South Sydney Rabbitohs relocate from Redfern Oval to Heffron Park Maroubra

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will relocate its training and administration facilities from its historic home at Redfern Oval to Maroubra's Heffron Park.

With Randwick City Council, the NRL club will build a High Performance Community Centre at Heffron Park.

The council has received a $16 million grant from the Federal Government for the development of the 5000 sqm facility to include a gymnasium, indoor sports arena, a high altitude chamber, rehabilitation pool and a community centre.

The centre will also provide a new home for Souths Cares – the community service organisation which is heavily involved with sporting clubs and schools in the Maroubra area.

Randwick mayor Tony Bowen said the grant announcement, made today by Federal Minister for Sport, Senator the Hon. Don Farrell, is great news for sports fans, local teams and the community as a whole.

The NRL club's use of Heffron Park will not restrict future uses by site leaseholder, Marcellin College, Randwick or local sporting clubs.

This construction of the centre is expected to take about two years.

Souths CEO Shane Richardson said the club holds a lease at Redfern Oval until 2019 and will continue to use the ground for junior games and Return to Redfern matches.

“We approached City of Sydney council but they didn’t want to do any extensions at Redfern Oval. We have outgrown that site,” Mr Richardson said.

“We are extremely pleased Randwick Council and the Federal Government have stepped in, Maroubra is at the heart of everything we do.”

Maroubra MP Michael Daley said: "It doesn't get any better, the Rabbitohs are moving to a South Sydney-mad area, they are coming to God's country."

Matraville Tigers currently use Heffron Park, unsure how this will affect them.

They use the Matraville side, they don't play at all where this will be AFAIK. When I used to play for the Wombats we used the Marcellin fields as home ground though

If the Coogee Wombats are alowed to train at the new centre it would be bad news for the other junior clubs around Matraville Tigers , Maroubra Lions, Botany Rams,South Sydney Mustangs,La Perouse Panthers and South Eastern will all die because the Wombats who all ready rape the area and the clubs for there players and have become the biggest junior club in the souths district will just get every one. Who will take there kids to the other clubs when you can train at the souths centre with the wombats they need to go then to give the other clubs an even playing field
