NSW fullback Jarryd Hayne has re-ignited his feud with arch rival Billy Slater, declaring the Queensland fullback had "small man syndrome".

Discussing their recent altercations at club and Origin level, Hayne said: "He's got that small man syndrome so he just takes on pretty much anyone.

"It's mutual though; when we play each other we're both competitive people, we try to do the best for our teams and I think Billy's the sort of player that we can go at each other and have good friendly banter."

Hayne suggested on BigPond Sports Weekend that any resentment was reserved for when they play on opposing sides, however, commending Slater for his help and professionalism in the context of the Kangaroos at Test level.

"We're both professionals, so when we play in the same team we understand we're teammates. And when you have a teammate you share a bond, so we play great.

"Billy was great in the Tri-Nations. In the final he was encouraging me to come in and work with him. He was saying, 'come in, come in' to get me in there.

"When we play with each other there's no ill thought or anything like that."

But on his rival for the coveted title of best fullback in the rugby league world, Hayne declared: "Whenever we're against each other we're at each other's throats, but it's friendly."

Its funny because it is true.

Well said Jarryd.

Hayne hates Slater just like everyone else.

True or not, it's massively immature and unprofessional of Hayne to say this in print. Rivalries like this should stay on the field.

The eels just can't help themselves. Why can't we stay out of the paper for a while? All we are good at is giving quotes to journos to sell newspapers and losing games.

Hayne is a deadset wanker of the highest order.

Slater leaves him for dead in terms of ability IMO

You miss the point.... nobody is saying he can't play, just that he is a grub with some of the things he does on the field and is a protected species when he does it.

Slater is the biggest wanker in the game today, when Manboobs Idris landed on him last night i was hoping he would choke him to death.

Both wankers IMO. As bad as each other.

Hayne has enormous talent but IMO is a major tool. Sorry.

But he is our tool.

On Haynes playing ability, I fear that he will never quite become the complete player he should considering all the untold talent he possesses, because in part we seem to not have the skill in attracting a great half or hooker to our club or identifying and keeping the ones we do produce.

Hayne in my opinion is the number one talent in the game today, but because of a combination of ego, a lack of other creative personnel for him to work with and laziness in developing his positional play, which probably goes back to his ego, he will stifle that talent from going to the levels of all time great that he is capable of doing under the right circumstances.

I hope they never get sent to the sin-bin together, as someone will get hurt trying to fit both of those heads in, walking up the tunnel.

The entirety of what Hayne said in that article was focused simply on that Slater is a great player and that they enjoy playing with each other as much as they do getting in each others faces.

As for the 'little man' line itself, it looks like Hayne is trying to compliment the fact that Slater isn't afraid to tackle or run at anyone, regardless of their size but since he is the brightest light bulb he has done it in a terrible, backhanded manner.

But thank you Telegraph for glossing over all the positive things Hayne said. I hate reading about good news in rugby league. Honest

I ve never seen a player object more to being tackled then slater, anytime this turd is roughed up a little he goes nuts, Slater is a tool though unfortunatley he has a mate in Hayne as well.

100% disagree on that front.

Hayne's highest level is WAY above Slater's. No doubt at all that Hayne is a better talent by far and has produced better top line performances than Slater has (and has the ability to carry a team by himself - which Slater has not yet shown).

But having said that, Slater probably works on his game a little harder and that makes him a very good player.

TBH I think Slater is the most over-rated player in the whole comp right now - everyone talks about him as if he's the best fullback ever, but an impartial observer who knew nothing of his history would probably question whether he's even in the top 3 fullbacks in the comp THIS SEASON.

Disagree.

The game needs rivalries like this. It's great. It'll add even more spice to the clash next time they play each other.

The only thing that I will say about Slater is that he is more consistent than Hayne. He goes hard in every game where as Hayne slacks off.

However, if you put Slater in a team w/o Smith, Cronk, Thurston, Lockyer, then like you said, he would not be able to carry the team.

He plays for Melbourne, Qld, Australia - usually with the same bunch of playmakers.

He'll have a tough time playing with Robbo, MK and Mortz.

Haha, nothing story...I'd love for Hayne to come out an call Billy all sorts of names, but he hasn't said anything insulting here.
