The highs and lows of Jarryd Hayne's World
For the best of times, With the scores at 18-all, the ball was hurled to the former 49er from seemingly as many yards out, only for him to drop it onto his superbly swinging boot and
hit the winning field-goal for a famous 19-18 victory. Then Hayne turned to his teammates, made the colourful gesture with his hands, and roared, as the cameras rolled,
"This is my house!"
The worst of times? The age of foolishness?
You've been playing with a team for six weeks, you've just lost to the Broncos a few hours before, and there is not a single other bond you've made in that time that suggests your place on such a night is with them? Who knows where the rest of the Titans are, you'd rather party with
da boys, 'cos it's all such a blast?
Or, you
do know who this person is, what their record is, what they are accused of, and you STILL want to party hard with them? Where was Jesus, Jarryd? You, who are so quick to point to the Lord on your shoulder at all times, we couldn't see him there that night? Is this really who He wants you to hang with?
And finally, this. The unexamined aspect is that j
ust a few hours after being knocked out of the finals, Hayne looks to be having the time of his life. He clearly has bugger all sense of loss, of grief, of despair, of giving a toss that his team had just missed out on what could have been a glorious campaign. The fans are in a black fug,
the coaching staff are gutted, as are the Titans executive and clearly, most of the Titans themselves after the match.
But Hayne? Party, party party! Just another work-day for an athlete for hire. Have dream, will travel. Can make up dreams on demand!
I hope his move to the Titans works, I really do.
But despite his worldliness in sport, he clearly still has a lot of growing up to do – or the worst of times are going to come visiting a lot more often.
