Australian cricket has never really had strong off spinners. Tim May was ok, but the rest that have come through have barely made any inroads.

Offspin doesn't threaten most batsman. The only two which really do in world cricket are Murali and Singh, and Singh is only really effective on the sub continent.

You may be right but lets be realistic who are good leg-spinners in Austrlia behind MacGill and Warne. White? Bugger no! Therefore we may have to rely on off-spinners!

Funky Miller was ok.

Do you mean as a bowler or as a character? As a character yes, as a bowler he was average, got most of his wickets on spin pitches!

Best thing about Cullen was his confidence - he kept flighting the ball a lot even after being smacked around a bit.

Needs to work on his line a bit, because on occasions he was pushing it too far wide and even though he turns it a good amount it didnt matter because he was pitching them in line with the "wide" guideline.

But still, I was impressed with him a lot more than I expected to be today.

So was I, the prodigious turn he got was incredibly uncommon from an Australian finger spinner. The only other Aussie finger spinner who moves it that much is Krezja, and he's a fair way off. Doherty, Hauritz, O'Brien and co. really don't rip it all that much.

I think he was turning it more than some of the next generation wristies, such as White and Casson.

By the end of the year Haurie will be ripping it! He is just warming up!:)

Hauritz has had 4 seasons to warm up now. Still no signs of spin.

I think, at the moment with MacGill in the side he's not needed, as O'Brien is serving as back up spinner.

I imagine he'll get a decent run when the summer gets going.

Don't take this the wrong way, but honestly O'Brien looks pretty ordinary to me! Isn't Kretza better with the ball than O'Brien! Really you shouldn't need batting either way!

O'Brien started as a specialist spinner, progressed to an all-rounder, and is on the verge of being a specialist batsman now.

I think Krezja's the only other real spinner in the squad now.

O'Brien batted well against the Queenslanders the other day... Lord knows he batted better than McGrath would've today as well.

I'm starting to understand the supersub system....I wasn't keen on it before, and I'm still not huge on it, but I am starting to get it at least....

With all players availiable you either play O'Brien OR Thornelly, as both of them are mainly batsman who can have a trundle if needed. Kretza is a spinner and needs to be there!

It is not how many wickets he got. Yeah he got one, but he beat the bat more than half a dozen times. On that pitch where it was not spinning he has done well and it is a good start to the season!
Hauritz can't spin the damn thing even on sub continent pitches, he's not an off spinner, he's a right arm slow medium pacer.
The guy is hopeless, btw he was born in the same year as Luke Covell.

Too bad Kretza isn't being used with MacGill back. NSW also have 2 other spinning all rounders. Stephen O'Keefe and Jarrad Burke.

he looked OK and seems to suit the ODI game, as he can tie a batsman down and force him into a false shot

the test will be seeing what he can do in the longer version; can he penetrate when the batsmen are on the defensive, they didn't really seem to have a problem keeping him out

Hauritz isn't even in the Pura cup squad so he won't be able to prove anything right now.
