Jarryd Hayne may be right. Loose lips probably do sink ships. But so do inflated egos, underperforming footballers and million-dollar athletes who fail to produce displays to warrant their pay cheques.

Hayne arrived on the Gold Coast as the saviour but at the moment, it looks like the Titans need saving. Once again, he has become the story, his predilection for social media hijacking the narrative after a disappointing weekend for both the Titans and their biggest star.
The relationship between the pair appears to be fractured, not helped by rumours they exchanged words in the dressing room after the loss to the Roosters on Saturday night. When the coach and star player are at loggerheads, it rarely ends well.

Even if the rumours are incorrect, it doesn’t bode well for the year ahead. Hayne is yet to commit to the club beyond this season and it’s hard to see him staying given the air of negativity that currently surrounds him and the club.
The Titans fullback could mitigate some of his performance by pointing to a knee problem that affected his pre-season. That said, once Hayne took the field he ran out of excuses. His first half in particular was frustrating, NRL Stats suggesting he ran only four times for 21 metres. The second half was better but the enduring image is of Hayne, with the game in the balance, stationed on the wing and kicking for himself.

The ball ran over the sideline and Hayne, having been knocked to the ground, turned towards the linesman and raised his hands with an incredulous look on his face. No doubt his teammates felt the same, although their disbelief was most likely directed at the highest-profile and highest-paid teammate.

Hayne’s arrival on the Gold Coast was meant to be the catalyst for the club taking the next step. Instead, it has seemingly brought nothing but pain. Hayne has become a distraction, potentially a divisive one. The ship is sinking and it has nothing to do with loose lips.

The Titans have got everything they deserved.

If they think that the best way to buy elite level players is to fly them up, a player mind you that had no intention of signing with them but decided to go and have a look anyway, and then convince that player with enough money to sign on the day, then they're the ones that need to live with that decision. Perhaps if they'd done better due diligence they might not have signed him at all.

100%. They bundle him in a hotel room and put an offer on the table with a very short fuse/expiry date. An hour later he's WTF just happened.

Like that stupid TV show Married at First Sight, it was a forced union which will only end up in tears.

You reap what you sew.

I wonder if Hayne had been coerced somehow into signing for the Titans by the NRL. It smelt from the beginning and I didn't buy the "Eels offered nothing" or "the board was a mess" excuse.

I think he was more likely coerced by three factors other than an NRL-led conspiracy:

a) coerced by the failure of his original plan to land a domestic union contract after his Fiji 7s experiment, when the Waratahs said "no thanks"
b) coerced by his personal circumstances of impending fatherhood with no income to support the child/mother
c) coerced by his manager to sign the biggest (only?) deal on offer, which also provided the biggest commission

Hayne's not the sharpest tool in the shed, and he was likely upset his star power/brand didn't make the Waratahs and then us simply bow down and offer him the kingdom. You reap what you sow Jarryd...

Na I reckon there were a few offers but I definitely think Tits were only ones willing/able to offer a large enough contract for him.

A multi million dollar contract with little to no effort required?

Hasn't stopped him whinging though!

But it has meant the annihilation of his previously successful brand and reputation - along with any hope of a post-playing media career.
