After making his NRL and Test debuts in a matter of weeks, Vodafone Warriors hooker Siliva Havili has today landed another reward in the shape of a new two-year contract with the club.

Off contract at the end of this season, the 21-year-old Manurewa Marlins product joins an impressive list of players re-signed for next year and beyond.

Only four weeks ago the Vodafone Warriors announced captain Simon Mannering, Jacob Lillyman and Sione Lousi were among 12 players re-signed for terms ranging from one to four years.

Havili’s deal also comes just three days after the club announced it had snared Melbourne Storm star Ryan Hoffman, one of the biggest signings in the Vodafone Warriors’ history, on a three-year contract.

“It’s been a buzzing month for me with everything that has been happening,” said Havili, who is managed by Peter Brown.

“I’m thankful for the club re-signing me. Now it’s all about hard work and letting the footy talk.”

Re-signing Havili was especially satisfying for Vodafone Warriors general manager football operations Dean Bell.

“Siliva was actually the first player I signed in my role as recruitment manager,” he said.

“I saw him playing at Mountfort Park in Manurewa. You could tell back then that he had special ability, one of those players you knew would have the talent to go a long way provided he was prepared to work at it.

“I’ve followed his development closely through the NYC and the New South Wales Cup into the NRL a few weeks ago and then making his debut for the Kiwis last week. He was impressive in the Test and looked really comfortable.”

Havili, who played for Tonga at the 2013 Rugby League World Cup, is determined to repay the faith shown in him.

“I was shocked when Dean told me I was his first signing back then and I know he’s excited now for me to be able to continue my career here,” he said.

After making 57 NYC appearances, Havili was signed on a one-year fulltime NRL contract this season.

He started out with the club’s New South Wales Cup side before Andrew McFadden marked his debut as Vodafone Warriors acting head coach by giving Havili his first NRL outing against Canterbury-Bankstown at Eden Park on April 13. He came off the bench in that game and in the next two matches against St George Illawarra and Melbourne en route to his dramatic Kiwi call-up.

Joining team-mates Mannering, Shaun Johnson and fellow debutant Ben Henry in the Kiwi camp was an unforgettable experience.

“When the team was announced I knew there were a lot of critics out there about me being selected,” he said.

“But the feeling inside the camp, the bond we had and the brotherhood made us really tight.”

Havili is yet another St Paul’s College product. He captained the school’s First XIII and also played First XV rugby union although league was always his preference. After coming up through the Manurewa Marlins at junior club level he later played for the Otara Scorpions.

His younger brother Semisi, who captained the St Paul’s First XIII last year, was set to follow Siliva at the Vodafone Warriors but has opted to pursue university studies first.

I wonder where negotiations were at prior to and post the test.

Getting picked for NZ ups your NRL Value. One test is all you need to boost your cap estimated value at NRL HQ.

With Friend grooming Young Havili all of sudden our tide has turned somewhat for season 2014

People are talking about 2015 - 2016 being our year, man we can do it in 2014 stop being so negative lol

Great extension we are on the up and up (touch wood)

cough* you left out 'Major'

" Major announcement Jerome Ropati secured after alarming reports of scouts showing interest from Lap Land "

All jokes aside ( this will hurt ) the sooner he and Nielson are fit the stronger our depth is for inJury cover.

You have to wonder how long this show will be allowed to go on with Ropati. He's 29 now, and has been through a horror run with injury.

Looking forward to the retirement party so we can all get chocked up on memories of the pass to Manu ( Team eight beats one ) the high five of some random in the crowd as the Warriors thump the Broncs Fifty something.

" Jerome was a great club man....good influence over the younguns....." and all that sorta tosh.

I love Friendy, but I can't help but think it might be a year too far and also halting the progress of Havili.

I still can't understand the Friend starting, Locke off the bench set-up. Yes Locke was okay last week but he was in a completely dominant side. Do we really think Havili is going to be a much better player for a full year in NSW Cup, when to me it seems like our best XVII has him playing 15-20 mins in the right situation - even if we lose Locke's utility value.

And he'll continue to be as a Warriors staff member, which I'm certain he'll become. Jerome is a tremendous human being. He's just not a tremendously durable league player.

I feel like Jerome has a lot to offer in terms of a club mentor, almost more than someone like Ruben has been able to impart given he's probably too matey with the players.

You're not wrong.
He's done the degree and wot not , he turned Clinton Toopi around when Clinton went of the rails , he has a track record and the credentials to be a big asset.

Think this paves the way for Luke to come here once his current deal expires
Not a bad signing for us, however I'd like to see Havilii given the reigns soon, let the lad run with it.

It seems like management are keen to keep senior players around and let the young guns slowly make the transition into first grade. Hoffman over various back rowers, still wanting a centre instead of promoting Laumape full time, Friend for Havilli, Leuluai for Townsend etc.

Good moves IMO.

Sure is.
You want Juniors aiming up , playing their way past someone.
If you're using Juniors as injury cover alone, or when there was an oversight in planning ( no succession ) you're going to go around in circles forever with incomplete players.

A young player, if they see that making first grade is just an exercise in biding your time , the culture of the club is failing.

Kids slotting into to FG having inherited positions are going to have an un balanced appreciation of what it means.....they get a sense of entitlement and are more inclined to believe their own hype.

You want these next generation players to learn the humility of the mantle being passed to them by someone they respect....not by an act of the coaches pen to fill seventeen numbers on a team sheet.
