who you might recall I referred to in an earlier post as the kid who put on four tries against Penrith in the trial game in Janaury). According to reports after the game both tries were legitimate, nevertheless it was the referees decision that counted in the end!

Hats off to that Nayah Freeman though. I think we'll be seeing a lot of that kid in the future. He's definately looks to be a star for the future!

having seen the matts and ball last two games, missed the manly game, i would say they will both make the eight looking at the draw ahead. The matts performance agaist the dogs was a huge improvement on the week before and they may have paniced a little when they could have closed it out, lodges two pushed passes probably cost them in the bulldogs 10 metre area. The ball was the better team for the first 50 mins, leading 18-10 with 20 mins to go, then dropped ball after dropped ball and missed tackles and penalties, they hardly touched the ball in the last 20 mins. Santini has been disappointing, his one on one defence in both games has been terrible, against parra it cost two tries directly from his misses and the bulldogs center strolled past him on 4 occasions setting up two tries, the capataincy never sits well with such a laid back quiet individual, best find a captain who will talk and motivate and let santini concentrate on his game. Jackiel did play off the bench.

i watched matts in the trials and they seemed the goods, they should have went on with it in both manly and doggies games. against parra there kicking game was a let down and they didnt have much in attack.
Lee addison is a good coach and he might b able to get them out of this rutt and hopefully scrape into the the top eight.
this kid from young looks the good, tia-killifi also playing some good footy

I think they still look ok but crucial errors at crucial times have proven costly. I wouldnt quite call it a rut but it defnitely isnt the start they wanted. They have improved each week.

Both SG Ball and Harold Matts can comfortably make the top 8, they have both had a tough start to the season with the draw, they should be judged at the end of the year. Both teams are certainly not a shambles or a disgrace to their club and, if they make the 8 will not be easy beats. Not a great start, but not panic stations yet. I just think we have yet to see the best of each team

I'm not sure that matts can "comfortably" make the top 8. They were great yesterday but looking at the draw and what is needed to make the 8 they will need to win every game coming in to finish on 12 points and probably finish 7th or 8th. The danger game without doubt is souths who are currently unbeaten. A loss there could easily see them miss the finals altogether. The problem with the comp is obviously that you don't play everyone hence an average team like Canberra who don't play parra, penrith, dogs, Illawarra, souths, wests or manly but play wsas, swsas, norths, c coast, roosters, balmain, cronulla, St george and a bye get an easy passage at the expense of say penrith who play all the top teams. Hopefully the boys are up for Souths in 2 wks time it is looming as their GF.

10 points is always enough for teams to get into the top 8 in junior reps. 12 points means certain and creeping towards top 4, 10 tends to do it. Even if Penrith lost to Souths, I would still be confident of making the 8 with a bye to come in the last round

Definitely not true Canberra finished in 9th last year, obviously missing the finals with 11 points. In ball Roosters were in the 8th and final position on 12 points. 10 points would have missed the finals in both ball and matts.

I stand corrected on last year, just double checked. You are right. Sorry for that

I think in most years 10 is ok. I suppose it depends on who takes points off each other above you etc etc
Souths is definitely a big game for the Matts!
