Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne voted the NRL's most overrated player

By Martin Smith

May 17, 2010 He was voted the International Player of the Year in 2009 but foxsports.com.au users say Parramatta fullback Jarryd Hayne is the most overrated player in the NRL.
In our week-long poll that attracted over 1500 responses, Hayne attracted almost a quarter of the votes to finish ahead of St George Illawarra five-eighth Jamie Soward with 19 per cent of the votes.

“He puts bums on seats and I reckon he's sold more pairs of yellow boots for Nike than anyone. ” – Gorden Tallis In no doubt of Jarryd Hayne's value
Parramatta prop Justin Poore, who 'won' the most overrated tag in Rugby League Week's recent player poll, attracted 203 votes while perennial whipping boys Trent Barrett (243 votes) and Willie Mason (200 votes) also received plenty of attention.

Fox Sports rugby league commentator Gorden Tallis said he was surprised by the result, adding he would always pick Hayne in his side, overrated or not.

"I'd love to have an overrated player like him in my team," Tallis told foxsports.com.au.

"I don't think he is (overrated). He puts bums on seats, he's fantastic to watch and I reckon he's sold more pairs of yellow boots for Nike than anyone else. Go and ask the companies that are associated with him if he's overrated."

Tallis said the tag of overrated can often be misleading.

"I think it's an unfair question ... because you will always pick the guy with the highest profile," he said.

"The players in the past who have 'won' these sort of polls, like Brad Fittler. I mean, come on.

"Players don't rate themselves. They get rated by their fans and the media. So maybe the media, maybe me as a commentator, maybe I'm the one who overrates him.

"But as I said, I'd love to have Hayne in my side."

Tallis said he was unsure how the label would sit with Hayne and added that how players react to such criticism can vary.

"I suppose it can be a bit of motivation, but you'd have to ask the individual. I'm sure that his teammates would probably let him know in a friendly sort of way.

"Does it spur him on to train harder? He's a pretty good athlete, but that might be the little one per cent extra that he needs."

I keep hearing coaches and people who possess a far greater RL knowledge that I will ever have state time and time again that Hayne's run of form for the last dozen or so games last year was phenomenal and incomparable to any effort whether it be Dally Messenger or any modern day player.

More tall poppy stuff by stupid Australian sports fans. Over-rated ? FFS.

When you think about his run of form last year, he was doing something freakish every game for about ten weeks straight.

I think he has been very good this year and very consistant, if not as spectacular as last year.

It was funny to hear the commentators mention his try against the bulldogs had broken a try scoring drought for him....yet what wasnt mentioned was the number of try assists he has had this year.

i agree he isnt making the tries he was last year but if you look at his stats in running metres he is leading the comp also coming 2nd in return metres on kicks and hit ups

It's amazing how fickle the NRL fan base is.

Last season he put on a burst of form never seen by any player before, and now because hes just been solid on the back of limited room to work in, hes all of a sudden the most overrated player.

makes me laugh. while he isn't yet at the same level he was at in the last 2/3 of 2009 he is playing better than most of the nrl.

most of the people that claim he is over-rated would be the same people that claim we would be nothing without him.

I love it ...

The more of this talk to better ... Hayne is a baby still he will get better with age ... if he was of contract and there was no cap i wonder how many clubs would chase him ... watch him on origin this year, again will have a great series ...

Obviously voted by morons who dont know footy.
  1. Hayne is out of form like the rest of Parra.
  2. The selectors always put him on the wing. He never gets the ball. He is a roaming Fullback, not a Winger.

He's not out of form in the slightest considering his exceptional 2nd receiver passing this year and not to mention the dirty work he's doing carting the ball up.

Just because his not scoring tries or winning games single handedly doesn't mean he is playing bad. IMO his playing brilliant and super solid. Load of crap this poll is.
