Neil Henry named new Cowboys coach

North Queensland have confirmed they have signed Canberra Raiders coach Neil Henry on a five year deal from 2009.
The Cowboys have also announced that they have secured Bulldogs centre Willie Tonga on a four year deal.
Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said Henry's previous experience at North Queensland would be invaluable when he officially takes over the reins.
Henry served as current coach Graham Murray's assistant at the Cowboys from 2002-06 before linking with the Raiders last season.
"The club has conducted a comprehensive and thorough process in finalising his appointment," Parr told reporters in Townsville.
"Neil is a high quality coach who understands our club and the north Queensland community.
"He has served his apprenticeship.
"We have no doubt he is the best person for the position and he has the necessary attributes to take this club forward."
The North Queensland hierarchy told Murray before the 2008 NRL season that his contract would not be renewed next year.
Speculation has since been rife over who would fill Murray's shoes.
Rumours have also surfaced that Murray may not see out the season after North Queensland slumped to a 0-3 win-loss season start.
But Parr today confirmed Murray would finish the season as coach.
"We are quite happy that this decision ends the speculation," Parr said.
Henry was tipped to take over after he exercised a get-out clause to gain an early release from the final year of his Raiders contract earlier this week.
Meanwhile, North Queensland rubber stamped Tonga's arrival next year.
Tonga, 24, said yesterday that the prospect of playing alongside Cowboys skipper Johnathan Thurston and North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen had lured him north.
He has joined the Cowboys on a deal reportedly worth a massive $1.4 million.
Thurston and Tonga were teammates at the Bulldogs in 2004 when the club won their last premiership.
In the same year Tonga made his debut for Queensland and Australia and scored 18 tries in 27 appearances for the Bulldogs.
A knee injury wrecked the latter stages of his 2005 season - the year he played the last of his seven Tests for Australia.
The explosive centre believes playing alongside Thurston and being coached by Henry will help him break back into the representative arena after a three-year absence.
Tonga is in his fifth year at the Bulldogs.

I just cant understand what the club thinks it will gain by keeping him on the coaching staff ...

... henry is obvioulsy going to have one eye on the club he is "passionate" about
... what consequences does he face if the club performs poorly
... why give him a chance to whisper in a players ear
... it makes more sense to start the new coach now (or are they unsure about his abilities)

FFS management do somehting positve for a change that will receive general acceptance from supporters, the same people that stick by this club year after year diespite the sh*te they have been dished up players, coaches and management.

It was interesting that they took the decision to our leadership group to determine whether or not to give him the arse. Hopefully they continue to consult them over it, but if Henry does have to stay around (which I prefer he didn't) then hopefully Furner takes the reigns sooner rather than later.

I don't think DOG will finish the season as head coach. He'll just be doing a handover to Furner.

Much like the Meninga / Elliott handover.

Interesting to hear Henry on 2KY BSB this morning indicating that he discovered a termination clause in his contract (after telling the players that he would stick by his contract) that indicated he could terminate his contract for any reason by giving two months notice .. he sought legal advice which confirmed his understading of the clause ... what a f**king strange clause for management to have agreed to ... I hope it also applied in favour of the Raiders .... and if that is the case we give him him two months wages and tell him to piss off.

I might add to the previous reasons I posted for telling him his services are no longer required ..

... he is the assistant SOO coach and therefore will not have his mind fully on the Raiders for at least 3 rounds

I'm hoping Dog let's Furner be head coach in a few rounds to let a smooth transition take place. It's the least he can do.

That's good to hear dolph ...

... best of luck to the cowboys for having signed a coach for a 5 year term that hasnt really proven much at all at FG level ... maybe he'll be a success ... I had my doubts based purely on some poor performances by the Raiders last season, especially on trips away ... didnt make sense to me that a top notch coach could only nab one game away from home (against penrith from memory ... pfft).

maybe the Cowboys will shaft him with a 'forgotten' contract clause.

anyway I still want my $50 back

Was may be more appropriate Bay

My sources at the QRL are none too happy with Henry's actions

Meninga and Walters tipped to be the new pairing

that'd be f**king hilarious
no doubts meninga is still a raiders boy through and through, so it wouldnt surprise me if he is as dirty on this as we are

Neither... Kerrod ;-)
