I think it is understandable that refs make mistakes, they are human, the game is fast and they get 0 assistance from the touchies who contribute absolutely nothing to the game except for the occasional wrong decision. But for video refs there is absolutely no excuse. Maybe the problem is that the laws aren't clear enough because there is obviously far too much room for interpretation.
As a Raiders fan I wasn't that surprises by the Michaels decision, I thought that there was a clear picture that showed him with his hand on the ball and the ball on the ground, there might no have been a great deal of downward pressure but there doesn't need to be. However, I am annoyed that similar incidents, e.g. the Tongue no try against the Knights were no different but the decision went the other way.
We've had the video ref for long enough for there to be ample footage for the refs to get together and decide what is a try and what isn't, make it clear to everyone from the start of the season how it will be intrepeted and stick to it. If it is impossible for the video ref to make a decision it should be sent back to the ref and the touchies to make a decision based on what they saw. Taking the Carnie no try from the weekend it was not clear from the footage that he had intentionally played at the ball, if this had gone back to refs call it would have been given as a try.
The video ref makes field refs lazy about making decisions. It seems like basically every try gets looked at which slows down the game and introduces far too mcuh opportunity for idiots like Harrigan to exert their personal prejudice on games.
